Day 20 - Wednesday 3rd It’s a pleasant morning, sunny and warm with some cloud. We head around Queen Charlotte Drive and Marlborough Sound to Nelson. The scenery is spectacular but Doreen doesn’t like the winding roads close to the edge of steep ravines, especially as the timber barriers seem too flimsy to save anything. We stop at a fantastic viewpoint near Havelock. David takes a walk to the summit through native bush but finds that he left the anti-midge cream in the hotel. Don’t panic! Fortunately, he gets the photos and didn’t get bitten so we survive for another day. The views around here are sublime, fantastic vistas all round. We drop downhill to the town famous for green lipped mussels. We can’t enjoy them because we’re not staying here. Drat! An old man, in ... read more

I spent the last eight daze WWooFing on Arapawa Island. It's a 25 km long isle with a residential population of 40. Home to the whaling stations of old and WWII military outposts, its channel is the gateway through to the South Island. I had to board the only transport available to get there, the biweekly running mail boat. Now when they said, "Just jump on the mail boat." I had pictured a weathered rowboat with an outboard engine attached to it being piloted by an old, salty bloke who's eyes were winkled shut by overexposure to the elements, sucking on an unlit cigar. Evidently my expectations couldn't of been further from the truth and I was disappointed by my imagination, once again, for the boat was a well equipped dual hull state-of-the-art monster. The 900 ... read more

Motorhome News from New Zealand 6 19th November 2008 Farewell to South Island Greymouth, Punakaiki (Pancake Rocks), Kohaihai, Oparara Valley, Westport, Lewis Pass, Kaikoura, Blenheim, Queen Charlotte Track and back to Picton. New Zealand's South Island roads have been such a joy to travel; courteous and careful drivers with all the time to get wherever, whenever. Just very occasionally a car appears out of nowhere to overtake on a bend or a sleepy European visitor pulls out on the wrong side of the road. There are traces of accidents here-and-there however; crosses with flowers in the most unexpected places - drink or speed the most likely causes, or wheelies, Saturday night's twisting tyre marks left on the tarmac from hand-brake turns and high-speed swerves. The road north from Greymouth was quiet, a leisurely drive past rocky ... read more

Hello Carrying on from we left off last time. We left Pohara Beach and its wonderfrul warm sunshine (sorry my sense of humour does get me, or should, get me, carried away - or should) and tackled Takaka Hill again. I have to say that Nancy does manage these windy mountain passes much better than l do. Anyway we were managing very well until we came to some unexpected roadworks when they was such a clatter from inside the van - we had shut the kitchen drawer but forget to lock it - almost everything had come out of the cupboard. Thankfully nothing was broken and would you belive it we have never done it again since. It was 10.30 and time for a big Kiwi breakfast (Nancy's idea - honest). We stopped at the Red ... read more

Greetings wizards, orcs and ents. We are writing from beautiful New Zealand, know for many things: astonishingly beautiful scenery, sheep farming, kiwis (both birds and fruits) sand flies, and (most recently) as the setting for Peter Jackson's "Lord of the Rings" films. Now, we're not really SciFi/Fantasy people, but we did enjoy the movies and can't help getting caught up in our gorgeous surroundings. It really is an otherworldly kind of natural beauty that pervades the outdoors here in New Zealand. Flying in from Sydney to Christchurch and particularly on the connecting flight to Queenstown (our first New Zealand stop) we got our first taste of the splendour of the kiwi landscape: emerald green valleys and expanses of lakes guarded by snowcapped mountains looking like blankets draped over the countryside. Bob Ross could not paint ... read more

Rain was still falling as we awoke early to a very bleak morning in Reefton. After a quick breakfast, we were on the road bright and early for the four hour long drive to Picton, on the north east coast, where we are taking the afternoon "mail run" cruise on Queen Charlotte Sound. As we left Reefton the evidence of the heavy overnight rain became obvious with minor floods on the road as water flowed from the saturated hills and paddocks. Luckily we allowed ourselves ample time for the trip because this was going to be a real challenge in the conditions and the twisting winding road that were in front of us. After two hours of slow, hard driving through the rugged Victoria Ranges it was a relief to come upon the Buller Gorge Adventure ... read more

It poured all night and as we left the next day headed for Wellington to catch the ferry to the South Island. Our ferry was a 1pm so we had lots of time. We walked around a little while we waited and came upon a film crew doing their thing. The ferry was gigantic and uneventful and now that brings us to Picton where we decide whether to stay put a couple of days or not. So you've caught up with us and if you feel as if you've followed a whirlwind, then you are truly sharing our experience! Nighty night. We did decide to spend at least 2 days in Picton and we had a beautiful, sunny day for activity. We ask about tramps (walks here) and find one that they say is a 40 ... read more

We got up much earlier than usual and suprised ourselves when we were on the road by 8.30am. Deciding not to stop anywhere on the way, we arrived in Kaikarou on the east coast by lunchtime. We stopped for lunch at a seal lookout point and it wasn't until after the first sausage sandwich that we noticed a seal only metres away. He quickly became aggitated as we all started frantically taking photos. Once lunch was finished and led by Dale we headed off over the rocky shore around the peninsula. After only 5 minutes we came across a seal preventing us from progressing any further. We spent about 5 minutes sizing each other up and then Dale realised that we should be ontop of the cliff rather than in its shadow. This gave us a ... read more

So North it was for us, well north and then a swift right to take us too a lovely place called Hamner springs, this was meant to be one of the places to go if you wanted some hot water springs action, and by this time i fear we were both in desperate need of a break and some R and R. So to Hamner springs we headed, arriving at a wonderful guest house which was recommended to us by some fellow travelers, called la Guit. Run by a lovely French couple and their very friendly cats. The place was great and we headed off into the town center, to go and experience these hot springs and maybe treat ourselves. The treat turned out to be a wonderful massage, which after having a dip in the ... read more
