The combination of a cold and altitude mean I didn’t sleep well and have a pounding headache. When we arrived in La Paz, some of my toiletries had leaked, the rest had inflated to almost bursting point. That’s pretty much how my head feels. After breakfast, the old man sets off to explore the city and I take some painkillers and return to bed to regroup. By midday I’m ready, the old man is recalled from his cable car extravaganza and we head for old La Paz. The secret is to do everything slowly, which incidentally I’m rather good at. We start at the 18th century Church of San Francisco, where we take a guided tour which includes the cloisters, the church, then up a tiny, dark staircase onto the roof. Just as I poke my ... read more

Today, the high altitude portion of our trip begins. I’m not really looking forward to it - I’m not sure I’m designed for altitude. To make matters worse, I have a stinking cold. We reach the airport 2 hours before our flight. The airline recommends a minimum of 3, which seems excessive in the middle of the night. But we’ve left it very tight. After check in comes immigration. The queue is enormous and it takes 30 minutes to almost reach the front. Then the computers crash and what little action there was grinds to a halt. We finally reach our gate 8 minutes before boarding commences. We are flying to La Paz. The airport is 4080 metres above sea level. It’s craziness. I wouldn’t want to live 4080 metres from the sea horizontally, let alone ... read more

Up earlier than expected this morning considering there was no deadline for a change. However Daisy went to shower first and it took about 15 minutes for the water to get warm enough and not the most volume of water either. A bit disappointing for such a nice looking hotel. Finally we got ourselves down for breakfast around 8:45 and after that I asked at the desk if they had any suggestions for just one day in La Paz and he offered a taxi to drive us around to the main spots including the Valle de la Lunar (Valley of the Moon) which is 13kms out of the city centre for 800BOB (Bolivian Bolivianos) which is $AU80. It would be much cheaper to go to each spot by taxi but this was so much more convenient ... read more

Incredibly tired after a flight, our overnight bus and 2 more flights. Arrived in La Paz & a guide took us to a great place for lunch. Then a wander around the shops selling Alpaca so that we can keep warm in the freezing places ahead. Then I got hit with the altitude, poor boy had to go to bed early. Briefly met the new group a good mix of Scots, English, Swiss a Kiwi and a German. Next day feeling a little better & not hearing great things about the hotel breakfast we decided to spoil ourselves & return to cafe de Munro for breakfast. We will be there again when we get back to la Paz in a weeks time. We walked through the markets to the cathedral, in front of which we watched ... read more

There's something not right about going from the tranquil and scenic Lake Titicaca to a busy, smelly and big city of La Paz. It feels that it should have been the other way around! Nonetheless, we didn't want to stick around La Paz for more than two nights, for us, large cities aren't our favourite as there are better things to see and do outside of them. We stayed at a hostel (the adventure brew hostel) which was a good place to meet people and with events happening most nights. We found ourselves having a bit of a go at karaoke on the fist night (somehow the footage is missing!) and played a lot of pool and table tennis. It also had a great BBQ ip on the rooftop on our final night there. One thing ... read more

La Paz: Witches, Wrestling, and The World's Most Dangerous Road (03/07/2018- 07/07/2018 and 11/07/2018 - 12/07/2018) Not everyone loves La Paz. A sensory overload: a complete chaotic feast for the eyes and ears. Ironically, 'La Paz' translates as 'the peace'. Quite far from it, my friends! La Paz is the World’s highest capital ‎(3,640m) and a city that willl challenge your senses like nowhere else. Constant honking streams of traffic... biazarre sights and smells... streets piled with rubble... endless, bustling markets... wrinkled and toothless, traditionally dressed locals... La Paz was weirdly charming. It reminded me of India, actually. With it's poor infrastructure, La Paz is a clusterfuck of architecture in the city centre, with rows and rows of unfinished terra... read more

Made it to La Paz a couple of days ago after 17 or so hours of flying and two layover (1st in Fort Lauderdale, 2nd in Lima, Peru). It was colder than expected (33F at night) and the altitude is still bothering me. Getting from the airport to my hostel was an adventure itself. La Paz's terrain is not ideal for walking. I can see why the country invested in cable cars. These cable cars are amazing! Mi Telerifico, is what the locals referred to the cable car as. You can pretty much get to anywhere within the city. I was very timid stepping onto the cable car. Every intersection of the cable car cause a slight drop that sent my stomach up to my neck. After a couple of hours, I finally made it to ... read more

David here... The journey from Coroico to La Paz took a couple of hours, but unlike the journey there it was misty and rainy so we couldn't see much of the view. We arrived back at Terminal Provisional Minas in Villa Fatima and decided not to jump into the first taxi, but to see what mini-vans passed by. Sure enough, after a couple of minutes a van pulled up with San Francisco listed on the front. We hopped in and after 30 minutes or so we were outside of Iglesia de San Francisco. The journey cost us 4Bs in total (50p), a good saving over a taxi. We were staying up the hill behind the Iglesia at Hotel Saganarga, right in the heart of the centre of the city. The hotel lobby was modern but the ... read more
