Hola amigos! Bolivia, bolivia ... Where do I start? One minute I'm loving it, the next I'm praying for dear life! It began with a 17 hour bus journey from Cusco overnight. Now I'd be one who considers the four hour round trip from Wexford to Dublin long but I honestly didn't blink an eye for the La Paz trip. The bus was unreal with reclining seats similar to first class on an aeroplane and blankets and tea was handed out to anyone who wanted them. 34 of the journey was gone before I even woke up! When we did get to LP, the buss driver conviently (for him) dropped us in the middle of nowhere and the place was complete bedlam with traffic chockablock, protests or demonstrations every 2nd street + not a fellow tourist ... read more

We drove around the shores of Lake Titicaca to enter Bolivia. At 3800m, the world's highest navigable lake is blue and serene. The tourist bus drops the influx at the first significant town of Copacabana. The streets closest to the waters edge are dedicated to hotels, hostels, restaurants and woolly jumpers. 'It's nothing but a tourist trap' said some travellers, unaware that they would find a Cathedral dating back to 1619 just a few blocks further North. The first hotel we tried offered a nice room with bathroom, cable TV and a panoramic view of the lake for £8 per night. 'This is great' we thought. Bolivia is known as the cheapest country in South America and at these prices our budget would not be stretched. Sadly it was an anomaly, we never found such a ... read more

Our Arrival FROM COPACABANA We arrived from Copacbana at 10:45am. The bus dropped us off in a car park opposite a cemetery on Avenue Baptista on the West side of the City. We were next heading to Rurrenabaque so we headed over to the bus terminals over in Villa Fatima. To do this we caught a micro from by the cemetery which had Villa Fatima on the front. There were lots of micros heading past to different destinations. Buses to Rurrenabaque leave from 2 separate offices in the Villa Fatima district, one is next to an old petrol station. We asked the driver to stop at 'El Ex-Surtidor' and he dropped us next to the office for Flota Yunguena. We caught the micro at 10:50am and arrived in Villa Fatima at 11:25am. Normal price for a ... read more

I'm still alive, finally got enough reliable wifi for me to upload some blogs! So this morning I woke up and had a lovely cold shower! (Lasts nights shower was hot though so very unpredictable). Although I'm not sure which is worse, a cold shower or a shower that initially comes out with brown water (I had to change rooms the second night). Anyway we went walking around the town today, we saw the more modern part of La Paz which had a few nice buildings. We also saw the most amazing cathedral I've ever seen! I think it was called the San Francisco cathedral. We weren't allowed to take pictures but some of the inside was covered in black gold with colourful statues everywhere. There was also a parade that went on all day but ... read more

This morning I woke up feeling nauseous, I'm not sure if I ate something weird or if it's due to the new altitude tablets I'm taking, anyway I'm still feeling slightly nauseous, but it could be because now I'm in a higher altitude. Anyway I said goodbye to my awesome hotel and caught a taxi to the airport where I caught a flight to La Paz in Bolivia. I was expecting it to be a big bustling city like Lima, clearly I hadn't researched it enough as when I was landing all I could see were huts and old run down brick buildings. I took a taxi to what I thought was a hotel (actually a hostel) where I met up with Rachel and Kristy, and suddenly realised that this was a lot different to what ... read more

Our night bus from Uyuni was uneventful and we arrived into La Paz just after six in the morning. We took a taxi to our B&B and were lucky enough to get our room straight away. There was another kiwi couple staying at our B&B so we all decided to head out to one of the downtown walking tours. Unfortunately when we arrived at the meeting place there was no guide so we left to explore La Paz on our own. About 15 minutes later we bumped into another guide running a walking tour to El Alto so we decided to join him for his tour. El Alto is the city above La Paz, traditionally it is where the people from the countryside settle. In El Alto we visited the witches market where you can buy ... read more

They are everywhere in La Paz. Bowler-hatted women with wide layered skirts and yards of petticoats. A strange look. A fashion adopted from the colonists who used their own Spanish style to separate themselves from the indigenous. But the Aymara took it, and made it their own, and centuries after the Spanish left, flounced skirts (known as a pollera) and fringed shawls continue to be 'de riguer' among native women. It's a striking look. Matronly. Not at all sexy. But maybe Aymara men feel differently. All those petticoats (centros), emphasise the hips, and suggest that the women will be good child-bearers. And children are important to the Aymara; families are large, each child, it's reasoned, a source of eventual income. The look seems to be all about bulk. As many as twenty polleras and centros can ... read more
