In between our two visits to Rio, we popped to the simply stunning Ilha Grande for a week. The island is an hour and a half from the main land and is a protected reserve with amazing beaches, lots of forest and only one village which has no cars!! Without a doubt it is one of the most beautiful places we have ever been in our lives and after one week we didn´t want to leave. As well as spending the days lounging on the beaches around the village we walked for a couple of hours through the amazing forest, picking our way through tree roots, past giant boulders drawing in the vibrant forests energy. At the end of our walk we came to Lopez Mendes beach: a vast beach of white sand that crunched under ... read more

After all the hype about Rio we are pleased to announce that the city lives up to all expectations. We stayed just a few nights because staying in Ipanema (the safer part of town) is quite expensive, but we managed to see most of the sites. We spent some hours watching the beautiful people flaunting their stuff in tiny beachwear on Copacabana beach which was rather interesting! Perhaps the highlight was a favela (shanty town) tour which really challanged our stereotypical view of them. The favelas appeared after the Brazilian government failed to consider the poor (and the freed slaves) who flocked to find work in Rio. As a result they began to build their own homes on the hillside surrounding the city. What makes the favelas extraordinary is that they are outside the law. Three ... read more

Saturday evening I met up with my friend Marcelo. He actually lived in Edmonton last year at International House studying design at the UofA. We talked over msn and made plans to meet up with eachother. I think it´s pretty amazing when you can meet up with someone you actually know on the other side of the world, on Copacabana beach nontheless. Marcelo invited me to his friends birthday party happening in Lapa district. We first met up with his buddies Guilherme and Frede and had some beers at this local watering hole. One thing I like about Brasil is that drinks are cheap and you can buy/drink them in the street. Anyways, after a few wobbly pops we walked to the party. They had rented out a bar and it was enterance by invitation only. ... read more

From the hectic city of Rio, Gareth, Matt and I headed south to Ihla Grande. The hostel we stayed in was located at the end of the beach with great views looking out over the small island. For such a small island we assumed that there would not be much to do except chill on the beach all day, play a bit of football and try and body surf the huge waves. So that is exactly what we did for three days. The most strenuous part of the day was actually getting to the beach which involved a 2 1/2 hr trek over what felt like a mountain which was more a big hill (more than one I may add) and through what was a jungle although it could be argued it was a laid out ... read more

Hello everyone! Just to update you as to where we are at on our trek around Brazil - We're currently in Salvador, having completed a massive 29 hour bus journey from Rio - not a pleasant experience I can tell you. So in this travel blog, we will update you on our time in Rio. Initially stayed in Ipanema Thursday onwards, gorgeous beaches, and visited Sugar Loaf Mountain on the Saturday and spent some time on the beach watching the Volley Ball. We took the cable car to the top of Sugar Loaf, which had a fantastic view of Rio, if a little cloudy as were so high up. Hostel that we stayed in was pretty cool, enjoyed some very nice Caiprinhas at their bar very chilled out place. Also, visited the bar where 'Girl from ... read more

In the morning, we made our way to the beach. I can´t remember the name but it is just a small beach close to Pão de Açucar. There is a Naval Academy close by so there is less danger of getting robbed here (that is always a danger in Rio). Silvestre, Gustavo and I took a walk on a path around the coastal mountains. We saw many people fishing and even someone harpoon fishing for octapus, pretty cool. When we got back to the beach I had to get a cococut to drink the refreshing water inside. How perfect is that... sitting on the beach, drinking out of a coconut! It´s what every beach holiday must have. I was only missing the little paper umbrella. Finally it was time for me to go swimming. To the ... read more

There was only one reason for us to head back to Rio and that was for the Copa Final between Flamengo and Vasco Da Gama. To pass the time, the afternoon was spent visiting Sugar Loaf, 396 metres high overlooking Rio. The views from the top were spectacular and i'm sure even the photos don't justify how amazing it was. Early evening, Rio was buzzing with everyone awaiting the kick off between two of Rio's big guns. Fans lined the streets constantly letting off fireworks and singing. Arriving at the Maracana was unbelievable, the atmosphere was something i've never experienced at a football before. We were standing in the Flamengo end so it would have been suicidal to have supported Vasco. I can't describe how noisy it was inside the stadium but the fans were always ... read more

Spent my 23rd birthday sailing around Rio drinking Caipirinhas, was such an amazing day with big group of people from the hostel and some of them organized a cake for me at which point I apparently became quite emotional and kept talking about how much this display of kindness from strangers meant to me!!! oh dear! Anyway after several more nights out in Rio (the 2 big J´s will be pleased to know only takes me 3 Caipirinhas to get hammered!! so my drinking has not ... read more

With a steaming hangover and after only 2 hours sleep, we woke at 4.30 to grab a cab to Rio´s terminal omnibus only to be given the run around trying to find the right kiosk to buy our tickets. Eventually we navigated our way to the right departure point and boarded our 3 hour coach to Angra dos Reis, the port at which we were to get our ferry to Ilha Grande. Having known a little Spanish already, we found the portuguese of Brazil a totally different prospect and it was beginning to knock my multilingual confidence. Thankfully we were lucky to meet up with a lovely Belgian couple who spoke good Portuguese and spent a couple of hours sitting at the port waiting for our ferry. As we sat on the front of the schooner ... read more
