If you asked Lynny and I what we were looking foward to first before we left, we probably replied 'Ilha Grandé'. In that respect , it was all a bit of a dissapointment. After 3 hours (bus & boat) from Rio we arrived at the only real town on the island 'Abraáo'. It's very picturesque, a modern purpose built little town/village surrounded by jungle and boats. The whole island is jungle, our pousada (b&b) was practically in it!! We liked Abraáo, peaceful and clean, right on the water, everything we needed. Unfortunately, we found that on this side of the island, the beaches weren't great. Stunning backdrops but mostly dirty from boats and currents bringing in general (mostly natural) rubbish. Bush tucker trial 1: The island has treks mapped out to beaches and sights so we ... read more

I can´t belive I´ve only been here a week, it feels like ages. The most important thing is the weather is great - hot and sunny every day. Have managed not to get burnt so far but I guess there´s plenty of time for that. Eventually started work at my placement this week. Monday was orientation day but the guy that runs my project wasn´t there so he was going to pick me up on Tuesday at 9am. Being on Brazil time this eventually changed to 11am, 1pm and then 3pm. Needless to say he didn´t turn up at 3 either! Nor the next day................. I eventually started teaching on Thursday. The project is called Danca pra Galera, which means dance to the crowd. As well as English the kids are taught dance, environmental issues and ... read more

Arrived in Rio safely, to be greeted by rain, arrrgghh! It wasn't the best of starts as we got rail roaded into taking a taxi from the airport (the bus station was supposed to be 'not too safe' in Rio) and we were still jet lagged. As we drove through the streets we tried to explain to the driver in our limited Portuguese (one phrase book) that we wanted to go to a street and then find a hostel from there. He couldn´t understand that we didn't have a reservation. After arriving in the street we wanted we paid and got out of the cab to torrential rain!!! It was only after 10 minutes walking through the street that I realised I´d left my wallet in the cab, with my cards in it! Not the best ... read more

three songs were stuck in my head the whole time we were there: copa.... copacabana the girl from ipanema her name is rio and dances on the sand... i know, pretty typical. but you can't help think of them when you're on the beach. rio was a beautiful city. amazing beaches, breathtaking natural backdrop of mountains and greenery, and gorgeous people. i swear, 80% of the people there have sculpted bodies. one thing we couldn't get past was how every guy wears speedos. i kept trying to look away whenever an old dude would walk by, all greased up, and wearing an outfit tinier than most women in america would wear. i guess what made up for it, though, was that almost every woman was wearing a g-string. woohoo! i guess teresa and i both enjoyed ... read more

So made it to the airport and caught the plane to Rio De Janeiro, Arrived Monday 17th April and caught an extortionately priced radio cab to Ipanema.... Gary lost his wallet in the taxi and we got caught in a monsoon looking for a hostel..... Not the best of starts!! After 24 hours of rain things did improve.... Tuesday took the cable car up Sugar Loaf Mountain, but unfortunately it was overcast..... Wednesday went to Corcovado to see JC and took the cog train up the mountain.... definately the best views in Rio and timing was excellent as the cloud broke for sunset.... To clarify DIRTY BARS are not what you might think..... the name comes from a French traveller in our hostel called Omar who referred to the street bars where the locals drink and ... read more

The past few days have mostly been spent on the beach, sleeping and watching football. This place lives and breaths the game!! There is football on the beach, the streets and every bar you walk past has a game on. No wonder they are bloody good! Last night we went to the Maracanã Stadium to watch Fluminense vs Goais. The atmosphere was brilliant!! Massive flags, flares, drums, the lot! The home team won from a penalty taken the end we were sitting in which was great!! We have a very happy Graham today as we managed to find an English bar that was showing the West Ham game. The Lord Jim in Ipanema. Amazingly 8 or so other West Ham fans had the same idea! Typical me missed the goal as I was in the loo! ... read more

Well, I´ve arrived safe and sound in Rio. It´s 7.20am, it´s 20C, the sun is shining and it´s the start of the weekend! I´ve just been dropped off at the house I´ll be staying in for the next 7 weeks and it´s very nice. Rooftop terrace with jacuzzi, views of Corcovado, Sugar Loaf and the bay. It doesn´t get much better - unless I was sitting here with a beer but it´s a little early, even for me. I´m sure I´ll be getting my pasty skin down to the beach later on and tomorrow I´m off to the football at Maracana - probably looking a bit red and burnt if previous trips to the beach are anything to go by. Anyway, I´ve got the weekend off before starting work on Monday so I better make the ... read more

...... until yesterday anyway ;-) We arrived in the rain and at first glance the airport looked like Heathrow, we thought we had gone full circle!! After fighting our way through the taxi touts we got a bus to Copocabana giving us a good look at the City straight away (it took over an hour as it was rush hour). Rio certainly is 'the city of contrast'. The first thing we notice is Rio is BUSY, always so much going on, its fun! With the beautiful surroundings and diversity between rich and poor in the city our photos won't do it justice (especially Lynny's). Our hostel is great, like a little relaxation den owned by Newton who loves to show us backpackers round the city. Due to the weather and tiredness our first day was spent ... read more

Today I did something for the second time in my life. Something that, until three weeks ago, I swore I would never ever do, because it is a seemingly exceptionally stupid thing to do, even though millions of people do it, and even though I am known to do plenty of other seemingly exceptionally stupid things from time to time. Something that I still find exceedingly difficult to do, partly because of the stupidity, but mostly because of anatomy. I put in contacts. Seemingly stupid - no, seemingly retarded - because who, I ask rhetorically, would ever dare to stick foreign objects into one's eyes. And exceedingly difficult because I have tiny little eyes and giant cumbersome fingers, traits handy for moles and moles only. But I went through with it and subsequently found myself snorkeling ... read more

This entry is a little different then many of my others. I have tended to keep my feelings out of most of the entries and instead offered general descriptions and observations. When I have had to, I have described my feelings in very general terms: "I like," "I don´t like," "it was fun," "there was no one there." But, something happened back home - the death of a friend - which really marked my time in Rio, and I felt like I needed to write about it. Arriving in Rio and Meeting the Group My first day in Rio started off normal. On Saturday I took a morning flight from Salvador and went straight to the meeting point for our tour, a somewhat shady hotel 4 blocks from the Copcabana beach. The only other person who ... read more
