An alarm at 5:30 is never received well but with the promise of a great day in the mountains the edge was certainly taken off of it. I set off in the dark and headed straight through town and up to the one mile creek track. I followed the track up through the forests until I reached the open ground of the Ben Lomond Saddle. From the saddle I climbed up into the mist, snow and ice until I reached the windy summit (1746m). The cloud was still obscuring the view, so I hung around for 15 minutes until I couldnt feel my hands, and decided to head down. My cataract view of the scenery was returned to normal as I dipped back down below the cloud line. My walk then took me north along the ... read more

Planes are designed to be sat in. Clearly. So why jump out of one? Really? Well today I found out by jumping out of a plane at 15,000ft. Well, 16,200ft to be precise as Queenstown lies at about 1,200 feet above sea level. The day couldn't have been better for the jump. Hardly a cloud in the sky, the remarkables with a fine dusting of snow and a not-too-cold air temperature. 9 of us piled into the small plane (3x2 tandem jumpers, 3 cameramen) sitting in each others laps and started the slow spiralling ascent. The view was getting better and better the higher we went, and I was really excited about the jump. At 9,000 ft the first jumper went, then at 12,000 ft the next went. It was just me left to jump then. ... read more

Jumping out of planes isn't enough for me, I would like to fly one with no previous experience. Ok, so it's not quite the same, but I'm flying a plane of sorts and the only thing holding me up is wire. Aman and I do Fly By Wire!!!... read more

Hi Again folks. Havent been in touch for a while and as I find myself alone in the dungeons of Liquor King I thought i'd update. Recently as you'll have read Claire, Brian and Jeff were lucky enough to head out to Milford Sound and toddle around on boats and all sorts while I stayed and earned Dollar back in Queenstown - i'm not bitter grrrr.. So, feeling slightly miffed at not doing anything of note at present i've decided to try and run the Routeburn Track next week. Usually it takes around 3-4 days, but i'm reliably informed the record is something like 2 hours. I'm hoping to find a happy medium and do it in 6 or 7 hours. For those not in the know it's a 28km track heading through real Lord of ... read more

We had a lazy morning strolling around Wanaka before I caught by early afternoon bus to Queenstown. On arrival Queenstown appeared to be a prettier than average resort town, with all the normal fixtures and fittings (except for a bizarrely high number of Japanese restaurants). Queenstown sits perched on and above the banks of lake Wakatipu, and faces the imposing 'Remarkable' range of mountains. On the waterfront I found the Patagonia chocolate shop where I bought a divine cup of hot chocolate to sip while watching the sun set over the remarkables. After utilising the hostels hottub I headed out on the town with my dorm mates - two aberystwyth cum worcestershire sheep farmers, one random english bum, and three californian girls on a school trip. At $7.50 for 3 pints the drinks were free flowing ... read more

These blogs are a real killer when they are left to long! It took me four hours yesterday just to get the pictures formated and uploaded to the sight ( and yes Fro that was time and money better spent than on my last place fantasy baseball team). It seems a shame sometimes to be sitting inside on a computer when there is so much to do, but it's gotta be done, especially with the phone rates in most places. How I'd love to have my laptop here sometimes, just so we would always be working with the same system instead of being at the mercy of internet cafes. Enough kvetching, on with the story. For those of you who were extremely jealous of the warm weather I was having while you were suffering with winter....well have a chuckle to yourselves now. While I was driving out of Queenstown I encountered this!!!!!! I went to a great fun place called Puzzling World in Wanaka. The two pictures are just a slice of what they have there. These pictures demonstrate how Peter Jackson designed some of the sets for LOTR. One minute I'm perceived as a hobbit, the next a giant! I thought it was pretty cool. They also had a room where it's all tilted, things seems to defy our perception of gravity. A ball on a pool table, a chair on a rail and water seem to all go up a slant. This room also makes you dizzy. I just ... read more

Got the bus to queenstown today. its the hip, happening party and adventure capital of the world! well of new zealand at any rate but we weren't going stright there. First we stopped off at a place called 'puzzling world' created by a man with a decidedly warped mind. The illusion room was hilarious...lots of holograms and freaky optical illusions. There was also a slanting room....a room on a slope. the floor was probably at about a 45 degree angle! It totally messed with your head...and your balance!!! Leaving the room was tricky too because you went back on to level ground had to totally re adjust again! The big maze was the best bit! You had to find all 4 coloured corners and then the exit!! There was stairs and bridges that you had to ... read more

Sunday 23rd April. After a very sleepless night (torrential rain and high winds) we awoke to a sunny morning in Fox, ready for our journey through the Mount Aspiring National Park - destination Queenstown. After about 60 miles we arrived at Haast, the last town before the climb up through the National Park, a trip of about 50 miles to the next town Makarora. Unfortunately all the previous nights rain led to a mudslide on the road about 30 miles ahead and we were forced to spend 2 hours in Haast while waiting on news of the situation. It was pointless turning around as the only other way to Queenstown was via a 500 mile (?) detour back the way we came ! To kill some time we decided to head down to a little fishing ... read more

G'day (No I don't say that shit yet) Just got back into Sydney from New Zealand last night. That was a great trip I won't forget. I will give you the rundown. Kelly and I got into town a night before our Contiki bus was set to take off, so we went around town and checked out Christchurch Cathedral, got some food etc. The cathedral is pretty cool, and it is right in the dead center of town. It is a nice, mellow town, not a ton to do or going on. So I went to bed by myself in a room for 4 people. My roommates stumble in at about 3 am from their late flight and drinking. I can't see what they look like, but I get my ass out of bed shake their ... read more
