Thanks to Ryan, an american guy who rented our spare room for a few days, we finally did some sightseeing. Went downtown to check out the huge and strange looking Metrolpolitan Church before catching the old (and a bit scary) mountain trolly up to Santa Teresa. Santa Teresa is a small town up on the mountain just 15 minutes from down town Rio. According to legend it started out as a refuge for escaped slaves back in the days when Rio was the main slave port of South America and later people moved here to escape a yellow fever epedemic. In the end of the 19th century Santa Teresa became popular with the wealthy people and as a result there are many amazing victorian mansions clinging to the mountain side. ... read more

Well, here I am back in Rio - 4 days ahead of schedule!! Salvador was definitely not my kind of place. Too many tourists, too much hassle - just too much in general..... We spent our second day there on the beach. We thought it would be good to get out of town and get a bit of peace and quiet. No such luck! I made the error of sitting up on my chair to buy a drink - big mistake. Some bloke ended up with my foot in his hands trying to give me a massage and would not take "no" for an answer. Not entirely sure why he would want my feet in his hands but he was determined to ascertain (somehow) that I was healthy. Anyway, the foot massage extended into a leg ... read more

Have been in Rio a few days now and its like a holiday from our holiday. Staying in a nice apartment in Ipanema which by total fluke is only two blocks from the gay beach...need to work on my tan before I go there though. Weather is nice and warm and we have spent most of our time on the beach so far. Hopefully we will get motivated to see some of the sights eventually... Congrats on the job Eva!... read more

It´s about a week since we left Paraty, but we´re only just catching up with the blog. A lot has changed in a week, we´re in a new country (Argentina), it´s cold, we got thoroughly wet and muddy at the weekend. The lovely memories of Brazil are fading fast! Paraty marked the final stop on our trip down the Costa Verde. It is a protected historical town with handsome colonial buildings, no traffic and wide cobbled streets that disappear under water in the rainy season. The architecture is very simple - low white buildings with brightly painted window and door frames. The town as a whole seemed to be a bit of a magnet for arty types and musicians. Galleries everywhere and fabulous restaurants and bars with live music at lunch and dinner times. Sneaky cover ... read more

Well it´s been a tough week. We knew travelling would be challenging at times, but never expected we´d have to spend a whole week stuck on a tropical island, sunbathing, snorkelling and messing about in boats... We caught the bus from Rio down the Costa Verde. I had rather stupidly packed the travel sickness pills deep in my backpack which was stowed in the luggage hold. I felt more and more ill as the coach wound its way round the coastal road. We stopped in Angra dos Reis, hopped into a taxi that took us to the port and then got straight on a passenger boat ready to leave for Ilha Grande. Not time to rummage for the Stugeron then either. Those who know me will understand how much greener I got as the boat made ... read more

Ilha Grandella aurinko on jo laskenut ja selailemme internettia paikallisen Pousadan pihalla. Pousada on paikallinen ns. majatalo, vaikka Suomessa olisi vaikea kuvitella niiden pihoilla kasvavan palmuja (toisaalta kuka haluaisi niiden pihoilla kasvavan katajia...

We arrived in Rio on April 9th pretty late and, getting a bus because the airport taxis were very overpriced, it seemed really exciting, a new country, a new language, arriving in the middle of the night. We’d booked ourselves a nice hotel online. $100 for the room was well over budget but nice for the first few days in a place like Rio, and only a block from the famous Copacabana beach. For the next three days we walked around the beachside neighbourhood, sitting on the beach in the day, and checking out the stalls selling gear to tourists and the restaurants at night, drinking beer and watching prostitutes flirt with potential customers. We both liked Rio from the start, and it felt exciting, even if we were only there a few days. I’d heard ... read more

We arrived in Rio after dark and it took a full day before we were able to glimpse the Big Jesus. Didn´t really feel like we were in Rio until we had seen him. Stepping out onto Ipanema beach on our first morning was pretty wonderful all the same. The atmostphere in Rio was fun straight away. Knowing we would be tired after our flight from Madrid, we had booked a transfer from the airport. A very friendly guy, Paolo, and his son were there to meet us and despite our non-existent Portuguese and their faltering but enthusiastic English we were soon gesticulating at each other quite merrily. Graham got them talking about football and that seemed to do the trick. A universal language. World cup fever is truly everywhere here. The streets are adorned with ... read more
