Hola todos ! I wanted to update you on the weeks since New Years as I only wrote about the Inca trail in the last blog. The Intrepid tour started in Lima on Dec 28 with 11 other persons (6 from Australia, 1 Kiwi, 2 English, 1 Dutch and 1 Russian). We started with two days in the Peruvian Rainforest where I saw some more monkeys and enjoyd a very luxorious lodge (we even had a swimming pool !). The river was much larger than in Ecuador, so a different Amazonian experience this time. For New Years Eve we had all moved on to the beautiful city of Cusco (where Claire, our English tour guide, lives). We celebrated midnight at her bar The Muse, overlooking the city (so we could see some fireworks from the big ... read more

Well, it took me two months to finally loose something. Unfortunately it happened to be my Ipod, which I left on the bus from Copacabana to La Paz. Bummer…. After arriving in La Paz I checked into a really cool hostel called the Adventure Brew Hostel. It is the highest micro brewery in the world, and I must say it is pretty good stuff - especially after drinking all this South American beer. At the hostel I meet up with the Irish girls from Copacabana and the next day we set off to book a mountain bike trip down the world’s most dangerous road and also check out if it was worth going into the Jungle. Well it seems that wet season in the jungle just isn’t worth doing so we decided to skip the mozzies ... read more

Hello, While I was in Bolivia I was told I had to do a bike trip down the worlds deadliest road or better named the "Death Road". So who was I to turn down such an opportunity?? I had met up with a few people on the Islands of Lake Titicaca and continued to travel with them to Bolivia. the three of us did the ride, Thomas is from OZ and Caz is from England. A photo CD was included in the tour which made it nice so you didnt have to bring a camera. I should tell you that it was a very fast pace ride you drop from 4600m (13800 ft) to 1300m (3900 ft) in 64km. And I will admit I did fall but it not too bad I was one of 5 ... read more

Well gang, hope you all had a peaceful and tranquil christmas day....mine was anything but!! After I wrote the last travel blog, Ben, Brad, Bill and I decided we were bored and would have a couple of pre group meal "quiet" drinks. Well needless to say it was happy hour 2 for 1 on rum and cokes. We turned up late for the group meal a little worse for wear. When our food arrived i stuffed half of the green beans in my gob turned to Ben and said "do I have something in my teeth?", ala Jim Carrey in Ace Ventura. Well he absolutely pissed himself, then i got the giggles and we couldnt stop'laughing for the whole meal, whilst everyone else just looked at us bewildered. Thats about as far as my memory goes ... read more

Today was one of the reasons we wanted to stay in La Paz and that was to mountain bike down the Worlds Most Dangerous Road. We spent a long time researching companies to go with and Gravity Assisted Mountain Biking was a clear winner. All the reviews were great and the equipment was the best. You don't exactly want anything less when you are cycling down the WMDR! An early start! As always on this trip, the excursions start early, so it was a 7am start at a café down beside the Gravity office. Gravity has now decided to class December as the “rainy season” therefore more risks are involved and they have adapted their packages. So we were a smaller group of only 8 and we had 3 guides which was great. It was time ... read more

Week 6 La Paz is the highest capital city of the world at 3600m lying at the bottom of a steep canyon and ringed by snow peaked mountains. Our Hotel Continental was in the heart of the city along a road lined with bowler-hatted women selling a variety of clothes and food stuffs. In trying to get our bearings the first day we managed to get lost in the maze of bustling street markets. That night we visited a popular bar called Ram Jam - an energetic throbbing place clearly aimed at gringos with an oxygen bar upstairs where you could intoxicate yourself with O2! The following day, after a healthy breakfast in a cafe aptly named 100% Natural, we visited the coca museum to learn more about this famous plant that has shaped much of ... read more

The moment I had been waiting for arrived! Mountain biking down the world´s most dangerous road in Bolivia is one of the things I have been looking forward to most on this trip. Safe in the knowledge that Kate would keep her promise to her parents not to go, I was released from any possible escorting duties, and I could go at whatever pace I was comfortable at (...fast). We met up in Cafe La Teraza in La Paz at 7.30am and hopped on the bus for a quick 1 hour trip to the top of the mountain, where we were kitted out with our equiptment and bikes. The reason I chose to go with Gravity tours was the quality of their bikes; I was on a $2,500 Kona full-suspension downhill bike. With six inches of ... read more

The Worlds Most Dangerous Road!! Rock on!! Hey, I´ve got an idea, lets mountain bike down it as fast we can!! This is officially the worlds most dangerous road, or at least used to be before they built a new one (which is also pretty bad and is falling apart only a few years after completion…). Apparently at the height of it´s infamy it averaged (more or less) around 400 deaths per year and it has a really interesting history for other reasons as well (like one of Nazi Germanys nastiest pieces of work fleeing to live on the road to carry on with attrocities against the locals on American sponsorship!). Just another one of Bolivia’s long list of Worlds best/highest/most etc etc… The ride starts in the snow capped mountains and descends 3600m over 65km ... read more

Yesterday I went mountain biking down the world´s most dangerous road, a.k.a death road, and survived. I didn´t want to let anyone know in advance, because there´s no need to worry for nothing. Anyway, I had a great time, and I got a nice t-shirt at the end. The road is 67 km long, 60 of which are downhill. The first 22 km are paved, and it becomes a dirt road after that. To be honest, since a new road opened about a year ago, there´s almost no traffic anymore on the unpaved part of the road, so it´s much safer now, although we did pass lots of crosses and other markers that indicate where people have died. I went with the best company here, Gravity Assisted Mountain Biking, and because it´s more expensive, there were ... read more

18/11/07 Not one of the most sensible things I´ve done but it just had to be done! The worlds most dangerous road had been calling ever since we got to South America and how cool was the ride. We went with Gravity Tour Company which is one of the best for safety and equipment (safety first). The road is approx 64km long and in places is only 3.2m wide. 11 cyclists have been killed riding it but its got its name from the number of vehicle accidents with one of the worst accidents where 120 locals were killed when there (drunk) driver went over the edge after a football match. There are plenty more stories like that and plenty of crosses along the road as a reminder. The first 22km were on asphalt so pretty easy ... read more
