Published: March 7th 2006South America » Bolivia » Potosí Department » UyuniEnglish We have noticed that the number of comments and visits to this blog is decreasing. Hence, this time we have decided to amaze you with the best landscapes and probably the pictures of our trip. The southwest part of Bolivia is simply out of this world. Last time we wrote we were in Tupiza waiting for somebody to join us for the famous 4 days jeep tour to the Salar de Uyuni. We had to wait two days... but at the end we found two amazing fellows, Seraphin and Antonella. Probably the most original guys we have met so far. Two mystical germans, the first ones who put forward an alternative way of travelling independently. Instead of relying on the Lonely Planet (or on similar guides), their trip was based on a different book: the ... read more
We entered Bolivia on the 3rd of March from San Pedro on a 4x4. the road into Bolivia from Chile is a dirt track the road to Argentina however, it tarmac! We climbed up to an altidude to over 4000m. I was in a jeep with 3 people from Austria and 2 people from Switzerland, all German speaking.. but they kindly spoke in English so I could understand. (Apart from the driver who was from Bolivia). The first place we stopped was Laguna Blanco - the white lake, white because of borax, it was stunning.. It was silvery and had loads of flamingos. The next lake was Laguna Verde, we were here for about 1 hour and in that time the lake changed from being green and transparent to become green/touquise and opaque. I couldnt believe ... read more
Crossing the Great White Lake / Cruzando el Gran Lago Blanco
Published: June 8th 2006South America » Bolivia » Potosí Department » Uyuninot sure if you are viewing the maps at all, but this one's worth having a look at! Click on the link and read the comment at the bottom See movies asssociated with this blog here As we mentioned in our last page, we had decided to cross into Bolivia in a 4x4, a trip lasting 3 days and 2 nights and which promised to be both interesting and a lot of fun. We went with a company called "Estrella del Sur" which was the only one in town taking the traditional route, i.e. crossing the Salt Flat despite the fact that it was 80% under water. The other companies were not taking the risk, meaning they would be spending the second night in Uyuni instead of in the Salt Hotel, which we thought sounded like ... read more

4WD from San Pedro to Uyuni
Published: February 8th 2006South America » Bolivia » Potosí Department » UyuniFrom San Pedro we took a 4WD tour across the border and over the Andes and altiplano to the city of Uyuni in Bolivia. San Pedro is at 2300 meters and during the first hour a bus took us to the border control at 4100 meters and the effects of the high altitude were quickly noticed. After crossing the border we changed from a bus to jeeps and started the most amazing off-road ride of our lives. Beautiful colored lakes with lots of flamingoes, snowcapped mountains, volcanoes, bare rocky landscape, oddly shaped rocks and geysers. There's so many amazing things to see around here. On the first day we drove to Laguna Blanca, Laguna Verde, hot springs, volcanic field, and Laguna Colorada, where we stayed the night. After a difficult night at high altitude we drove ... read more
Before I started my travels down in South America, I had many visions of the obstacles I would face over those two months. Fears of theft (and worse), endless challenges with communication, and threats to my health from illness and questionable food were top in my list. And while we have found all of these concerns to be well justified, it has been our constant struggles with transportation that has proven to be the greatest challenge of all. The greatest agonies we have faced have been the result of endless waits for buses, or, often worse, the bus rides themselves. These hardships didn´t really begin until we tried to leave Arica, Chile for Uyuni, Bolivia. We had to wait four days before we could catch a ride to our first stop in Bolivia, forcing us to ... read more
Well since heading back to La Paz, we jumped on a bus south, headed to Oruro, twas a three hour bus ride where Jord and I were constantly getting weird stares because we couldnt stop laughing to Eddy Murphy on my iPod, then "Standing Tall" came on and we gave a cheer to the Ennis brothers (stuntmen) who we found out were in the film. Arrived in Oruro where we hit up Celebrity Chef Don Roberto, who invited us to his parents hotel in Cochabamba, and mayhaps on our way back to Santa Cruz we will stop by. As Jords blog noted he was really an amazing guy. If I could find a computer with windows XP I could post the pictures of our meal, this guy brought us the most delicious lamb Ive ever had ... read more
On Wednesday morning at 8am Noel, the Irish lads and I commenced our three day trip into Bolivia, via the Southwestern Circuit. The trip included transport, all food and 2 nights accomodation. We checked out of Chile in San Pedro and then drove through the desert for an hour until we got to the Bolivian customs office. (Which country we were officialy in for the hour between checking out of Chile and into Bolivia we do not know!) The scenery was out of this world with the Andes and several volcanoes looming oin the distance. Once in Bolivia we had a simple breakfast of bread and Jam and then transferred our luggage from a minibus onto a 4X4. In our car with us were the Irish lads, a french couple and our Bolivian driver/chef/guide Severano. We ... read more
