ok so after the most hurrendous bus journey from uyuni we arrived in la paz the capital of bolivia and the highest capital city in the world, let me tell you about the bus though 1st. It was deffinatly not the tourist gringo bus it was a shed on wheels full of locals crammed in the isles with some annoying drunken singing person playing the guitar and howling bolivian songs for 13 hours! (the singing at 1st was good but at 5 in the morning when your knackered squashed and have been shaken to death on the bumpies dirt track ever somehow the singing isnt quite as appealing) anyway enough about that.....mum, dad you might want to stop reading at this point.... Theres something called the death road in bolivia which runs from la paz to ... read more

Driving into La Paz was like driving into vehicle mayhem. Something noticeably consistent about South America is they have no road rules and a licence to drive is not required! A very smoggy city with 1.4mil Bolivians on to the roads all at once, whether by vehicle or foot, they are begging, selling, tooting horns at one another, whistling...it was quite a change from Lake Titicaca and the mountains where we’d been in isolation for the last 2 weeks. La Paz is known as the highest capitol city in the world, the city itself sits comfortably at 3600m in the middle of what looks like a canyon, with snow-capped mountains circulating the cities perimeter. A city with pretty views from a far and bustling with people, the nightlife is pumping and everything is as cheap as ... read more

On the 11th we took the Gravity Mountain Biking Support Vehicle up to La Cumbre in the Andes and took a narrow road all the way own to Coroico where we spent the night. The downhill trip took about 4 hours and was a great time. The road is littered with the buses and cars that have gone off over the years. Our group of 10 or so made it down without incident. We ate lunch with everyone and played with a baby spider monkey while a bunch of squirrel monkeys repeatedly attacked a German guy. We were going to head to Rurrenabaque in the Amazon but didn't have enough money and there were no ATMs so we headed back to La Paz.... read more

So... after the fun of the fair that was Lake Titicaca, we got another bus to a place called Copacobana, although due to it chucking it down with rain, we decided to stay on the bus, and head for our next destination La Paz! Our first land border crossing passed without incedent, as we headed into Bolivia... although having to get out the bus, and cross a large river on a boat, watching the bus cross the river on another boat made us laff... no photos though, sorry! Got to La Paz, seemed like a cool place, although we did not get to see too much of it in the couple of days we were there... checked into Hostel Austria, nice clean rooms, not much else... although lovely hot showers, which we hear is a bit ... read more

Here we are in La Paz waiting for a plane to Rurranabaque which has thus far been cancelled on a number of occasions due to mystery Bolivian reasons. La Paz is the highest capital city in the world and the altitude is getting frankly tiresome as every step is a chore and everyting in this city is bloody uphill. That is, of course, apart from the most dangerous road in the world. Mind you that is obviously uphill in one direction so I ll shut up! One of the fun activities here is to get on a bike and hare down this narrow road and hopefully live to tell the tale. Wanting to make sure I looked my best when I fell off my bike I was keen to get a haircut so we head to ... read more

Finally left Puno!! The guy at hotel Monterrey was all rush to get us to the bus station, we paid 20USD each for a directo bus to La Paz and it was only when we were an hour or so into our journey realised that the bus ticket was for Copacabana...so´s it looked like we were ripped off or there was some kind of break down in communication......so stayed in Copacabana for the night in La Mirador Hotel, 5.00USD each and it was lovely, right on the lake, and the views of sunset were just spectacular(must start staying in hostels..not only because its that bit cheaper but you meet way more people than staying in hotels and plus if I keep spending the way I am I’ll be home next month!!! Copacabana...what a lovely little town...esp. ... read more

Well after the glories of the football match and sampling some highly dubious falafel in downtown La Paz the next day was given over to a fill examination of the city. During the fun packed day myself and Claire sampled the following delights.. Museum of Coco. Totally brilluant little museo and very much worth the visit. Not very much in the way of things to look at but the small place has a fantastic 47 page booklet that lets you show yourself around and learn all you could ever wish to know about the humble coco leaf. Basically after an hour or so the main conclusion reached is that traditional uses for coco=good, making of cocaine=bad (i quite agree, mate de coco is jolly tasty, while i´ve only ever seen idiots using the other). Also it ... read more

While Becky decided to do some shopping in La Paz, a few of us decided to tackle the most dangerous road in the world on a mountain bike. We all met in reception at 7:30am, a little unsure as to what to expect. We has been told that this road has the most deaths per km than any other road in the world. Last year 230 died on the road but only three were cyclist which made us feel slightly better. As we all met, one member of our group pointed out that today was Friday 13th!!!! Great!!!! We were picked up, taken for some breakfast and then driven 1 hour outside La Paz to start. When we arrived we were given waterproof clothing, a helmet, gloves and a mountain bike. We all tried our bikes ... read more

Okay Everyone, we've done quite a bit since are last entry, so here is a quick update for you. After Macchu Picchu, we spent a couple of days in Arequipa, a beautiful colonial town in Peru. From here we did a three day trek in the Colca Canyon (twice as deep as the Grand Canyon and the second deepest in the world). Fantastic scenery though one of the highlights saw our guide getting stung on the lip by a scorpion. You´ve never seen two people with less idea of what to do. The only help and assistance we could give was to confirm to him that scorpions were, indeed, very dangerous and he was right to start panicking. He was going absolutely bananas. The nearest town was a 4 hour trek back up and it was ... read more
