I have just arrived after a wonderfully calm crossing, I am so glad I didn't come yesterday as they had an awful time of it apparently. Picton is so pretty I am going to explore before arranging the Abel tasman walk. This is just a shortie as I am running out of time. Hope you all survived the storms, as Livvy said it is rather suspicious that they arrive when I am away... no fault of mine I can assure you!! Spent yesterday walking up the Colonial Knob.... sorry, just had to mention that LOL!!... read more

Whilst heading to Picton we discovered our super duper battery charger had stopped working. Took it apart to discover a wire had come adrift. What to do? NO MORE PHOTOS!!! We'd bought the charger in Singapore and it could not be replaced here!!! However the day was saved when we managed to find an auto electrician in Blenheim, who kindly welded the wire back together for us. Arrived in Picton and found that the ferry tickets were cheaper if we waited till the monday (This gave us an extra 2 days on the south island) Headed for the Edwin Fox museum, didn't cost a lot. And as it's steeped in history it's well worth a visit. We then decided to head towards Nelson, but we got as far as Pelorus River only to discover the ... read more

Day 10-Queen Charlotte Track Hike Alex dragged our butts for a 23.7Km hike today through forest, desert, hills and by the end it was hell for Moe, but it was his honeymoon day so I sucked it up and lead most of the way!!! Anyway, we finished it and it was worth it, even the terrible down hills. After the hike we headed back to the Sennen House and rested our tootsies and then decided we needed to walk a little more and headed back into town for dinner. BTW, the Kiwi's idea of nachos are tortilla chips, hot tomato sauce and melted cheese. Not so good, but Alex finished them off without missing a chip. We then walked back home and watched a really old episode of Prison Break. They are about 6 weeks behind ... read more

Day 8 - Last night we spent our first tonight together at a B&B and I (Alex)spent my first night at a B&B. It was interesting to say the least. This morning we got up and had breakfast with a nice couple from England then started on the first hike of the day. We spent the first part walking along the ocean looking at a seal colony. We then headed up hill and did the cliff top walk. We left Kaikora around 1:00 PM after having lunch at Subway (tried to save a little money, Subway here is similar but not the same as in the States). We drove North to Picton and drove through more wine country. It was very pretty! We arrived in Picton and checked into the next B&B which is absolutely amazing!!! ... read more

I ended up going to this no frills fast'ish food place twice for Fish and Chips. I got the upgrade #1 both times which was described on the menu as two fish and one full scoop chips for NZD $10.20. Each piece of fish was quite large and meaty. They pile it all in a brown paper bag, and hand it over the counter to you, but only if you have a ticket! Oh, and tartar sauce and tomato sauce were both extra. It helped to quaff a pint after this kind of feed bag.... read more

After my Swim with Dolphins tour, I got warmed up and dried off and did this little hike on the South East corner of Picton, and was told there were great views up there. The hike was nice and the views were quite nice. Just enough exercise to warrant a trip to the pub for a pint afterwards.... read more

Upon arrival in Picton, which is I believe the smallest town I visited in New Zealand, I did a quick charge around town to get the lay of the land. Here are some photos from that excursion. By the way, I was supposed to stay in a NZD $115.00/night studio in the Aldan Lodge, but they didn't have any studios available when I arrived, so I got a nice upgrade for free to a 5 bed, two level unit with a circular (but quaint) staircase to the upper level loft. Pretty nice digs for me I must say.... read more

Hello everybody. Sorry that it took me so long. But internet is getting more expensive and I am getting cheaper. What happened? (read with Indian accent). Napier: 7-11 january So I left you when I was on my way to Napier. I stayed there a few days in a backpackers where a lot of people were actually living, which made it somekind of nice cosy house, full of nice food everyday. I learned to make dumplings with the Japanese, dapmfnudln with the germans.. Also Napier 'an sich' was interesting because I finally could see some 'interesting' architecture. In 1931 there was a big earthquake wich distroyed the whole city. So they built it back, in one style: art deco, wich we could interpret as the american follower (opvolger) of our precious art nouveau (wich is much ... read more

It's a treat driving in this country cause having driven the west coast of Australia, distances don't seem far unless you've to do about a 1000km in one day- which never happens here. The only thing slowing us down are the windy roads. We arrived in Picton to stay in a lovely hostel called "Tombstone". It's so nice to stay in places where the owners are still enthusiastic about their business because it makes your stay so much better. This hostel is themed on the graveyard notion because it's across the road from one so it has a door shaped like a coffin lid & quirky little things about the hostel that build on the theme. That said though, the owners were lovely & helpful in organising our trek....not to mention the free breakfast so can't ... read more

We were Knackered when we finished the Kayacking tour but decided to plod on to picton so we would have a day to enjoy the vinyards of the Marlboough region. Ken from our trip hitched a ride and sat up front while I lay up back on the bed so the coppers wouldnt see me......After an hour driving we stopped off in Nelson next to a chippy, as we were starving. Graham and I milled around outside eyeballing the menu and deciding if we were hungry enough for a full scoop of chips to accompany our deep fried battered blue cod mmm mmm mmm. Ken returned from the restroom and pronounced that he did not eat fried foods, which was very clear from the Man's physique, as being in his sixties, he had muscles on his ... read more
