Well, I had my leaving party with the kids yesterday. Tears were shed (not just mine) and it was very sad. Trying to explain that I had to go back to work was a little difficult as they figured that I should just stay with them as they didn´t want me to go home. I got a lot of messages written in my book and they´re all really touching - in fact, every time I read them it makes me want to cry again! I´ve promised to visit next year - so I guess I´ll need to start saving now. There´s plenty more pics but I need to pack. I´m on the overnight bus to Ouro Preto so looking forward to that.... read more

hey guys.. sorry for the lack of updates. so to sum up my experience of rio... in my opinion, it the BEST city. there is so much to do, in the day or night, that i do not see how the locals can get any work done. I stayed in rio for about 8 days. The weather was great 4 days and the other 4 days it was cloudy and rainy. On the plane ride to brazil, I sat next to a girl who gradutated from UCSB and spending one month volunteering in favellas. The company ripped her off. (she spent $1600US for board and volunteering while only $400 went towards the favella). during one of the bad weather days, I met up with her and spent a day volunteering the favella. It was such an ... read more

Cariocas Arrived in Rio after a rather long flight, i think it was 14 hours including the stop off in Sao Paulo, which luckily we didnt have to leave the plane for. We also had the good fortune to be upgraded on the flight to ´world traveller plus´ which afforded us an extra 7 inches of leg room, which doesnt sound much, but when you are attempting to sleep for as much of it as possible its very much a welcome addition. After leaving the plane experienced our first ripping off of the trip in the shape of an over charged taxi, which we paid outright at the airport to the tune of 72 Reals which is about 18 pounds. To be fair we didnt actually consider it a rip off until about a week later ... read more

So England were out, it was raining and due to our predictable laziness the bus we wanted to get to Rio was sold out, not a great start to our final day in Salvador. Anyway after booking a later bus we split up to contemplate the loss and basically potter about. The night before we had met some French girls and boys and after meeting them after Englands demise i thought the best way to avoid the dwelling of the defeat was to get involved in the next game. After returning to the square where we watched the prior Brazil game tension was high and police were searching everyone, being French they decided to speak English for the game which was a good idea as the mood was tense anyway. During the game i was attempted ... read more

Samedi nous ... read more

We’ve arrived at our first destination - Rio de Janeiro and have been staying in a small guest house called ´chez Michel´run by, you guessed it, a French guy called Michel! It´s very laid back and friendly. Just the kind of place we need to get ourselves sorted out before we get started on the bikes. The culture shock arriving in Rio was nothing compared to our last trip when we arrived in Madras and nearly took the next plane home in a state of shock. Walking around Rio you could imagine being in a kind of European city really, obviously there are differences but they are not as marked as in other places we’ve been to. This is partly because we are staying in between the two famous beaches Ipanema and Copacabana. It’s the richest ... read more

We arrived in Rio on Wednes morning, and beat our way through the frantic crowd of taxi drivers to find some dude who said he was a tourista guide and was going to help us. He led us through the crowd of taxi guys to our bus and kept walking, beckoning us on. he kept muttering something about a big safe blue car, in pigeon english. It turned out he was just an industrious taxi driver willing to relieve two newbies of their wedge. We copped it and head back for the bus. Iano and Aoilo 1 - Rio 0. Weather that day wasnt great but we hit for the beach anyway. On the second day, we were picked up to do our tour of the favellas (shanty towns). we stopped off at some hostel and ... read more

Today was habibi's birthday and we went with a friend of ours to a dance party called B.I.T.C.H which is on every three months or so. It used to be at an amusement park until some queen fell out of the rollercoaster so now it is at some kind of pool/spa complex by the lagoon. The venue wasn't great but the music and atmosphere was good. It's true what they say though 'Rio is all about the day...and Sao Paulo is all about the night'. The parties and clubs here are nowhere as good as in Sao Paulo....but then again the beaches in Rio are beautiful and people here don't go to the beach to lie down and tan...most are standing up talking...drinking...flirting...its really a social event...especially on the weekends. ... read more

Sorry it’s been so long since my last blog, am sure everyone is waiting in anticipation for the next exciting instalment! We have been in South America for about 5 weeks now and having incredible time! Sen and I were really sad to leave New Zealand and team consumption, especially the Great Danes (missing you both loads!!!), not so bothered about Simon and old WHJ (for those of you who don’t know WHJ stands for Wandering hands Jackson - I feel Phil’s new nickname needs no more explanation than that!) since they were following us to Chile a few days later. Really liked Santiago we hadn’t heard great things about it and so were surprised by how much we loved it, may have had something to do with all the amazing food which after all the ... read more
