Wednesday 23rd August 2006 We got on the Stray bus and left Franz Josef heading for Queenstown. We stopped off for a walk round Lake Matherson, with it’s mirror image of Mount Cook (highest mountain in New Zealand) in the background. We also stopped off briefly to look at the other glacier nearby - Fox Glacier (where the mints are named after I guess?). We also stopped at a really nice beach called Ship Creek, where I spotted a dolphin. On our way between Hasst and Wanaka there was some incredible scenery - enormous lakes surrounded by snow-capped mountains. Lake Wanka and Hawea were very picturesque - see here and here. When we arrived at Queenstown we booked into one of the biggest and busiest hostels in Queenstown - which had it’s ups and downs. On ... read more

Well the scenery just keeps getting better, with each journey requiring ever expanding superlatives which in the end cannot do it justice. I've picked some of the best photos of the hundreds taken of snow capped mountains and glacial lakes, but even they fail to give a true impression of the enormity of the landscape between Franz Joseph, Queenstown and Milford Sound. We took the coach from Franz Joseph to Queenstown on Sunday, which was more like a tourist sightseeing trip than public transport, with a running commentary and photo stops along the route. Queenstown felt like a return to Meribel, with clear frosty air, roaring log fires and lots of mulled wine. Unfortunately my plans to go riding were thwarted by a pulled quad muscle (from the glacier climb). But I was consoled by lots ... read more

Hey all, Travels are now continueing in Lord of the Rings territory- its so beautiful and so cold! Everywhere you look there are snow capped mountains and lakes with emerald green water (that are so cold they have ice permanently on the bottom!) Started off in Christchurch with a few nights hotel accomodation before picking up another campervan- this one is much classier than oz van as it has a toilet and shower and microwave and heating! never thought we could be so happy by the sight of a toilet! Went Kiwi spotting in Christchuch- they are very cute and much bigger than thought they would be. Just relaxed and ate for the rest of the time and aclimatised to the change in weather (glad we packed the thermals). Headed off to Mt Hutt for a ... read more

Well, it's been a while since we last blogged back in S. America. We now find ourselves in a new country, New Zealand and another continent, although we're not entirely sure what it's actually called; is it Oceania, Australasia or something else? (Maybe someone can help...) We have a room with a view, we own a car (our first ever as it happens), we have pets, we own snowboards, we know how to snowboard (give or take), we've parachuted off a hill, we've done lots of tramping (I'll explain) and we've even done some paid work! Yes, it's safe to say we've settled down in a "home away from home". Firstly, our new abode... Well we live in Queenstown, adventure capital of New Zealand (maybe even the world), in the South Island. We have a room ... read more

Queenstown As you have probably gathered im more than a little bit behind in the writing of this blog at the moment so will do the best i can from memory. Unfortunately theres not actually too much to report from here because we sort of messed up and didnt leave to long here, wasnt really our fault as such, but was frustrating all the same. In the end we were only here for 2 nights and one full day, which basically gave me enough time for 2 nights out and one day of snowboarding. Was a bit of a strain on the system as got home after the first night at about 5 am and had to get the bus at 7.15, then take on about 8 hours on the slopes before another night out and ... read more

So after a week in Queenstown, it's time to get out of this cold weather (it snowed overnight down to about 800m) and head for some warmth and sun in Hawaii. The funny thing is that right now I'm technically in both Queenstown and Hawaii at the same time thanks to the Date line ::) Anyway, Kim and I spent the last 2 days boarding at Cardrona which was great on saturday but yesterday there were big patches of ice amongst the powder which made it really difficult. It was also really windy and a snow storm hit at about 1pm so it wasn't the best day to be out but that's the way it goes :) Anyway, I can't wait to go check out the latest volcano eruptions in Hawaii which I saw on the ... read more

We have traveled a lot, have visited lots of metropolises, large cities and small towns, and when somebody asks me which is the most beautiful town that I have seen, my answer is unequivocal : The Queenstown, New Zealand. Queenstown is small. It has a population of only about 15000 people, and is spread over the shores of Wakatipu lake which is 48 miles long, 3 miles wide and 1240 feet deep, and sits in a valley surrounded by the snow peaks of the Southern Alps. Maybe my perception of Queenstown is colored by the fact that we saw the town in the best possible conditions. We were lucky to be there in that beautiful town with the snow peaks shimmering in the bright sunlight by day and glimmering in the bright moonshine of a full ... read more

I've finally arrived in the fabled Queenstown, home of skiing, rediculous adventure pursuits and great nightlife, but more of that in a bit. Before I arrived here I was in Franz Josef, home to well, a big cold slab of ice sliding down the mountains, as in Franz Josef glacier and not much else. Franz Josef is a nice town, but small, there's only two streets, one with the hostels and one with the shops and pubs so there really is only one reason to go there and that's to climb the glacier which is a couple of miles out of town. You obviously have to go with guides to go with guides to avoid plummetting to your death down a bottomless cravasse so I decided to go on the full day trip where you spend ... read more

Well, I'm starting to see some of the appeal of this place. After arriving in the South Island, and still feeling distinctly underwhelmed by Christchurch and Dunedin, I've come to Queenstown. Can't deny that the lakeside setting surrounded by snow capped peaks, is spectacular (though I can't help feeling that I'd be less impressed had I made it to Bariloche....)!! Went up the gondola (cable car), and then had a very pleasant walk back down. However, after my 2 nights there is when things really improved! I picked up my hire car, and headed on down to Milford Sound. By this time, the weather had improved from relentless drizzle (something I'd almost managed to forget existed in the last 7 or so months), to completely, stunningly clear. Loved the drive down, and checked into my hostel. ... read more
