THE CULT OF PACHAMAMA...Catholicism Unplugged. Cusco in Peru was a stopover to kill some time. Some say "When in Peru, Cusco is the place to be". But when winging it, it was to us, only a maybe. So locked our gear at the bus station and to the Plaza de Armas for a look around. Spanish cathedrals boasting of colonial excesses of the past...smiling like powerful masters built to last. Catholicism in all its splendour. Yet that first look hid a spiritual under-belly that was there for all to see...but only if one is awake enough to reflect...and if like us...in amazement...to so see. An under-belly that threw our perceptions of Catholicism into disarray. And so I present our findings. But please...we beseech the faithful...I do NOT shine light on this to cause you to stray. ... read more

Bolivia 4x4 Adventure: Going to Bolivia for an American is not exactly easy. For some reason the American government doesn’t like the Bolivian government and they make it difficult for Bolivians to come to America. Thus, the Bolivians make it hard for us to come to Bolivia. You can, you just have to pay $160 USD, provide 2 passport photos, a yellow fever card, proof of hotel reservations and full itinerary. Yeah, a bit different than going to Europe, huh? I wasn’t about to let this scare me away though. I did a lot of research and I was a bit worried that I didn’t have my yellow fever card with me, but I had the money and the photos so I wasn’t too concerned. Bolivia was not on our original honeymoon itinerary. This came up ... read more

"Let's take a bit of ... read more

9th December: Breakfast this morning was at 6.30 as we had to catch our bus that would take us out of Peru and into Bolivia. At the border we met our new guide Julia, however Jhon would still be our guide for a couple more days, but couldn't help us across the border as there could have been issues with police if he was see guiding in Bolivia. When we arrived in La Paz, Juilia took us on a short walking tour of the city to show us some of the main places like the witches markets, main square and presidential palace. After this we were keen to organise our next day, mountain biking down the famous Death Road. We found a company willing to take the ten of us who were keen the next day ... read more

One more day till Buenos Aires, yay! Well…hopefully. I made a semi-stupid mistake. Just lack of planning, really. I assumed that there would be a boat load of flights from huge international airport, La Paz and huge international airport, Buenos Aires. This just in: there isn’t. Not past 8am at least. I should’ve done Death Road and Salar de Uyuni back to back as soon as I arrived in La Paz like I originally planned. But no, I got suckered into exploring the “beautiful” city, La Paz, for a day with the girls. Now, the only relatively short flight (seven hours total) leaves at 8am. This would normally be fine, but I supposedly get back from my Salar de Uyuni tour at 7am. This leaves me exactly one hour to get to the airport before the ... read more

Fuck Bolivia. Fuck Bolivia. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. I’ve had it with this country! The bus that was to leave at 7pm still hasn’t left. It is approaching 9pm! I am going to miss my flight because of boulders!! But more on that later... Getting here was a nightmare too. Red Planet’s plan was to drop me off “where the bus will be stationed” at 6:30pm. Great. Nope — I’m in Bolivia. We get there and there is no bus stop. Not even a bench, hell — not even a paved section! Their plan was to literally drop me off, by myself, on the side of the highway. Drop me with the instructions of, “Don’t worry, the bus will be here.” I turn red. “Are you joking me?! You’re going to leave me here, stranded, on the ... read more

Warning: This entry involves pooping. Get over it. I’ve had a realization. When it comes to traveling, me and pooping don’t get along. When I first got here nothing would come. Now? it won’t stop. That’s right, I have contracted what I found on WebMD is called Traveller’s Diarrhea. Sexy, I know. It actually started the second day of the Inca Trail. I didn’t think much of it at first, but when the symptoms lasted for more than a week, I knew something wasn’t right. Of course this happened! I mean think about it, there is zero soap in any of the bathrooms on this trail, let alone toilet paper. Unless the porters are hauling up a full carton of hand soap and proper sink, I don’t really know how they are keeping their hands at ... read more

On the 20 hour trek to Bolivia I met two girls. Before I get into that, why was the trek 20 hours? Well, after the eight hour bus ride to what I thought was to Copacabana, it actually was to Puno, the other side of Lake Titicaca -- the Peru side. I scrambled, half awake, to find out my next move. I was in a bus station full of non-english speakers. Body language goes a long way, I find. After an hour and a half layover, I finally was on the bus — rather van— to Copacabana. That’s where I met the two girls. Ferdanine (Fer) was from Mexico, she has long wavy brown hair and black eyes. She is just 19. Mikaela is from Sweeden, quite the opposite look: dirty blonde with blue eyes. They ... read more
