Ilha Grande (pronounced eee-la graaanjee), literally the ´big island´is indeed a big island, off the coast of brazil about halfway between Rio and Sao Paulo. The island is covered in Atlantic Rainforest, mountains, and few howler monkeys (which can scare the hell out of you when youre hiking alone through the jungle and youve never heard a howler monkey before). The entire island is accesible by trial (and only trail), leading to freezing cold natural springs and secluded beaches, one of which still has the remains of a prison..the island has been at times a leper colony and a prison island (its where they sent the, ahem, political prisoners). Man, if that´s how they treat the criminals and the lepers you know life is good in Brazil. The hostel was about the best thing I´ve ever ... read more

We arrived in Rio at our luxiourious hotel the Ipanema Plaza overlooking the beach to our left and the statue of Christ to the right - which even to this distance looks magnifico! The weather wasnt that great when we got there but in true British style we headed to the beach in our swim suits, whilst the locals in their thick jumpers handed us towels and offered as grilled cheese. The sand is the best we have ever seen - so fluffy! but obviously we didnt stay there for long. That night we headed for a Brazilian buffet. Maz peaked early and faded away as many do! It was very nice. Basically we learnt early that the buffet consists of providing the diners with a picture of a cow disected into 9 pieces and then ... read more

Rio... We have been a little unlucky with our Brazil weather (but it is winter) and have had some rain whilst in Rio. Nonetheless it is clearly a very beautiful city. Some would say that its the most beautiful in the world and I wouldn´t argue with that description. Theres something about it...more than either Sydney or Vancouver has. We´re staying in a small hotel in Copacabana. I unfortunately have the Barry Maniloe song going over and over in my head. The first night we headed out to check out some Rio clubs. Much like London its an expensive place to party, but it was fun. We took a guided taxi ride (from Louis with pretty good English, if only he didn´t get right and left mixed up) up to the peak of Corcovado (Hunckback in ... read more

So last time i left you we were shopping it up in the dizzy heights of Curitiba... We survived a rather posh night bus to Rio and then another bus ride down the coast before a 90 minute boat ride took us to Illa Grande. On a side note to anybody planning a night bus to anywhere...its ALL about the medicinal products. Any of the -azapam (valium) family will do and I´ve used a fair few varieties on this trip. (of note you can buy almost anything over the counter in Bolivia - much cheaper than at home, including antibiotics and antimalarials) This was well worth the trip. Its on all the must see lists for Brazil. A small island off the coast South of Rio with jungle inland and tropical beaches surrounding it. The town ... read more

South America » Brazil » Rio de Janeiro » Paraty August 24th 2006

To escape Rio de Janeiro, I traveled 4 hours south to a little colonial town called Paraty ("Pah rah chee") whose main attraction was its small size and lack of crime. I was fed up with feeling like a hostage in Rio, not being able to go anywhere by myself and feeling always on edge because of the very real possibility of violence at any moment. Paraty was the perfect antidote. When I arrived there, I decided that what I most wanted to do was to practice my new kayaking skills that I had learned in my kayaking class last month. Though everyone told me that the bay was smooth as glass and I could go out by myself, I wanted a guide and I was told that the nameless Big Bearded Man was my only ... read more

“Don’t let go,” she whispers wistfully in my ear. I smile. I’m overtaken with a vision to stay with this girl. Make love to her on the spartan hostel bed. It has been a month since someone has looked at me like this. But. I shake free. Move towards her friend. Take her close with an awkward air between us. Wave to the hostel manager. Grab my bag. My muscled strain as I pull it to my back. Outside it is drizzling. A woman walks a small dog and chats to her friend. I pass the corner bar. Think for a second about ordering one more capirinha. Decide against it. Turn onto Rua Gasteo de Cunha. The sea is far off, shrouded in grey. I can barely see the hills jutting from the ocean. I squint. ... read more

After taking the 7 hour bus from BH to Rio, I met Marcelo´s driver, Sergio, at the bus station. Yes, they have a driver... It´s pretty cool, he´ll take you anywhere, but the converstion was a little stale in the car, but that´s better than takig a taxi. Because Marcelo was working and busy with classes I got to hang out with his brother Felipe who just returned home from a 6 month stint in Europe where he was going to school in Spain and travelling around. I met Felipe for the first time and he´s a really cool guy. Where Marcelo is very talented in design and art and knows a lot of music, well, Felipe is the jock in the family. The first night Felipe and I met up with some friends I was ... read more
