From the markets of Rajasthan to the cosmopolitan streets of Sydney and Paris, our hiking boots and quick dry clothing never quite fit in. Finally on the south island of New Zealand we found an entire town full of people dressed just like us. Once an isolated farming community, Te Anau has become an important gateway to the spectacular Fiordland wilderness areas. Most of the locals we met seemed to be working in between their outdoor pursuits of hiking, kayaking and climbing. Less than 24 hours after our arrival on the south island we were on our way to the start of the Milford Track. Dubbed "the finest walk in the world" by an enthusiastic journalist this hike was initially accessible only with a guide. The first hikers to break the rules were christened "freedom walkers" ... read more

Got the ferry from Wellington to Picton. We had to check in at least an hour before departure and the trip was 3 houirs across. The ship didn't seem to travel very fast. The last hour of the jorney travels up the huge river towards Picton and there seems to be no sign of human life either side until you reach the port. We decided to drive down from Picton to Kaikora and checked into a Camp Site for the night. Played some pool and watched some Premiership football highlights from the weekend. ... read more

Tuesday 2nd January 2007 We got up 1.5 hours later than planned and rushed around trying to leave Christchurch. We went into town and picked up a hire car from Thrifty that needed to be relocated to Picton (so cost us nothing but petrol). It was a Toyota Corola - not too bad, but not the V6 Ford Falcon I was hoping for... I dropped off my snowbaord bag (with all my kites, some winter clothes, books, snowboard, etc) and my new paraglider at Dave's-- my paragliding instructor--house. The plan was when the rest of my paragliding kit (harness and reserve chute) finally arrive, he would put it with the glider and get both packages picked up by the transportation company I had arranged to send it all back to my parents in the UK. We ... read more

So I can't remember what I was telling you guys last. ThinkI was writing about the Abel Tasman adventure when my internet time limit was up. Let me give this a try....ok, so Ciara, the Aucklander arrived to the eating place we were at, after our 20 min hike...to drink a beer, but i thought how can she drink one so early in the morning (10am) but i had to understand that this was going to be her last chance to enjoy one since her she still had 6 days of mopre hiking thru the abel tasman (she had planned on doing the route twice, back and forth, crazy idea i thought, bc she was lugging around her 40lb back pack with her since she had to carrry all her necessities). WEll, an hour later we ... read more

From Picton we took the Queen Charlotte drive towards Nelson. The winding narrow road followed the blue water bays and coves of the sound. The coastal road eventually gave way to a wide open valley fields and the forested lowland of rolling hills. In all it was a two or so hour drive to Nelson, our base of operation for the Christmas shuttered period. Nelson, a highly touristed town reportedly has the most days of sunshine in NZ. We were not disappointed during our two days in town…. Perfect weather! We arrived the day before Christmas and thought that a $5 secrete Santa shopping expedition in town would be good fun. We went our separate ways and met back up later that afternoon. For wrapping paper I was able to convince the Katmandu sales woman to ... read more

We just returned from a three-day tramping adventure through the Queen Charlotte Sound in the northern part of the South Island of New Zealand. Far and away it was the best experience of this trip so far. Over those three days, we hiked over 60 kilometers through some of the most goregous scenery I've ever seen. Day 1: Furneaux Lodge - Camp Bay. Flat & muddy, ferns. Grassy farms with cattle, sheep, and rooster! Day 2: Camp Bay - The Portage. BEST DAY EVER. Up & down, up & down, over and over and over. Best part was the aptly named Eatwell's Lookout, where we had our daily serving of tramp shmear (peanut butter, boyenberry jelly, and nutella sammie) and got a 360-degree view of both the Queen Charlotte Sound and the Kenepuru Sound. It was ... read more
