Elämä on. Nähtävyyksien sijaan päädyttiin käppäilemään Wellingtonin ostoskadulla Cuba Streetillä. Pari tuntia siellä kierreltyämme ja lounas mutus... read more

After spending 3 fun days in Rotorua (I HIGHLY recommend the Rotorua Museum of Art and History), our 2 families decided to explore a bit further north, taking the road up past Tauranga and the Bay of Plenty and up into the Coromandel Pennisula along the Pacific Coast Highway (which must be the OTHER Pacific Coast Highway because everybody knows that the original PCH goes down US-101 from Washington to California.) Turns out this is a pretty winding road, and, for the first time since I was a kid (and my dad was on a bender to make it from Oregon to Wisconsin and refused to stop the car for any bodily needs), I threw up in the car. That's how winding the road was. Despite that, it was great trip! I absolutely love the fern ... read more

Sick/Happy by Hell is for heroes off the under appreciated Neon Handshake album. Excellent song. But yes i am sick, i got food poisoning a couple days ago (i wont go into details, but its unpleasant) and i haven't shaken it yet; although i did manage to drag myself into town, so i am getting better. I was also sick about 3 weeks ago, when i ate some left over lasagne and got sick from all the cheese. Ha! I'm stuck being vegan for ever as my body can't process cheese anymore! Ok, so i spent 2 very pleasant days in Rotorua (the second of which with a very charming Australian librarian cvalled Rosie) and did a bit of the tourist thing (we went on a coach tour!) and then made my way up to the ... read more

(14/11/07) Collected our hire car a Nissan Pulsar and headed out of Auckland. We have bought a cycle rack so will be trying to buy some bikes somewhere too. Said our Goodbyes to our new found gang of mates and left. The drive was lovely winding along following the coast just above the water line. It is so beautiful here, and peaceful. We passed through Thames and ended up in Coromandel town. We arrived at 8pm but there is nowhere open. Nowhere to eat. the town is closed. Phoned my aunt in Rotorua to arrange a date to meet later in the trip. (15/11/07) Checked out and loaded up car, drove to a town called Whitianga via a notorious 309 road (where cars get broken into loads). We drove along the windiest (not wind like blowing, ... read more

Today we headed to the Coromandel Peninsula, southeast of Auckland. We said goodbye to the Bavaria B&B and rented our little car. Driving on the left side of the road was really pretty easy and we made it out of the city and on to the highway. We took a few stops to enjoy the scenery, do some shopping, and hunt some geocaches. We even stopped at someone’s house to buy some avocadoes. Our route crossed some small mountains and there were some sections just like West Virginia switchbacks. The scenery along the Coromandel Coast was beautiful, lots of looks over blue harbors as we wound through the mountains right along the water. (Note from Amy: Brian is doing a fantastic job driving and all I’m doing is feeling sick from all of the “swirlies”). We ... read more

Another perfect day in paradise. After a lazy morning with breakfast in the little garden overlooking Hot Water Beach, we packed up for a short hike. About 15 minutes away was a trail the leads to Cathedral Cove. The hike started at the top of the overlook and took about 30-40 minutes down the trail. The end of the trail put us on a small beach with a rock formation similar to the Hole in the Rock (see above). The difference is that at low tide you walk through instead of sail through. The archway is the “cathedral”. We took a bunch of pictures, scrambled around some rocks, and ended the visit by finding a geocache that almost beat us (Amy didn’t give up). After the hike back up the mountain, we had earned some food. ... read more

It was a very hot night, punctuated by heavy rain and the fact that I fell out of bed! It wasn’t a loud crash, but I was awake enough to stop myself hitting the floor. That’ll teach me to ensure the double bed is set up each night, rather than the single one! Still, I had a good night’s sleep and awoke on time at 06h30. I washed, got myself dressed without any adult assistance and went into town for a slap up breakfast at Mrs Ahmed’s Pie Shop. After reading the paper (world news demoted to a single page), I made my way back to the van, packed everything (nearly) away and went off to hand in my keys (and claim my $10 refund). That done, it was later than I’d have liked and I ... read more

Hello all. So I was going to post yesterday, but I only get 30 min for 2 NZ dollars, and my computer turned off, so that is counter productive for what I wanted. Anyway, we are currently in Thames which is just south east of Auckland by about 2 1/2 hours. The area is called Coromandel Peninsula and it is absolutely beautiful! We drove about 3 hours up and down the coast yesterday which, by coast I literally mean right on the edge of the water. Spray from the ocean was actually hitting our windshield at times. Today we hiked about 5 hours, almost getting to Pinnacles, which is pretty literal as the name suggests. It is one of the highest points in the area. There are many of these pinnacles and they are basically lava ... read more

things i must remember about my stay at kauotunu motor camp. a. the name. kauotunu. maybe the spelling. b. dilwin, her husband, and her two adorably cute and crazily hyper boys. c. the family get together and barbecues i was allowed to be a part of. heather and nigel's good bye barbecue. how quickly i was welcomed into a world and a group of friends. d. walking through the campground and doing a double take at the crystal clear stars up in the night sky with nothing to distract from their clear patterns. e. millions of tiny, broken down shells. a colorful, sand mosaic. f. nearly falling off the kauri walk as i inadvertently tried to hike down the side of a cliff that was never intended to be hiked down. that was a close call. ... read more

a houseful of boys. i was under the impression that the problem with place was going to be that it would be too quiet, that i would be too lonely. i had a huge house to myself, all the hot showers, tv, and internet that i could ever desire. i was wrong. it turns out this home is actually a revolving door for the family next door who help run the campground. dilwin and john have two boys, ben and carl (pronounced cahl), ages 6 and 4, who run rampant up and down the steps, leaving a joyful mess in their wake. at first, this proved totally disconcerting as i had no idea that the house was this sort of open coming together place at all hours. also, i absolutely could not keep up with cleaning ... read more
