Post from Ryan: So…what’s today? Where was I yesterday? What town am I even in today? I seem to rarely know anymore. But to start the week we finally enjoyed a few American delicacies that we have been craving (see picture), Mmmmmm Dr. Pepper. Unfortunately though we have been having this undying urge for Cheese-Its and they don’t exist here. And now to our week… Wednesday July 5th: We drove to Wanaka after glacier exploring in Franz Josef (see last post), and searched high and low for a hostel or somewhere to stay in the general vicinity of Wanaka. Unfortunately for us it is the school holidays here and everyone is down in this area skiing right now, so everything was booked. It’s like trying to find a cheap room in Tahoe at the last minute ... read more

Hello and welcome to the first instalment of Jonnys New Zealand adventures. So far we have been in this beautiful country just over a week, and I can categorically say its pretty good over here. Arriving in Christchurch last Monday, the one thing that I wanted to get sorted pretty quickly was organising a car, and as the title hints, we did! The first day in Christchurch was spent getting used to the surroundings. It was pissing it down and I needed to buy some warm clothes- so I bought a fleece and some trainers. We also briefly bumped into the Jeffs (Bully's call)- the deaf Irish girls who were on our fraser island trip. Sadly the not-so-jeff one wasnt present so the conversation was difficult!! Christchurch is a small little town that is pleasant on ... read more

We had big expectations before arriving in Queenstown it had quite a reputation and didn't disappoint. The Stray Bus dropped us off, after some serious discussions and several viewings we decided Southern Laughter was for us. Mark & Georgina had a double bed room I roughed it in an 8 person dorm. Our priorities where adrenalin, football and partying. My dorm had a good mix of hard partying hard drinking travellers, that was one boxed ticked. We started the adrenaline rushes off in style with the Nevis Highwire. At 134m it is worlds 2nd highest bungy jump, that’s 8s of freefall a fucking long time! count it and consider you are plummeting towards the ground for that long! After signing your life away you take a basket out to the pod, a glass box suspended between ... read more

So three months on from my last blog and things have cooled down a bit here in Queenstown, we have had a couple of -12 nights which leaves all the windows in the house with a thick layer of ice on the inside, the toilet bowl froze and transforms our back yard into something out of Lion, Witch and the Wardrobe. This has made the posty run a little sketch in some parts but no big falls yet. Currently doing the town run whilst Daveys away. Its really socialable and people are starting to reckonize me as Dan the postman. The house is always nice and toasty now as we never stop the fire cranking and we have friends and family staying pretty much everyweek. Winterfest was crazy down here with huge nights, packed montains and ... read more

Wanaka seems to be a lovely ski/snow town - sat by the side of a lake with snow-capped mountains in the background. Has a funky little cinema with sofa's & even a reclaimed car you can sit in! Unfortunately there was only wierd NZ films on when we looked, so didn't bother, but it did look cool. Went for a Mexican (that traditional NZ meal!), and then a few beers with the Kiwi Bus to celebrate the driver's birthday! V. Apres ski!! The journey to Queenstown was delayed by a false-start by the bus, so we had to walk to our 1st stop on the edge on Wanaka - "Puzzling World". This was literrally an attraction dedicated to all things puzzling! Some of our bus had a competition around the maze, in which me & Zoe ... read more

After the detox bus, back to Queenstown for about 10 days for some skiing at Cardrona. Also met a crazy bunch of Oirish people, such as JD, Ruthie Henshizzle, Kiera McCormizzle, Dendron, Marion, Dave O'Grady and the infamous Garrrrrrrrrr - what a liability. Great bunch of people, but those Irish burds can't half talk!... read more

We drove over to Queenstown, hitting a couple of vineyards on the way for a couple of tastings. We went up Coronet Peak where Caleb had his first skiing lesson and I had a much-needed refresher lesson. My instructor ended up taking us over this bumpy bit to do little jumps which was a bit too much excitement for me. I took Caleb up a bigger run than his classes had been doing which resulted in the end of my career prospects as a ski instructor. The next day we went up The Remarkables on opening day for another ski which was great. Fantastic weather and a nice relaxing trip (apart from the sore legs).... read more

Well, this blog is written with mixed feelings. I’m now professionally older in years than when I started this trip. Yes, the grand old age of 24 has reached me as of 23rd June. On the plus side, this means I’m one year nearer to wiping that pesky student loan at 65, one year nearer some kind of highly amusing mid-life crisis, and one year nearer to retiring on a porch in the sun drinking port with a Labrador at my feet and a pipe. However, I still feel old. Hey ho…everybody laughs at this, so I will too. The actual event of birthday is catalogued in the accompanying pictures and basically involved small time - but jolly fine celebrations, with minimal cards, cheese and biscuits as presents (much saluting to Claire for concentrating on the ... read more

My god, a hard day yesterday, back up the slopes to progress in my new boarding interest, went up to the proper slopes, and promptly had a bit of a fall off the proper ski lift, nasty man at the top was more concerned with gettting me out the way than my wellbeing, then proceded to fall my way down the mountain, went back to safer climes and practised looking cool amongst the first dayers, as a surge forward I've booked a private lesson for saturday then will spend hours on the big slope again, to be fair NZ is a great place to learn to board as when you crash into people they are all 'no worries mate' and it's down to earth, no prada suits up here! today I'm in agony, twisted my ankle ... read more
