Somehow I have got into the habit of arranging things at the last minute while I am travelling. The day before leaving San Francisco I booked two weeks of Spanish lessons in Sucre, Bolivia, which is why I ended up flying from San Francisco to Miami to La Paz to Santa Cruz one day on my RTW ticket, an overnight stay in Santa Cruz, then a lastminute purchase of a flight from Santa Cruz to Sucre via Cochabamba and La Paz! Luckily,my school had arranged for me to stay in a family home so that I could immerse myself in the Bolivian way of life and the language and so I was grateful when Milton and Silvia met me at the small airport in Sucre after my round-about air tour. Sucre is a delightful old university town; founded in 1538, it has retained much of its colonial charm thanks to numerous plazas surrounded by grand building painted in their original colonial white. It’s no surprise that the city was chosen as Bolivia’s constitutional capital. On my first afternoon in Sucre I jumped on the aptly named dino-bus, which ferries groups of tourists to a nearby archaeological site/quarry in a mock safari type vehicle. The site was created in the Cretaceous Period when a big swamp was frequented by huge numbers of dinosaurs whose muddy footprints were preserved, then fossilized in the soft algae ridden mud. The upshot of all this was an 85m high cliff covered with footprints of such famous dinosaurs as Velocoraptor and Brontosaurus; seeing the footprints of reptiles so long extinct was very ... read more

First of all, THANK YOU to all of you lovely people who got in touch to say Happy Birthday to me on the 7th. Tom promised me a 3 day birthday celebration (possibly because our English pounds go three times as far here) so here´s what we got up to. Tuesday, 6 June After a very bumpy overnight bus journey we descended into Bolivia´s official capital city, Sucre. At a lower altitude than La Paz, we noticed the warmer climate as soon as we stepped off the bus and eager to soak up the sun began peeling off the layers. After T gave me orders to choose a hotel out of the "Expensive" list, I of course plumped for a four star hotel with a great view from our bedroom window and a pool, which we ... read more

Sucre, the constitutional capital of Bolivia- is a beautiful city, surrounded by mountains, european styled houses and cobbled stoned side streets. travelling in our group of six mario (australia), alex (england), helen(england), rachael (Florida,US), Lacy(US) and Pierce(england)- we hire taxis from Potosi to Sucre and arrive at 9:30pm. our taxi arrived a half hour earlier- it seems he thought that it was a rally race, or that the coccaine police were behind him!! our reservations had been cancelled for some reason, and we were left wondering the streets tryin to find a hostel- finally found one next to the awakening stench of garbage and vomit- Hostel Charcas. first thing in the morning, we made a move to Sucre backpacker hostel. a white washed spanish style hostel, with curved arches and colourful plants. too bad about the ... read more

Christ where to begin?? Sucre was back in May, about 26th more or less... I was travelling with Henrique and Leo, we´d just started travelling together and things were good. After spending a night in Uyuni after the salt flats tour I went with Leeanne and Sue to Sucre, passing Potosi and spending a few hours there. Arriving in Sucre I decided to find a cheaper hotel than the one Leeanne and Sue decided on and so I went with a Welsh guy called Ben to find a room. The next day Henrique and Leo arrived- it was some national holiday there and Sucre was full of celebrations. We saw the much-loved president Eva Morales and that was great to see how many people were so fond of him (back home I think people would be ... read more

Hola, Well I arrived in Sucre after an overnight bus from La Paz early Sunday morning. This was a Bus Cama, translating to "Bed Bus" which was a first for me and was quite simiply the best experience I have ever had on a bus. The bus was equipped with two sets of fron wheels, which made me think it was in reverse when I saw it delicately maneuver into the loading bay meant for a bus half its size. Climbing aboard you found double wide seats with footrests (sadly too short for gringo legs...), blankets, and enermous windows like I have never seen before. It was strange to be in this luxurious goliath, my eyes peering over the slums as we headed out of the city. The ride took us through some very flat, very ... read more

We are still in Sucre, with Mauricio´s family. We have been having a great time sight seeing and enjoying the great food and celebrations. May 25 is the anniversary celebration of the foundation of Sucre. There have been huge parades in the streets, outdoor concerts and lots of other great activities. Yesterday we went for a ¨Dino Tour¨, Bolivia has great dinosaur tracks that were discovered when a company was excavating some land. They are amazing. The thing is that here in Bolivia you can go right up and touch the tracks. We have lots of cool pictures! In addition, we even found fern fossils and salt deposits that we took as treasures... we could have never done that in the US. Anyway, then we visited a Franciscan monastary that dates back to the 1700s, the ... read more

Arrive in Sucre at 8pm and thought I would do another one day all the sights in order to meet friends in La Paz on Friday, but when we arrive I hear there is a festival the next day and everything is shut! So check into the only hostel with space in the centre of town. More like a hotel as I have my own room and bathroom and cable tv! Have quick dinner then watch tv in bed. Check out and email my mates to find they are getting to la paz on saturday so quickly check back in for another night here. The city is heaving with people and parades and at 10am I see the president! I had forgotten this was the real capital of bolivia so he would come here for independance ... read more

We have spent the last two days helping get ready for the big event, Paola´s Wedding. It has been great fun to be able to prepare with Mauricio´s family for the big event. We have made flowers, prepared favors, transformed baskets and helped with the food preparations. Mauricio has several great aunts that are just like my grandmother. They are great fun to be around and love to talk about Bolivia. We will have more to report after the wedding but we are very much enjoying our time in Sucre so far. Family has come from all over Bolivia for the big day. Tomorrow morning all of us ladies will get our hair done at the salon. That´s all for now folks. We will have more travel adventures later. Love, Jessica and Mauricio... read more
