Mountains, Mountains Everywhere Australasia » New Zealand » South Island » Queenstown By kaleen185June 13th 2006Kaleen NoraWell, we left Christchurch today and drove to Queenstown. It was such a long drive because of the snow but it was very scenic. Mountains were always in the background with fields and farms in the front. Very pretty. Queenstown is so precious! It is a little city on a lake surrounded by mountains. I've never been anywhere like this. I am so excited to explore the city. Word has it that Queenstown is the adventure capital of NZ. ... read more

In the absence of notable events yet again i though i'd keep you all content with a short message to say we're still keeping well coasting along in qtnz. The last week has seen lots of gardening for me, lots of working, and looking forward to the winter festival (something fun for us at last). I also thought that some of you may enjoy seeing myself plying my trade as liquor salesman extrordinaire. Obsreve the thrills of setting at new stock; making deliveries to pubs in the small village of Arrowtown; working the tills; tring to figure out how to put together wine boxes. It really is a laugh a minute and the pictures only hold tetimony this...hmmm. Anyway at least you get to see what i do with my days..so behold pictures from the land ... read more

Hey all, we have been doing the saddo thing of noticing on the map where all the lord of the rings filiming has been done - not that much of a fan to know or remember where they were in the film, or what they should look like, but still its fun! We are in Queenstown this morning, and its like a little sking village, we are heading over to the west coast today, and then up to the north of the south island. Yesterday we visited a gold mine and panned for gold - no luck though, and we got cold hands!!! Then we had scones and jam and cream to warm upa bit!! Then we drove to queenstown, and intended to stay at a place called glenorchy, so when we drove down the 40km ... read more

Day 7: Wanaka-Queenstown An early morning stroll revealed that Wanaka minus the heavy cloud cover looks even better. We had to hit the road to Queenstown, though, and that was spectacular. (It may seem repetitive, this enthusiasm over the landscape here, but it simply keeps on coming - even if each day isn’t better than the last, it’s different.) At one point we were treated to a view from a greater height than I can ever recall seeing from a car. Queenstown itself is as much a tourist creation as, say, Cairns, and we are here on a long weekend. Fortunately, the ski season hasn’t started, so it’s not as busy as it might have been. We’re staying a little way out of town, and we have another delightful view of another lake. Today we visited ... read more

Day 5: Lake Tekapo Lake Tekapo is a tiny village right on the lake shore and with only a handful of shops. We drove over six hours, so were very happy to come across a great pizza place - Pepe’s, recommended through Lonely Planet. An open fire added to the cosy atmosphere. On waking up we marvelled at the fantastic view of the lake, with a beautiful blue colour and fog lying across the lake in feathery tendrils. There were only three or four other people in the whole place, which consists of caravan, camping, cabins, backpacker and motel accommodation - all just above the lake shore. We were glad the proprietor upgraded us to a motel unit although his only motive was to save us from the cold! We certainly noticed the freezing air, and ... read more

Hello everyone, As marc said a quick entry back into your virtual world of marc and claire. At the moment for me this consists of not working very much, my new boss is.......well actually i cannot put the words on here to describe her, she's shook me out of my very comfortable nest of money earning thats for sure. After two months of having it easy working away i'm now back on the hunt for a job, as is the entire backpacker population of southern new zealand it seems. The spare time was a novalty at first though and doing all those thing you do when you have too much free time.....walking up big hills and baking seem to be the previlant activities! And having cheeseboard picnics in the park with old friends from Paihia. More ... read more

Well, i hear you all cry what becomes of those two intrepid explorers who havent blogged for a while. As is the case at the moment work if you can get it, and not much at all if you cant. I'm still busying myself cleaning and liqour kinging (aren't i always) and slowly but surely getting funds rolling into the bank. I have however handed in my notice and will work up untill the end of June, before enjoying the Winter festival that comes to QTNZ (lots of activities and parties from what we can gather) and moving onto wellington. Not before time too i think, as although Queenstown is a nice place to come to, if you're working and not doing any of the spine tingling activities (i've done none even after 2 months - ... read more

Ahh I'm sorry I know its been days since I've written but this past week has been pure insanity. We arrived in Queenstown last night and this is the first chance I've gotten to sit down and write. Wow! So much has happened...let me rewind back to the day we left Christchurch. Our first destination was Mt. Cook, which was a few hours away so we drove through curvy countryside with views that I can't even explain. I felt like I was riding through a giant postcard. Some of the pics I've posted we're actually taken out of the bus window and they still turned out amazing. We stayed at a rugged little campsite type thing in the middle of nowhere.....there wasn't a store for twenty miles...but we were tucked in a valley, surrounded by incredible ... read more

Passing along the Crown Range Road, through the Cardrona Valley I detoured slightly to the small settlement of Arrowtown to soak up some of the local history at the Lakes District Museum, and later continued on to Queenstown. Surrounded by majestic mountains on the shores of Lake Wakatipu, Queenstown is no doubt New Zealand's most popular and commercialised year-round resort. The town (population 10,000) boasts adventure in all forms, from the extreme to relaxed. I opted for the latter and headed out to the quiet and supremely picturesque hamlet of Glenorchy, named after Glen of Orchy, Scotland. The whole area, including an homestead called Paradise, has been deemed stunning enough to act as movie back-drops for the Rockies, the European Alps and Middle Earth!! I managed to get a fantastic feel of the place by exploring ... read more

The Kiwi bus only stops at Wanaka for one night, for me this was not enough. Wanaka is a small village surrounded on all sides by vast mountains and an extensive lakes, it’s the most picturesque place I’ve stayed so far with the nicest hostel to boot. Four of us from the bus stayed on for some outdoor pursuits, two Danish girls and a Londoner called Raj. Raj and I hired out mountain bikes and went off to find the local trails which proved to be the best I’ve ever done. The area we went to was like a massive ski resort for bikes, there were green, blue and black runs crisscrossing a massive area of parkland, enough to test anyone’s abilities. Unfortunately there were no lifts so after five hours cycling up and down hill ... read more
