So off we set on the next leg of our adventure, only this time we were going to Queenstown...Queenstown is the center for adventure in New Zealand, it is where Bungi was invented and people drink cocktails in homemade Togas, out of Teapots. The town/Kiwi City is packed both winter and summer as it has so many other activies todo which are not snow related, we were a little bit early for the snow, so looked into other activies to get the blood pumping...The last time i was in Queenstown it was raininy and so i couldn't really see what the fuss was about, but arriving this time i realised the town is in a lovely Valley surrounded by the " Remarkables " mountain range, and was on a beautiful lake which rises and falls every ... read more

Journey To Picton We were debating whether to go to Nelson, which was a further hour from the ferry and Picton and would require a return journey. Not really wanting to double back and figuring we didn't really have any time to do anything there anyway, we decided to drive from Kaikoura straight to Picton. After the enjoyment of some authentic Fish n Chips (none of this frozen fish malarkey), the drive up to Picton was pretty straightforward and left a lot of the twisting roads behind. The scenery was nice as it took in a lot of the coast. The first thing we did in Picton was have a drive about and to discover there wasn't much to the place. Fair enough though, we were only in the town for the night and catching the ... read more

There are ferries everywhere in New Zealand, from faster than a speeding bullet to pokey little things that nearby ducks pass. The one you need to worry about is the inter-island ferry. About eight hours south of Auckland by car, the Interislander links the north and south islands. Cars, trucks and Movans ride below, while passengers ride outside on the deck or in one of the lounges. Ferries cross the sometimes very rough Cook Strait, then nose their way through Queen Charlotte Sound to Picton, a small town on the north end of the South Island. Three ferries link the North and South Island. These are ocean going vessels that zip through the Cook Strait from Wellington to Picton in about three hours. If you’re planning to island hop with a car or RV, book your ... read more

12 March 2008 We were up very early, in order to get back down the windy road to the information centre where we were being collected for our wine tour, after forgetting the voucher and nearly missing the bus, we were soon on our way to the wine region. Terry, our driver, was very knowledgeable and friendly. We were however, with a very mixed bunch of people!! A gay irish couple (i think or very camp), an Ozzie guy with bum bag and wife, a guy from auckland and his friends who absolutely 'loved South Africa'. The first winery was a smallish place called Lawsons we tried all 6 wines on offer and were particularly fond of the Sauvingnon Blanc, Daniel definately was not keen on the sweet wine ( it was the only wine he ... read more

With fall rolling in with its fine colors we knew our time here was beginning to count down. It was time to leave Christchurch and head North "for the winter", but not before one last Christchurch attraction - Kart World! We hopped into the fastest indoor racing cars in the country (or so they say) and took to the track. This windy track was easy for Kirby after driving the New Zealand roads but easier to be speedy when you know what is around the corner. After our fifteen minutes of fame we learned that this track was also enjoyed by some celebrities like Pink, Michael J. Fox, and others. We took a slightly different path heading North than on our way down and enjoyed the fall landscapes including hundreds of deer, and of course sheep. ... read more

That's it, time to say good bye to south island. We're in Picton where we stopped for the day. It was miserable there, raining and cold. So we decided to do a jigsaw for more than 8 hours! Furthermore, ... read more

How you goin?! The day after our glacier hike, we were driving to Kaikoura to meet Pea and Rob for the weekend, which meant we were able to drop Simon at Hanmer Springs. It was due to take about 8 hours so we were on the road at 8am. We had free camped the night before and it had been quite cold as we didnt have power, so we were pleased to be on the road. The scenery on the way was pretty cool with mountain backdrops, rolling fields full of cows and sheep, with lots of freshwater rivers. After about 5 1/2 hours we arrived at Hanmer and sais bye to Simon. We had spent almost a week with him, so it felt abit strange, without him there. He was a really nice genuine guy, ... read more

Two weeks into our NZ trip and we were keen to do some multi-day tramps using some of the 2000 or so huts maintained by the Dept of Conservation (DOC). These range from luxury spots with flush toilets and gas cookers to more humble shelters. For most you pay $5-10 (thats 2-4 quid) per night but for the posher ones you pay up to $25! Our first hut experience was Lake Daniells in Lewis Pass, just a two hour walk from thr road through beautiful virgin beech forest. OK, so you could quite easily walk to the lake and back in an afternoon, but there is something exciting about staying out in a hut; the beds are more comfy than a thermarest and you get to meet some interesting people, more of which later. Although we ... read more

Two days in a nunnery and I am now a reformed character... I am going to make sure that I try to cook lamb as well as the chef at the hotel. Gosh - it really was relicious - a rack of lamb which was so tender and juicy without dripping any blood. Yummy!! The chowder and puddings were good too - and yes, I have probably not lost any weight on this trip either!! (The rye bread was so light and it had caraway seeds in it - very good mix!) The meals have been exceptionally good and watching people in the hostels prepare their food has been interesting too - they have made their own dough for bread and pizzas, a couple here are just making scones which smell divine. Think I shall come ... read more

Matkailumuodon puolesta oli kuin Virossa: rollikka, lautta, hidas juna. Maisemat olivat kylla sitten ihan muuta! Herasin jo viiden jalkeen, ennen kannykan soittoa. Aikaa oli aamulla yllin kyllin. Pakkasin loput kamat ja suunnistin bussipysakille. Talla kertaa paasinkin rollikan kyydissa, ja maanantaiaamun liikenteessa rollikoita naytti olevan enemmankin. Viikonloppuna niita ei ollut nakynyt lainkaan. Olin asemalla klo 7.10. Asemalta oli ilmainen bussikuljetus laivaterminaaliin. Suuntasin Check-inin jonoon. Rinkka piti jattaa sinne, mika olikin katevaa: se kulki matkatavaroissa ensin laiva- ja sitten junamatkan. Laivaan mahtui 1600 matkustajaa. Laiva lahti klo 8.25. Istumapaikaltani naki hyvin eteenpain. Kavin valilla ottamassa kuvia laivakannella ja syomassa englantilaisen aamiaisen. Merenkaynti ei ollut kovaa, ja oli miellyttavaa matkustaa. Olo oli kuin Tallinnan laivassa. Varsina... read more
