Hello People, We woke up at 6am in the hostel in Puno. Our taxi arrived at 6.15am, which we had pre-booked the night before. We got dropped off at the bus terminal where we had a coach to La Paz (direct across the boarder to Bolivia). The journey was suppose to take 7 hours but was closer to 10 in total! It was about 2 hours to the boarder of Bolivia, which was a very scenic journey around Lake Titicaca. The boarder was very small, and was so easy compared to memories of the hectic Thai-Cambodia boarder. After we had our passports stamped on both sides, the journey continued for another hour to Copacabana. We were told to get off the bus for 1h30 as we had to change buses, have lunch and explore the town. ... read more

There is no doubt about it. This definitely is a party hostel, meaning that all of the social scene revolves around this enclosed Irish pub. And it is going strong at all hours of the day, especially now that it is the weekend and there is sport on all day. It certainly is a younger crowd, but that doesn't bother me. I had big nights last night and Friday. Although, I have a feeling that the nights continue long after I fall asleep in my bunk. What´s crazy about all this is that when you wake up to have breakfast it is held in the bar. And there having breakfast with you are all the faces from last night's crowd. It is all a little surreal, but there is a sense of camaraderie about it. I ... read more

Today was the first day I have felt back to my traveler self. I checked out of my luxury hotel this morning and wandered into the sunny La Paz street and hopped into a taxi. The driver knew of my hostel and we were away. It was an easy run and I am now offcially checked into my first ever ¨party hostel¨. Whatever that means. They do have a full scale irish pub on the second floor. When I first got there around noon I went to the bar to buy some bottles of water because the tap water in La Paz is undrinkable. As I approached it sounded like a rave was going on inside. At the bar there were a few scurrilous fellow already, still?, drunk. That is not what made me feel like ... read more

My current stumblings around La Paz seem to mirror my stumblings in life. It is true what they say that the one person you can never get away from is yourself. I feel somewhat better today, more breath, but also more aware of a slight headache. I took a much needed walk today up Avenida Arce to the Plaza del Estudiante. It was nice to blow some of the early trip trepidation away. Despite all the warnings I have been to South America before, five times actually. I have hopped on the back of motorbike taxis in Cartagena. I have wandered through dimly lit streets in Lapa at night looking for the dodgy bits. I have walked drunk blithely through a late Cali night. I have been stranded unconcerned after a futbol match in the menacing ... read more

It is all how I envisioned. Here I am in La Paz ensconced in my luxurious hotel bed gazing out at Illimani, the soul filled mountain that stands sentry over this city. The plan is to spend the whole day lounging and pondering as I adjust to the ridiculously high altitude of La Paz. I can already feel some of its effects. Drawing in big yawning breaths feel like a decadent exercise and mind feels delightfully foggy and compressed. It is hard to tell if the lethargy I am feeling is from the altitude, the overnight flight I have just taken, or if it is just the continuation of my normal state of being. I have been drinking a lot of mate de coca, which you can probably guess is tea made from coca leaves. It ... read more

We spent our last day in San Pedro eating a late breakfast in the town square watching a colourful parade go by. Did some shopping in the afternoon for a sun hat and knitted leg warmers - strange combination I know but essential! The cute little town of San Pedro is teaming with interesting shops. We left on the night bus at 8pm and paired up with a lovely Spanish couple who were sat behind us on the bus. At Arica next morning we were going separate ways but they seemed reluctant to leave us as we couldn't speak the lingo but I assured them we'd be fine. I soon found the office for the bus to La Paz, established the time of departure and the duration, chose seats and found out if food would be ... read more

The highest capital in the world, at around 3650 metres, La Paz kept me breathless, and I'm not just talking the gorgeous views! We could appreciate these almost immediately, as our driveer stopped at a viewpoint looking over the city as we left the airport where we got the most spectacular views over the city. The city is built in a valley, with red brick houses clinging to the hillsides all around us. We liked it almost immediately. Our hotel was located right in the centre of the city, next to San Francisco church. We couldn't have hoped for a better base, as we were able to wander around the city and explore the local markets and the nooks and crannies in the the old city. After our trip down Death Road, we booked ourselves in ... read more

La Paz, one of the highest located cities in the world lies at a dazzling 3650 meters altitude. A city with over 1 million people nestled between mountains it literally takes your breath away when you enter the city. I have now been a while in the 4000 meter altitude region, but the smog from all the cars makes it even harder to breath. Nevertheless it is a beautiful city with heaps of things to do. After I arrived in La Paz and settled into my hostel I was on a mission to find a good dentist. After all that was why I was here so quickly in the first place. Though it was Sunday and everything was closed. So I went to a couple of hostels and asked of whom they would recommend and most ... read more

Hola Amigos... “Potosí! Potosí! Salimos a las una” the lady shouted... We hopped on board for a four hour bus ride to Potosí, the highest city in the world (allegedly) and a Unesco World Heritage Site. At 4070 metres above sea level, we huffed and puffed as we explored the lovely (and hilly) streets of this famous city. Little did we know that this city is not only famous for its elevation, but also its role in the history of the world‘s currency. The world’s first international coin was minted in silver here in Potosí. Our guide in The Casa Nacional de la Moneda gave us a very informative tour on the history of the mint and showed us some pretty remarkable pieces of wooden machinery from the 1700’s. The surrounding hills have one of the ... read more

After a period of not great internet and no patience to write posts, its time to catch up again. We arrived in La Paz on the 16th of April, landing at El Alto airport at an altitude of 4000m. When building the airport they needed to make the tarmac significantly longer than most airports to give planes enough space to gain speed for take-off. All due to the high altitude. La Paz itself is in a small bowl-shaped valley at around 3600m. We spent 2 days here, most of the time we just walked around the city allowing ourselves to be overwhelmed by the business, all the markets and people in colorful clothing. Except for the small center, the houses in the city are only a few stories high and don't look like they will last ... read more
