Start onze walk on the wild side! We bemerken ... read more

Wow, Bolivia is so much different than Argentina, its strange how they can be right next to eachother but so, so different. Bolivia is the poorest country in South America, therefore very cheap, which I like, but it is also very dirty, which Andrew does not like. I met 3 Germans at the Argentina-Bolivia border, we were all headed for Uyuni, and after a bumpy 8 hour bus ride, which was nothing like the buses in Argentina, we had arrived. We were all planning on doing the 3 day tour of the area surrounding Uyuni so we decided to do it together. In our group there was also a French couple, who were very nice. The 3 days went something like this... Day 1: The first day was very fun, probably the best out of ... read more

So I left Villa Tunari and Parque Machia about a week ago... mas o menos. My last bit of time there was, of course, beautiful. Saying goodbye wasn't too hard, but I definitely miss it and want to return at some point. There's something about simply living (specifically spending my days out in the jungle with a puma) that makes everything quite wonderful. But ah, there's was, and are, many more things to look forward to... traveling more and Macama and home, family, seeing friends, summer, SCAD. Everything. The first thing my dad said when I saw him at Macama for parents weekend was, "you're a lucky girl, aren't you?" and how true it is... I really don't know what I did to deserve this. Er, I guess I didn't do anything. It's just the ... read more

Our Jeep trip in Bolivia, which we know as 4 x 4, was one of the highlights so far. We were spoilt with 2 vehicles complete with a driver come guide for 4 people, that meant we had a vehicle all to ourselves. Laura and Kengo (Ken) would be our jeep mates for the next 3 days. Laura is from Holland, although her English and Spanish are very good. Laura thanks for all the Spanish lessons. Kengo, from Japan, on the other hand spoke very little English. His English was as good as our Spanish, need we say more. We ended up having a great time as we spoke Afrikaans to Laura and she spoke Dutch back. We are still amazed at the similarity between the languages, although Afrikaans is a derivative of Dutch. We ... read more

Uyuni is a town not very close to anywhere else. In fact its a long and windy dirt road from most places, which in a bus with a driver who may or may not have had any previous driving experience can be a terrifying or an exhilerating experience. depending on how you look at things. Uyuni was our next destination due to the intrigue of the amazing salt plains and the vast countryside that we would experience out there in the surrounding Salar de Uyuni. We dusted ourselves off after our bus experience out of Potosi and we were warmly welcomed by some locals who were waiting for some other gringos. they knew our hotel and its owner - an amigo of theirs and then kindly offered to drive us there. the 2 block walk was ... read more

Arrived safe and sound in Bolivia, and now all set up for a 3 day tour of the Salar de Uyuni starting 10am tomorrow. My opinion of Bolivia so far... well it´s very different from Argentina. Straight away from the border at La Quaica-Villazon the difference was evident. An explosion of gnarly old women wearing ill-fitting bowler hats and bright ´ethnic´ garb and carrying cute smiley kids on their backs. Of course that wasn´t quite the first impression. The first impression was being kicked out of the bus on the argentinian side at 6am into a bus terminal full of locals, one of whom seemed to be throwing up everywhere. We huddled together to keep warm (unfortunately a group of unruly israelis decided to huddle up close and then use or rucksacks for a sofa) till ... read more

Finally in Bolivia! The overnight journey from Salta in Argentina to the border town was the prediction of what was to await us in Bolivia. Bumpy roads, people shuffling seats on the bus, and cold nights. I was first seated next to a young female tourist but ended up (not sure how and why) being seated next to an overweight but friendly Bolivian in his 60s. Right as we met, he very proudly mentioned he had been visiting with his “senora” in Salta but he later also added that he also had a wife and family in Bolivia. Still, he never quite admitted that he in fact had two girlfriends! I stopped questioning his ethics when he pulled out his large winter coat and covered the both of us so we did not freeze at ... read more

Crossing into Villazon (Bolivia) from La Quiaca (Argentina) is so laid back that Claire missed it, wheeling her bike past passport control and a man in a green uniform lounging against a lamp post, and into the main trading street of Villazon. Despite the uniformed official's lacked of interest, Claire decided to turn back to indulge in her share of border bureaucracy. Even though words in capital letters at the top of our entry forms were blunt about the need to answer all 22 questions, no-one bothered to check the forms or the information on them against our passports. A young man — surely he was no older than 16? — stamped us through for 30 days, even though we had asked for 90. The young man shrugged. Bienvenidos a Bolivia, amigos. South-western Bolivia is ... read more

From San Pedro we climbed to 4000 meters onto the Altiplano, crossing the border from Chile to Bolivia. Most people were feeling pretty crap with the altitude, headaches and lack of energy. The simple task of getting off the truck to go for a bush pee was quite an effort. We had picked up a guide for the Altiplano at the Bolivian border. It was necessary as there were no roads, just tracks left by other vehicles, and no signs. We stopped first at Lago Blanco (White Lake) and then at Lago Verde (Green Lake). The Lake is green because of the Magnesium and Arsenic in the water. We had to climb to over 5000 meters to get the truck stamped into Bolivia. Then we came back down a bit. We visited a thermal pool ... read more
