South America » Bolivia December 21st 2015

Geo: -16.2902, -63.5887As recommanded by my new friend Sarah, whom I met in Santiago, once arrived in San Pedro de Atakama, I looked for the travel agency "Cruz Andina" to book a 4-day-trip to Bolivia. Lionel, who was going to be our guide, gave me all necessary infos and made me a very good price (125.000 $ CLP). Afterwards I returned to the hostel I had found just before and where I would camp that night. I spent the afternoon discovering the center of San Pedro de Atakama with it's nice artisanal markets and relaxing at the pool of my hostel. I must say the first night in my new tent was terrible : it was really really cold and without any mattress the floor was soo hard. Well, I survived but I should buy somewhere ... read more

Hello! Today we are in Bolivia. It was an aweful trip to get here but we made it. The flight was awful but what really got me was that at the airport they charge you $160 American for a visa to get in and they won't take any twenties that have a single minute rip on them. So you already feel violated, like Bolivia does not want you here, having to pay this massive extortion fee and then they won't take your perfectly good money. Just to warn you think twice about a very short Bolivian trip. It is not cheap at all to get into this country. I made a rookie mistake and didn't check visa reqs before coming here as I've never needed them south of the border. Learn from my mistakes! We arrived ... read more

Oft dachte ... read more

Give yourselves a well-deserved pat on the back, folks, for enduring our incoherent ramblings that could lately best be characterized as a how-not-to-do-it guide for bike touring in South America. As a reward for your perseverance in following us on our circuitous, often directionless route (literally) that one fellow long-haul cyclist kindly described as "complicated", this will be our last journal entry that you'll have to suffer through. After having completed a 4,100 mile (6,600 km) bike trek that included over 200,000 vertical feet of total ascent, the loss of every ounce of body fat that either of us had (and one trip to a hospital in Salta that looked like a stage scene from 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest'), we've decided to end our ride in Bolivia and carry on our travels in South ... read more

South America » Bolivia » La Paz Department » Copacabana December 5th 2015

Booking our bus to Copacabana, on the shores of the famous Lake Titicaca, could not have been easier. We simply asked the lady at the hotel reception and she did the rest. "El bus recogera ustedes a las ocho menos cuarto por la manana, manana", she told us. All done. At about 7.30am or siete y media we got a knock on our door while I was still in just my underpants. A lady stood there and said "en cinco minutos el bus estara listo a recoge ustedes". "Pero, es siete y media solo - la senora dijonos que el bus llega a las ocho menos cuarto", I replied. In any case we were downstairs with our bags at 7.40am - five minutes earlier that we were initially told but five minutes later than when we ... read more

The overnight bus ride from Sucre to La Paz was long and winding. Peering out the window at one of our stops, I noticed that we had gone all the way back to Potosi again! It wasn't the most comfortable ride - the on-board toilet was out of action and the bus was freezing until about 3am, when the driver finally remembered to switch on the heating. So I didn't have the best night's sleep. We had bought camas for the ride but they weren't really the 180° incline seats we were promised - they were more like a wider semi-cama - so more like something between a cama and a semi-cama. Arriving at the bus station in La Paz, we made sure that we caught an officially licenced "bubble" taxi - lucky there was a ... read more

South America » Bolivia » Potosí Department » Salar de Uyuni November 30th 2015

Other worldly is how we would describe our tour through Salar de Uyuni, the salt flats of Southern Bolivia. We ended our stay in Bolivia with an amazing three day trip through some of the most spectacular terrain either of us has ever scene. From the white vistas on the salt flats to the blues, greens and reds of the lagoons, we were on a sensory overdose that kept us high throughout our final days in Bolivia. From there we would cross over the sandy boarder into chile for the next part of our Journey. Like we've done so many times before, we hopped on an overnight bus to Uyuni which is the starting point of all the salt tours going from north to south. When our bus finally stopped it was 4 am and our ... read more

"Oh no, not another bigger shithole." Those were the words of Theo as we pulled into well, another bigger shithole. Luckily it wasn't our final destination, Potosi. Well, actually it was. Shit. But it was just the outskirts of one of the highest city in the world, thankfully. I had expected Bolivia to be poor, but not this poor. I hadn't seen this amount of crumbling, incomplete buildings since Egypt. Poverty is always sad to see though and it constantly serves as a reminder of how lucky we in the developed world are. I think my Spanish has improved - and it also helps that Bolivians speak more slowly and clearly. I can actually understand the people here. This became apparent at the bus station we arrived at in Potosi, as I got the lady collecting ... read more

South America » Bolivia » Potosí Department » Uyuni November 24th 2015

‘Salt plane, Salt plane. Yay, we’re going on a salt plane!’ Nathan was even more excited than I was about going to Uyuni to see the salt flats, and that is saying something. It had something to do with a misunderstanding though. He thought the salt plane was our means of transport and not the destination. We was wrong about that. I think the mode of transport must have been a spaceship, because where we landed seemed like another planet. The space ships, which looked like buses, took us from sunny Copacobana on the shore of Lake Titicaca to La Paz first. We have seen Quito and Lima already and from what I’d heard, La Paz would be even less appealing to us. So we were fortunate enough to get on an overnight bus that departed ... read more

South America » Bolivia » Potosí Department » Uyuni November 23rd 2015

Let měl trvat 40 minut a proti tomu autobus to měl jet 16 hodin. Pak ji projeli žehličkou a chtěli to ode mně podepsat.
