From the last time we have showed you the most amazing part of Bolivia, the Salar de Uyuni, lagunas, all landscapes that we have visited with a jeep tour from Tupiza. Now we are still in Bolivia, we have seen some cities, Potosi, Sucre (with the market of Tarrabuco) and arrived to Santa Cruz. This last one is not really a great place, near the jungle and with a very humid climate, but the reason to be here is to catch a flight to Brasil. Sucre is the OTHER capital of Bolivia, but of course no one except the sucreños actually hold any kind of significance to this. They actually hold quite a lot of significance to it, and never suggest that Sucre, without government buildings, at a dead-end part of Bolivia, in a small colonial town, maybe doesn´t deserve the title of world capital if you plan on your taxi driver taking you to your destination without a severe lecture. But nonetheless it´s something cool to store away in your memory bank of random world trivia. We got to Sucre from Potosí, by colectivo (shared taxi). The system for colectivos is that they wait until they´re full and then leave. There are a lot of them, so anybody that looks remotely like thinking of going to Sucre is pounced upon. ... read more

Well, we have moved quickly across Bolivia in the last few days. Saturday in Potosi we did our mine tour, and most of you have read Jords blog to hear about the nightmare but I figured I´d post a few pictures and share my insights on the matter as well. The tour started with everyone gearing up in plastic jackets, coverall pants, gum boots, hard hats and head lamps (powered by a really heavy battery on your back). We went to the miners market and got some Coca leaves and explosives. Things got a lot better real fast! Coca leaves are what they make cocaine out of, although chewing them is basically just like a caffeine rush combined with chewing tobacco, Gav & the Beak would love it, not sure if we can get some across ... read more

The bus we took from La Paz was heavily over booked which resulted in those who booked/arrived late having to sit and sleep in the aisle. Fortunately for us we arrived early (for once) and settled into our assigned seats for the overnight 14 hour journey. The driver's assistant had a penchant for very loud, violent films and en route to Sucre, he played three, all at 'old people´s' volume! seemingly unaware of the passengers disinterest and discomfort. The 20 minutes of white noise that followed each film was particulary mind-numbing and nearly drove us to dispair. All S.American bus journeys we have experienced so far end up taking much longer than planned and this was no exception. Some 18 hours later we bumbled into Sucre. Unfortunatley with this wedding in Chile in a few weeks I have run myself short of time. But I couldn´t leave Bolivia without seeing Sucre. Sucre is probably the prettiest city in Bolivia. I hear it is very much like Santa Cruz, but unfortunately I have had to give that a miss too. It is (the town centre anyway) is very colonial and still painted it´s orginal white. It is very tranqual after La Paz, and I am pleased I came up for the weekend. So I only have two days to see Sucre. And the stink thing is that one of those days is a sunday, and everything is closed, so really only have one day.
