La Paz, Bolivia From Potosi, we made our way to the capital La Paz. After arriving in La Paz we booked ourselves on a Mountain Bike trip down the " World´s most Dangerous Road." It is almost a 3000m down hill. What a blast!! We hired Trek Bikes with hydraulic brakes (complete with brake fluid). We were glad of the good brakes as the weather made the conditions a bit more difficult. It was brought home to us how dangerous the road was when we passed the spot where an Israeli had fallen over the edge a month before (apparently he was mucking around though), as well as countless shrines where various vehicles have fallen off over the years. Luckily there is now a new road for other traffic which is much safer. We had ... read more

Welcome back again bloggers, the last week or so has been fairly action packed so i have chosen a few highlights to keep this blog of mine ticking over. Having left Cusco, Peru and headed to Lake Titicaca on the Bolivian border a day after the rest of the lads but accompanied by Sarat, Laura and Ciara.....we were left fairly underwhelmed by the place. Sure, its beautiful and the Cathedral there is awesome for a small town, but other than that and possibly the worst meal i have ever paid for there was little else to see or do. That in mind, we headed back to La Paz, Bolivia in order to find some semi decent nightlife and to arrange some more adventure. So, we leave Copacabana on Lake Titicaca we hop on a bus ... read more

Finally, with only one weekend to go in La Paz, and with a little convincing from some people who were traveling through Bolivia, it was time to go down the World's Most Dangerous Road on bike. On Thursday night, I met up with two people from Ottawa, Nigel and Erin. Nigel is the son of a woman I took an Italian cooking class with in Ottawa last year. An interesting experience meeting her son in La Paz! Over beers at the bar at their hostel, they invited me to join them on the bike ride to Coroico so I took them up on their offer. Better to do this one with somebody rather than do it alone. Finally, Sunday morning came along and I was up early as we had to meet at a cafe ... read more

Death Road and La Paz South America » Bolivia » La Paz » World s Most Dangerous Road Coroico By Kon BrosMarch 10th 2007Scott and RobFrom Copacabana it was La Paz. We tackled the Death Road on our second day in La Paz and spent time kickin it with the A-Team and fellow Yukoners; there were eight of us in the same hostel! We were in La Paz for about a week before a trek into the Cordilla Real. That one's next.... read more

Our journey to La Paz was filled with excitement as we were finally stuck in the middle of a strike. We had been promised that Bolivia might be a bit difficult to travel in but as of yet our trusty guide hadn´t delivered. We took a night train from Uyuni leaving at 11 pm. We had to spend a bit of time in the train station and I nearly packed a little mangy looking dog into my backpack, it was a real scrappy looking thing with dreadlocks and just looked little and scared. Anyway after a long night train we arrived at another town to get a bus but there were only people calling CochabambAAAAAAA not La Paz so we were a little concerned. We found out there was a strike and we wouldn´t be ... read more

World’s most dangerous road…I’d seen photos and heard all about it, so it was a must do for me in La Paz. For those of you who don’t know, it has done enough to earn its stripes as the World’s most dangerous road. It’s hard to get absolute statistics, but on average, it is estimated 200 people die on this road every year (It was completed in 1935) The year 2003 was a particularly bad year, reporting the worst single accident of 85 Bolivians who died on a bus returning from a festival in La Paz. In 1994, 26 vehicles went over the edge. There have been 7 mountain bike deaths, the most recent one’s were 6 months before I did it, and 5 days after. The road is now not as dangerous as it ... read more

After our incredible mining tour I didn´t think that Bolivia could get any better. Ahh, once again I´ve managed to prove myself wrong! We did an overnight bus from Potosi to La Paz (conveninently saving having to pay for a night in a hostel) and arrived just in time to watch the sun rise over the city. La Paz is amazing - the highest capital city in the world located at over 3600m above sea level, it sure makes it hard to climb around the valley´s walls. The whole city is located in a bowl - with the central street running down the middle and the barrios extending all the way up and over all sides of the hills. The rising sun danced from one redbrick/mud house to the next until the whole city of over ... read more

After Potosi, we took the coldest bus EVER down to La Paz at 3600m above sea level. Home of the world´s most dangerous road. Naturally, we had to bike down it. Logical isn't it?? We arrived in La Paz nice and early, walked to our hostel, had a nap, then did a walking tour of the capital of Bolivia - courtesy of Lonely Planet! We found some great little streets and vendors with lots of cool trinkets. There's a street called Witches Alley that has everything from llama fetuses to healing stones - and everything in between. It was a sight to see that's for sure!! That evening we booked our trip for the next morning. A hair-raising 62 km bike ride down the precarious road (and 6 km uphill...man, tougher than you could imagine at ... read more

So the title pretty much says it all. Not sure if you´ve heard of death road before but it is, literally, death road. We got up fairly early in the am and took the bus for about an hour into the hills, and we were greated with a spectacular day. The tour set me back $40u.s. but was well worth it. The company supplied bikes, helmats, pants, coat, lunch, transportation and first-aid. The beginning was a little chilly but I adjusted quickly and it wasn´t long before I was sweating up the hills. We started at La Cumbre and the first 10kms was on pavement and mostly down hill it took us just about an hour to get to the start of the trail. Trail isn´t really the right word for it. It used to be ... read more
