Dejamos Santa Cruz para ... read more

We just finished our three day adventure through the south west corner of Bolivia. Let me back up for a moment. In San Pedro de Atacama, an adventure wonderland, we visited the highest geyer field in the world, Geyers del Tatio, for sunrise. The steam at that hour of the day is at it´s strongest. inside the geyser holes, I´m sure Mark knows the correct term for this, is algea and micro-organism... perhaps the first to every inhabit the planet. Near the geyers was a hot springs that i bravely decided to dip in to. just as i was decending the wall into the warm water a naked german man jumped out of the pool. a little too much german for 8am. In the afternoon we went on a hike through a salt gorge...caves, walls, paths...everything ... read more

We caught the train to Uyuni after spending a couple of drenched days (refer to previous blog) in Oruro. We arrived late at night and met three swiss people who we joined with to find a trip to the Uyuni salt flats. We found a company that was recommended to them for 4 day / 3 night trips so we decided to go with them. Little did we know that 2 south african retirees were travelling on the trip with us. The 4WD we travelled in comfortably holds about 6 passengers so with 9 (including the guide and the driver who doubled as the cook) it was a tight sqeeze as we travelled about 800km down to the Chilean boader. Our first stop on the first day was the salt flats (Salar de Uyuni). The salt ... read more

Jumping off the bus at 6:00 I managed, with the help of an Australian couples lonely planet, work out where the hoastel that id selected was located. I arrived at the hostel (HI Hoastel de Salar de Uyuni) to dicover a "full" sign stuck to the side window. I decided to wait outside in the cold for the place to open and find out if anyone would be checking out that day anyway. At 7:00 the owner opened the place up and i discovered that the hoastel was far from full (sign must have been up since the summer or something) The Hoastel was very nice and all the rooms were located off a large well light hall. The room was incredibly basic (not even any plug sockets) with the window looking into the hall. I ... read more

The tours across the salt flats from San Pedro to Uyuni are supposedly renowned for bad food accomodation drivers getting drunk or falling asleep and for generally being pretty shit despite the amazing scenery. But dont worry our tour didnt live up to any of our expectations and was absolutely brilliant with great food and our driver was an absolute legend. The tour started at about 8 ish in San Pedro from here we had to go to immigration and get stamped out of line, here however things got interesting with Peter turning to Triona and saying ¨oh shit im going to spew, ill be back in a minute¨ With this he wandered off and spewed in the middle of the desert so much for the driest place on earth! Back in the line things got ... read more

Meidän kyyti maksoi 60USD per nuppi, mutta jotkut olivat saaneet saman jopa kymmenen dollaria halvemmalla (damn it!). Oltiin kuitenkin ihan tyytyväisiä tourin hintaan, koska La Pazin lentokentällä nähty kaveri tyrkytti meille sama... read more

Driving Bolivian dirt roads in the rainy season is an interesting and character building experience... and very crazy and slightly nightmarish. The drive from the Bolivian border to Uyuni and from Uyuni to La Paz was a memorable drive for all involved which will probably not be repeated in the near future! According to our map this trip involved driving down dirt roads... little did we know what this might mean for the month of January. We started off by picking up two Argentinian young men (who had been waiting for some form of transport for the last 3 hours) and then we headed north. It was a bad road to start with and then the rain started falling. Our maximum speed dropped to about 25km and James had a difficult time negotiating the mud slosh ... read more
