Hello all! We are now on the Kiwi Experience! Which is interesting..... Actually we are getting to see a lot more of New Zealand than would have otherwise been possible so I shouldn't be too rude! We left in a little minibus to get to Westport to meet up with the big green bus. Westport was a little town with nothing in it, and the weather was so miserable when we arrived that only one girl wanted to do the jet boating when we got there everyone else shivered in front of the fire in the hostel. The next day we made our way down to lake Mahinipou (or somehting like that) We stopped off for a walk at Cape foulwind so called by Captain Cook when he sailed around New Zealand. There we saw a ... read more

So another week of work over and the prospect of my Tuesday / Wednesday weekend loomed ahead. As usual I was looking for something of interest to do and after talking to (the now swiftly departed on a whim) Jeff a few days before about the subject, I decided that Mount Cook could be a good plan. After looking up the weather advice on Tuesday for a trip on Wednesday, I decided it was definitely a good plan. Mount Cook is a strange beasty which only uncovers itself on rare occasions. Indeed, I’d spoken to a fellow at one point in the north island who said he’d stayed at Mount Cook for a whole week, during which time he’d seen nothing but cloud. Being the highest thing in an area bombarded with moist weather moving in ... read more

Hello readers! Sorry for the lack of updates recently. We've been whizzing around like crazy and haven't made it to an internet cafe. So, I hear you cry, how can we possibly be busy when we've been on holiday for the last 4 months? Well... here's what we've been up to... We flew down to Sydney from Brisbane and spent about a week there, staying with my cousin Helen and Kelly, a friend of Sarah's. It was such a treat to relax in a proper house, with a kettle, tv and sofas. We really enjoyed our time and didn't do much sightseeing. It was fantastic to stock up on some home comforts, and great to catch up with Helen. She took me to the Lindt cafe in Sydney, which was really wonderful - full of chocolate ... read more

Okay, so Claire again out does me with regard to doing cool and interesting stuff on the blog, but never-the-less I feel I have to write a short piece regarding the corresponding picture. Thanks to Mum (incidentally it’s Mothering Sunday in New Zealand today rather than when we have it, which is a huge event and has been built up on the radio for a good 2 weeks - no danger of anyone forgetting here) I’ve been sent real English tea. Now, this may seem a small and trivial point to many but if you had had New Zealand tea for 5 months you would understand. It had got to the point where I had to use 2 tea bags per cup just to get reasonable taste. Hence my pleasure was absolute when tea manufactured from ... read more

Queenstown is very cool -- in more ways than one. First of all, the temperature is a lot lower than we had thought it was going to be. I guess we couldn't convert celsius into fahrenheit, but it's been quite cool here. The first day we arrived, it was raining and we felt cold in our jackets with sweatshirts underneath. Our first day we wandered around the town and were frozen! However the weather has been pretty good since (though it's raining today) and we've been able to explore and enjoy this city. Upon our arrival, Whit and Andrea (Whit's friend) picked us up from the airport and helped us check into our hostel. We've been staying at Deco Backpackers, just a short walk from downtown Queenstown. It's been a cool place, but we learned that ... read more

Hi again folks. Fresh on the back of my wander up to the top of Queenstown Hill last week, my days off this week were to be filled with a run of the Routeburn Track. However on Brain and Jeff’s return from their doing it reports of such a feat were not positive. In fact Jeff’s words were ‘…dude, that would be reallllly difficult, I’m not kidding..’, possibly with a bit more Anglo-Saxon included. Consequently the original plan was ditched and so I used my day off on Tuesday to find a more realistic activity. After a ponder around the local DOC (Dept. of Conservation) office in town, I finally decided on tackling Ben Lomand, a 1754m peak rising up to the left hand side of Queenstown. As I’m writing (the day after I did it) ... read more

Depsite not having a day off this week, oh the joys of having to take every shift that comes along, i still managed to fit in a couple of activities to keep myself happy. Firstly, harking back to my time in Paihia....hurrah me hearties i got to get out on the open seas (well lakes) again! After being told i wasnt needed in work 10 minutes before my shift started (grrrr) i hot footed it over to our office and scanned the leaflets for a quick trip to fit in before the afternoon shift.....shining out in the sea of adventures this time was SAILING! woooohoooo, remembering my passion for yachts i got myself and Hippo booked on and headed down. Now this isnt just any old sailing boat......it was an absolute beaut! A 70ft actual America's ... read more

I spent the day with Hiromi - we walked around town for much of it and generally chilled out! We made Okinomiyaki for dinner, Japanese pancakes with (in our case) Cabbage, mushrooms and bacon in them, and topped with the (non authentic!) mayo and brown sauce.... read more
