It's been awhile... After the slave island experience I settled back in Picton where I found good company and a job at one of the hostels, 2-3 hours a day cleaning for accommodation. Not so bad for supporting the life style. Now... almost two months later, I'm still cleaning for accommodation in the mornings; afternoons I'm working at an ice cream shop (you heard me!); evenings I'm washing dishes at one of the local restaurants. I'm also the lawn boy for Sue, the big boss lady of the ice cream parlor. Soon, I plan on running for mayor of this town. Certain places can just suck you in... but before too long I'll be leaving to finish my tour around the south island before my visa runs out, and then I'll have to take the departure ... read more

After the kiwi bus dropped us at the ferry terminal we boarded, ready for our three hour ferry journey to the south island and to Picton. On the ferry we saw some really nice views (although they would have been better on a sunny day). When we arrived at our hostel we were really happy as it seems more like a cosy little house and is costing us the same price for our own room , as it has been doing for dorms in other places. Everynight there is fresh homemade bread for all the guests and free kayaks and bikes to use. This is definitely one of our favourite places we have stayed. There are even fresh eggs from chickens in the garden and two cats which give it a real homely feeling. The first ... read more

Hello!! Despite the tiredness, the ferry ride was actually really nice, we had breakfast, watched a film and fell asleep and then sat outside as the ferry got to the South Island as the scenery was beautiful! I hadn’t been on the South Island for more than 5minutes before I managed to injury myself, slicing my toe open by accidentally kicking a clipboard left on the floor…ouch! We then got on our new bus, picking up about 20 people (about 19 of which were girls…apparently all the guys go on Kiwi Experience to pick up girls but all the girls go on Stray to run away from the guys!!) which we weren’t very happy about as we were used to our nice little personal group and bus! We had fish and chips on the beach, went ... read more

Picked up Charlie the camper van and headed up north. Drove along the coast and saw loads of seals. Made it to Picton and found a nice place to camp alongside some ducks. The next day we got as far as Nelson but Magnus was then sick as a dog. So far we have had more rain in one week in NZ than we did in the whole of South America. Wine tasting in Marlborough was nice, lots to choose from. Found a nice view in Kaikoura to camp by. Was too windy for whale watching but was somehow ok for tiny little sea fishing boat to head out into open water. Honestly thought the old man and one legged fisherman were joking about heading out. Caught seven seapurchase and two crayfish/langostines (which the fisherman cooked ... read more

We approached Queenstown from Lake Wakatipu and followed it round to the town. Queenstown is a busy town with an alpine lodge feel and is the undisputed adventure sport capital of New Zealand. The town is situated in a beautiful location surrounded by large mountains on each side with lakes, canyons and rivers all in the vicinity. The surrounding buildings are made of a combination of wood and stone with clear evidence of further expansion planned. As a result the area is a busy hive of activity with camper vans lining the car parks and thrill-seekers in search of satisfaction. For the thrill-seekers there are a host of options to choose from such as the conventional bungy jumping, jet boating or white water rafting to such oddities as canyoning and zorbing. The bungy was actually invented ... read more
