I had met a group of British girls in Mendoza who were basically doing the same trip as me but in the opposite direction. “You’ll find things will get less and less developed the further you go north”, they told me. As our tour of the Uyuni Salt Flats crossed from Chile into Bolivia, this statement became apparent. While you got to continue on the asphalt road towards the Argentinian border, the turnoff to the Bolivian border was a dirt one. It was symbolic – it was time to go to a place less developed. Getting into the Toyota Landcruiser at the border that would be driving us across to Uyuni over the next three days, it was good to have our Mendoza crew together for the trip – me, Sybe, Fleur, Teo and Nicola.

Baráčky kolem silnice byly maličké a nejspíš jednopokojové.

The challenges of the mountains in Peru Well, I was looking forward to the next few days as we rode into new territory for us in Peru. We had no problems leaving Lima as we headed down the coast to Pisco before turning east and heading into the high Andes. The ride to Ayacucho was just a bikers dream, except for the snow and 2deg C temperatures as we climbed to over 4,000 meters with stunning views,we finally arrived just on dark as the rain started. The following day was a ride to Urabamba in the Sacred Valley out of Cusco, we knew it was going to be a big day as it was over 500km (turned out to be 604km), well we can do that easy on a good day, but what we didn't realise ... read more

We were looking forward to our arrival in Sucre because it meant we'd have a home for more than a couple of days at a time. We rented a small apartment with our own bathroom and kitchen and you'd think we hit the lottery with the amount of excitement between us upon seeing our new home. It's the small things that we've begun to appreciate more and more as we travel along. The first few days were pretty laid back as Kristine settled into her new school and we explored the city streets for cafes and parks to hangout at. On our first weekend we decided to take a trek for two days to Maragua crater, just outside the city limits of Sucre. We met up with our guide and another couple from Australia early Satuday ... read more

Urubamba to puno We set off just before 8 and road with Jeff and Deane to the Salinas de Maras to check out the inca salt flats. We were pleased we went as they were pretty impressive. I played tour guide and read out information about the history and how they were formed which I'd previously screen shotted. Travelling today it was interesting to note the extreme poverty. It seems a lot of the people spend their days sitting on the side of the road minding their stock. The women carry large loads of wood on their backs, presumably firewood. It certainly is a different world than the one we live in. We then set off for Puno stopping a few times for photos, petrol and snacks. We arrived around 3.30 where we settled for the ... read more

Urubamba to Machu Picchu A quick breakfast at the break of dawn and our taxi awaited to the train station. Our cabin was very comfortable with windows in the ceiling to take advantage of the mountain views. We arrived at the bus station to ride up to Machu Picchu at around 8.15. We couldn't find our guide so proceeded to walk around on our own (along with a few thousand others). We wanted to climb Wayna Picchu first but found that if you want to do this it needs to be booked about three months in advance. So we decided to go and see if we could find our guide via the information centre. Trev and Deane found him (Felix) and we had a guided tour around the ruins. Next we walked up to the sun ... read more

Chaotic La Paz pulses with life at a dizzying, freezing 3650 meters/12,000 ft, its wild traffic dominated by crammed, black-smoke belching, ancient buses and tourist-robbing taxis, its buildings either half-finished brick, or steel and glass high-rises, both climbing steep, lung-busting streets crowded with indigenous women in flouncy skirts and bowler hats selling fresh orange juice and snacks, hand-woven goods and trinkets. I'd been in La Paz a couple of times before, but this time was special, for while there, March-May, 2014, I had adventures with several, fabulous TravelBloggers (TBers), witnessed colorful festivals, including Carnival, Holy Week, and May Day, and lots of protests, as well as experiencing the darker underbelly of the city in this poorest nation in the Americas. As always, I stayed in the heart of the city in a beautifully restored old ... read more

From San Pedro de Atacama, we booked a three-day Uyuni jeep tour with Atacama Mistica. A friend we made in Santiago recommended them after travelling with them, and a tour agency in San Pedro also highly recommended them, hence we decided to go with this reputable company. We were picked up from our hostel and taken to the border of Chile and Bolivia. Both the Chilean and Bolivian immigration was very quick as the queue was not very big. We were given sandwiches with Coca tea for breakfast; Coca tea is pretty big in the Atacama region of Chile and in places of higher altitude in Bolivia to help the body to acclimatise. The Coca leaf is used to make cocaine, but the leaves have other health properties, as I've just mentioned. The tea itself, once ... read more

After an unforgettable month in Peru we hopped on a bus and headed for Bolivia. The over night ride wasn't too bad since we slept most of it but when we arrived at the border crossing things got a little more interesting. Our bus driver stopped the bus and made everyone get off and we were told to walk across the border where we could get our visas and the bus would be waiting for us on the other side In Bolivia. Before we got our Bolivian visas we needed to get our exit stamp from Peru and the slip of paper we needed to present at that time with our passports was in our backpacks on the bus so we needed to get out of line, exchange money and buy new ones and fill them ... read more
