Picton to Nelson Driving times: Picton to Nelson (direct) 144k- 2hours Leaving Picton for Nelson there are two routes to take. If the weather is good the most scenic route is the Queen Charlotte Drive that twists and winds its way through the Marlborough Sounds. One of the most picturesque drives in the country. Side trips from the Drive to go deeper into the Sounds are at Anakiwa. This is where the beginning of the Queen Charlotte Track is. Another long drive through the Sounds is the turn at Linkwater to Kenepuru Head. One of the most well known lodges is out this route, the Portage. Continuing on Queen Charlotte Drive the road finishes 36kms from Picton on Highway Six. Turn right and you are in the small hamlet of Havelock. Havelock is cne of ... read more

Travel Guide from Wellington to Picton Let's get this travel on the road............... We will begin our South Island travel in the North Island providing information for driving into the Wellington area from the north in order to get on the Bluebridge Ferry and, time permitting, also to enjoy the wonderful city of Wellington. Wellington................ First the roads to the city converge whether you are approaching on either Route 1 or Route 2. Entering the city you will go though several kilometres of road congestion. Try not to be there during the busy times when people are going to or coming from work in the city if possible. When you are driving in via Route 1 there are signs to turn to the ferry. If you are planning to use the Bluebridge Ferry ignore these ... read more

My last entry touched on what it was like to be in the same place for a while and the good parts and the challenges that came along with that. Since then I've been moving about quite a bit and have had a wide variety of experiences. I'm currently in Picton, which will be my final stop on New Zealand's South Island before hopping on the ferry to go to Wellington on the North Island. I'll do my best to bring you on the journey from Queenstown to Picton... I still had quite an apathetic approach to leaving "Queeny" and didn't even get out on the road to hitch until 3pm or so...not usually the best time to try to randomly catch a ride to another city. But since this is the world's easiest country to ... read more

Left Abel Tasmen and headed back to Picton (where we got off the ferry on the way over). I got here at lunchtime but wasn't feeling great so booked into a motel and spent this afternoon reading in the sun by the sea. The foreshore at Picton has been turned into a sort of park with trees, grass and lots of benches so it's a nice place to do not much. Also, there is a good cafe 2 mins away :-) Getting fed up with driving now - have driven over 2500km on the south island alone. Having said that, I've decided to drive back down to KiaKoura to try and do the dolphin watching trip that we couldn't do the other week. ... read more

South Island startAnna Caswellurl='/Videos/2949.html' onclick='dialog("/Videos/2949.html?popped=1","tbvideo",600,600);return false;'Malborough Sound Photos have arrived! I finally arrived in the South Island on Tuesday afternoon, on the huge ferry that chugs its way across from Wellington to Picton. I attempted to sit out on the deck, and reminisce of another ferry crossing in Costa Rica. However the thick grey cloud and grey sea, cold wind and smell of diesel fumes made things too different to compare. In recompense there was a distraction towards the end of the journey - a pod of dolphins appeared, and not just one or two but hundreds following the boat at a distance! I’d been warned that there were large pods of dolphins all around the South Is, but it wasn’t until I saw them that I could actually believe it... read more

Today we ventured back to Picton to enquire about a spot of fishing. We arrived at 10.30 and there was one company left who was about to leave. He very kindly agreed to wait for us to get our stuff together. We needed warm clothes and waterproofs as it was a very windy day. We got on the bumpy boat and had an hour journey before getting to our fishing spot. Bex was a little nervous about this ride, being fairly prone to seasickness. However, any discomfort was soon forgotten when we saw a pair of dolphins swimming alongside our boat. They were a mother and baby that are apparently regular visitors to the boat - the fishermans wife reckoned they liked the sound the boat made! They were abosultey gorgeous animals, we both could have ... read more

After leaving A & N, we caught the Wellington to Picton ferry, which is a 3 hour journey from North to South. It's a very picturesque trip, especially when you get to the south island as you travel between lots of small islands. We spent some time in Picton, but there's not really much there so we picked up a new hire car and headed south a bit to Marlborourgh. Unfortunately we missed the turning for the scenic coastal route and ended up on the main road, but it's all relative and it was still a nice journey. That night we stayed in a cheap motel and went out to a local tavern for a meal. Obviously everyone stopped talking and turned to look at us as we walked through the door. We had a ... read more

Mot to Picton Australasia » New Zealand » South Island » Picton By jenronApril 1st 2007 Said a sad goodbye to Richard and headed very early to Havelock with the intention of catching the mailboat on a tour of Pelorus sound. Due to cock-up due to out-of-date Lonely Planet book missed the intended boat and instead headed to Picton to catch the afternoon mailboat around Malborough Sound. This was a good trip. The scenery is magnificent and it is interesting to see the mail being delivered at the remote wharfs of houses far from any road. The weather had improved enormously. We booked into a hostel at Pic... read more
