hey all, Well, there´s a lot to get through so make a brew, pop a bottle of wine, light a cigar, or whatever else you fancy doing, settle in, and let´s begin. The last time I wrote anything of any use to anyone I was in La Paz, the day before the bike ride. So I'm going to carry on from there. 18th September - La Paz. La Paz is great. It´s great for many reasons. Partly it´s because it´s beautiful. Partly it´s because it´s really convenient (more ATMs than your average British city), and partly because it has a witches´market. Yes, a witches´market. Here can be found all manner of weirdness, the finest of which in my opinion were the dried llama foetuses, used apparently for luck when starting a journey or opening a business. ... read more

The vast majority of our time in La Paz seemed to be spent drifting round the city aimlessly not really knowing what we wanted to do. Although we were there for 4 days I can only recall walking through the witches market looking at llama foetuses and going to a couple of very small museums. The best one of these was a musical instrument museum that allowed you to play some of the instruments, which was good fun. It is no disrespect to La Paz but the highlight was undoubtedly leaving. This was due to our mode of transport out of town, mountain biking down the "most dangerous road in the world." I have put it in inverted commas as I don´t know who has decided this, but the number of stories we were told on ... read more

On Saturday we took on the Death Road and we survived! (we have a T-shirt to prove it). James and I, along with Ryan Pellett (a friend from NZ), Laura (a teacher at James' school), a guide and two other travellers biked down what has been labelled the 'world's most dangerous road' from La Cumbre (4640m in the Bolivian Andes) to Yolosa (1295m). There are approximately 20-100 deaths per year (the stats vary) on this road and apparently 2 cycling accidents per year... even two weeks ago there a bus full of 50 people went over the edge resulting in a tragedy. We learnt half way down that they have named particular corners after the nationality of a few cyclists who were going to fast around certain corners. This first part was nicely paved and two-laned... ... read more

The day was perfect. Clear blue sky. We met at the tour company in town and alter receiving our gear, full face helmet, surgical dust mask, reflective vest and over trousers we made our way up to La Cumbra. La Cumbra is the starting place of all this craziness. 4,700 meters high, its desolate, extremely cold and packed with scared tourists and adrenaline junkies. We all can’t wait to get going because it’s pretty damn inhospitable up here. We all hide behind the van to get away from the biting wind and listen to the safety briefing. Something about hand signals and braking is lost to me because James and I are goofing around…. Hey, we are amped. Our group is pretty multicultural. We have Uncle Olie, a Bolivian as the driver of our support car. ... read more

Against my initial better judgement Ian persuaded me the best way to get to Rurrenabaque, the town through which Bolivia accesses the Amazon, was by cycling the first stretch down officially the worlds most dangerous road - a road which had in the last two weeks alone claimed over 40 lives with two busses going over the edge. We booked with the agency based out of previous hotel we´d stayed in and once more were presented with forms essentially saying that if we died as a result of negligence of the guides it would be our fault, we recognised we were forfeiting considerable rights, etc etc. We signed. We were told to be back a seven the next morning, ¨Don´t be late¨ I gave the chap a condescending glance, ¨We´re British, we´re never late¨ Arriving at ... read more

Arriving at La Paz at 7am after the worst bus journey in the world isnt everyones idea of fun and it wasnt ours either, however we dusted ourselves down hailed a taxi and headed for a hostel listed in the Lonely PLanet. After a quick clean up in luke warm showers we headed down into the town searching for a mountain bike tour of The Worlds Most Dangerous Road for the following day. After convincing Pickles that he would survive and it was probably just a myth that it was that dangerous etc we booked up a tour for the 4 of us and a Kiwi guide. It was only then that I started to read a few articles about this so called road of death on The Internet and the fear soon set in. After ... read more

Throughout our travels through South America we have heard many stories of the world's most dangerous road in La Paz. The road is about 64km long - I'm not sure if you can really call it a road, mainly a small dirt/gravel track winding down a very steep mountain. It claims the lives of about 150 people a year and a record 350 a few years ago due to the single gravel track, 400m vertical drop and no barriers. This road simply isn't safe for any vehicle to travel up or down. So the first thing we did was arrange a mountain bike ride down this trecherous road. We decided to go with the highly recommended Gravity Downhill company not because their bikes were the best with excellent brakes but for the free t-shirt you get ... read more

lots of catching up 2 do with this diary as I cycled death road weeks ago, oops well heres what I can remember.... First off the day before I was so scared I spent 3 hours netting out and reading stories about it and then went to the pub and spoke to aout 20 different people and drank a bottle of wine and decided that I was brave enough 2 do it and ran to the office to book up with nikki, lachy and mick to cycle the worlds most dangerous road!!! I had loads of nightmares the night before I cycled the road and was happy to let everyone know that i was sooo scared!!! Loads of people have been killed on this road, mostly in buses or lorries and only a few cyclists!!!!!! I ... read more

Well, that definitely ranks as the most unbelievably, incredibly, ridiculously, stupefyingly, mind-numbingly brain-dead idiotic thing I´ve ever done in my life. And I´m sure I´ve done some pretty stoopid things before now. The Death Road. The world´s most dangerous road. Whatever you want to call it, it kind of suggests "Stay Away". However, there are numerous companies offering silly gringos the opportunity to throw themselves down it on a mountain bike for sh!ts and giggles. So, having met a nice young girl a few weeks in Peru, who´d done said activity with THE most well known and reputable company, fallen 30 metres down a cliff, scraped up all one arm and shoulder, and been unconscious for 2 days, you might be tempted to think "Stay Away". Hmmm. Somehow, instead, we thought "Let´s save $20 dollars by ... read more
