Ok, so the title is going to be half accurate for this blog. The pictures you get to see are thanks to the photographic talents of Kate and the miracles of the interwebnet-thingy. Hence the pictures littered through the blog are of the many hilarious and important team building parties that the Hippo crew took part in over the last few weeks. Linked to gardening they are not, but the rest of my blog will be. Amoung the highlights of the pictures is the myself and the claire wrestling over the right to look most stupid, a harmonious balcony choir serenading (rather savagely) the fellow hippo lodge inhabitants and claires foray into the world of dreadlocks (this world is still a reality too). Otherwise, life plods on. My time last week was taken up with as ... read more

I decided yesterday to take a day and go explore Queenstown, and since it's only an hour out of Wanaka, it could be a day trip. Instead of taking the nice leisurely way around some of the ranges, I thought I could cut some time off the journey and take the range pass way. It was pretty hair raising at times. I mean, only if you don't think about falling off the road due to no guard rails. If I could do anything, I would run for government here, and have my cause go towards putting guard rails up here in this lovely country. After that, I went to a lovely little town called Arrowtown. It (back in the day) was used as a goldmining town. It's quite quant, and they have lovely mining houses that ... read more

Hello there everyone! Finally a message from Claire, and to reward you all greatly it's going to be mostly pictures as i know how much you all miss our ugly mugs..... First to answer Uncle Denis, a previously unknown blog reader, yes you can be a little smug about the weather as it is pretty cold here and as been raining quite a lot. We had some snow up on the mountains last week which was very pretty but that has been rained away now. As i type it has just started bucketing it down! So enjoy your spring sunshine over there. As for regrets on the car, well with the joys of hindsight firmly under our belts maybe things would have been done differently. The main reason for getting the car was to have a ... read more

Part 20 April 10 Queenstown, New Zealand Well, we have been in New Zealand for a week and just now I have a chance to write for the first time. So, apparently, we have been busy since we got here. (In fact, I think we have confirmed throughout this trip that our personalities don't exactly lend themselves to loads of down time or just lazing around relaxing.) New Zealand is a pretty easy place to be busy in, as there is much to do and the cooler temperatures don't sap one's energy like the heat and humidity of the tropics. But our schedule has been driven largely by the plans to meet my parents in Queenstown 6 days after we arrived in NZ. This gave us 36 hours from when we left the airport (which took ... read more

Hi folks, happy easter and welcome to a late night blog from the heart of Queenstown's premier and best night managed liqour establishment. As mentioned in the previous blog life at the moment continues to be excitingly mundane inter-mingled with myself and claire's domesticated bliss. Tonight i'll make my way home at 9pm when i finsh serving and humping beer and hopefully be rewarded with sausage curry a la claire. Failing that ill make myself cornedbeef sandwhiches. The job situation is still very the same with claire going off to work cleaning hotel rooms and finding a fine array of left-behind t-shirts in the morning, then returning to work the Hippo Lodge's front desk in the afternoon and evening. And i still hav the fantastic honour of cleaning toilets for my rent untill noon most days, ... read more

Well I've got to Queenstown now. Turns out it's a brash, cheesy tourist town determined to suck you dry of all your money, but is still redeemed by the marvellous country around it. I can't really complain since so many people (including myself) come here for the scenery and activities that people are naturally going to cash in as it is, to be honest, the only game in town except possibly real estate. And like I said, the country around is rather smashing. In order to get here I (perhaps foolishly) embarked on a trip cross country trip with Brent, his girlfriend Hayley and my cousin, Jessica across Arthur's Pass and down the West Coast in order to see some of what Brent describes as 'real New Zealand'. The hills along Arthurs pass (when you get ... read more

This photo was taken of me at the base of the Gondolas in Queenstown, which was midway through my 2 week tour of the South Island. My Journey actually began in Christchurch which I flew into and stayed there one night at the YHA before leaving the next day and travelling on the Tranzalpine train to Greymouth on the West Coast.... read more

Yeah, that's me doing the biggest bungee jump in New Zealand - the Nevis bungee, 440 feet. All 3 of us came back to Queenstown yesterday so we could jump together, and at 8am this morning we found ourselves on a 40 minute, off-road bus ride up a mountain to the bungee site. It's hard to explain how utterly terrifying the jump was. The trick is to just forget every bit of common sense and human survival instinct you've ever had. If you can do that, it's no problem. I found it to be much scarier than skydiving, mainly because you see the ground rushing straight towards you during the 8.5 second freefall. Plus, nobody helps push you off or anything. All they say is "5-4-3-2-1" and then somehow you shut your mind off and jump ... read more
