Day 30 - Saturday 19th May Drove to carpark for Cathedral Cove where it felt quite breezy and cool. The four of us took a walk along the very scenic coast path stopping at Gemstone Bay and Stingray bay on the way to Cathedral Cove. It was all very pretty and for the most part, we walked on a path through bush (full of palms, tree ferns, and some big trees) and some fields. The sea all along was a gorgeous turquoise blue colour! It turned out to be a hot and sunny walk, we could have worn shorts, t-shirt and flip flops rather than the jeans, jumpers, coats and walking shoes!! Initially we laughed at sar when she suggested changing into shorts for the walk, but we wished we had! It was the hottest day ... read more

Day 29 - Friday 18th May Sar drove north to Hahei. The scenery was lush as always!! On the way up passed a kiwi scenic reserve too. If we had trecked (tramped) off into the bush, we're sure we would have found several!! The campsite here was quite empty. We had a little walk on Hot Water Beach at sunset, which was quite pretty! Part of the sand was so pinky and orangey from all the shells, lush!! At the campsite Nik, Amz and Gem donned there scary faces and put on the mud mask!! Was quite funny! Sar laughed at us anyway! We sat around the table playing cards, while Sar was lost in her book! We prepped the pizzas for tea in the van and amz and gem went off to cook them in ... read more

Day 28 - Thursday 17th May Porridge, porridge! Emptied toilet and filled water...hmmmm! Filling the water up took AGES!! It just kept filling and filling and filling....... You could have filled up a few baths!! That's another thing... they didn't seem to have filled up the water when we picked the van up, but that was because there was something wrong between the waste tank and water tank. We hardly used any water before it had to be filled up again. Dropped the van at the garage to be repaired and wandered into town again. Oh... forgot to say, when we arrived in Rotorua, you certainly know about it!! It smells of bad eggs! After picking the van up we drove out to Hell's Gate again to do our free walk. The walk around the thermal ... read more

The family staying in our apartment left early so we had the place to ourselves for breakfast on the balcony. The weather again was superb - we’ve been incredibly lucky with the weather considering it is autumn in NZ. We headed off to Cathedral Cove which is just a short distance down the coast and near the Hot Water Beach. It is a popular walking spot. From the car park there is a good path along the cliff tops which gives excellent views over the lovely bays and many beautiful little islands along the coast. The walk passes through lush bushland. Our favourite sounding bird the Tui was calling loudly and beautifully. We descended steeply to Gemstone bay which a snorkelling route marked with buoys in part of the protected marine nature reserve. The water ... read more

We started the day with a nice leisurely breakfast on our sunny balcony. We jumped in car and headed for the 309 dirt road which crosses the hilly spine that runs down the centre of the peninsular. It is hilly and twisty but very quiet (no monstrous logging trucks as encountered on many mountain roads). Half way along there is a short walk to a magnificent grove of Kauri trees. Nearby there is an interesting ‘Siamese’ Kauri where two trees have fused into one. The whole area is incredibly luxuriant in greenery. There is one especially impressive peak called ‘Castle Rock’ which is climbable, but I couldn’t persuade Jen and didn’t fancy doing it alone. We reached the smaller than anticipated but quaint old gold town of Coromandel. After ambling the streets and an obligatory ... read more

We toured Tauranga and Mount Maunganui before leaving. We’d been wrong to judge them on our brief view of the previous day. The café lined front at Tauranga is lovely and the beach running south from Mount Maunganui is beautiful. We had a deadline to meet so we had to leave but it would have been nice to dally. The intention was to reach the ‘Hot Water Beach’ on the Coromandel Peninsular. The hot water seeps up from a spot on the beach that is accessible one and a half hours either side of low tide which today was at 2:38pm. The journey took a bit longer than I expected. The road was more hilly and bendy than I anticipated and we got stuck behind slow quarry and logging trucks at times. We arrived at ... read more

After our extreme time in the Bay of Islands we headed back down to Auckland so that we could start the Kiwi Experience. For those of you who don't know about the Kiwi Experience it is a bus network for young travellers like ourselves who want to get around New Zealand and don't want to be surround by slow old folks. We really wern't sure what to expect - a group of smelly travellers trying to "get it on" non stop - or a load of crazy kiwis doing stupid things. Well....it was a mixture really. We got picked up in Auckland by our first bus driver 'Scotty' who was basically a nutter allowed to drive the Kiwi bus. He took us to Mount Eden and we saw the extinct volcano there which was pretty groovy ... read more

Well I finally have some time to sit down and update my site, I have been pretty busy and you have to pay of the internet so I was waiting till I found a cheap place that I had enough time to sit down and wright so here I am, sorry it has taken so long. Day 1: On the first day of my tour it was a bit of an interesting day because I got on the bus and there was some people already on it and then people just starting like me. But it seemed like alot of people either came with other people or already were part of a group of people. and I found people to not really want to make new friends and if you tryed to talk to them they ... read more

Da ... read more

There is life in the Coromandel! As I wandered into town to pick up some bread I discovered the high street was packed! Quite a contrast to last night! After a good breakfast of a bacon and sausage sandwich we head north up the peninsular towards hot water beach. Today is our first real viewing on NZ as we drove in the dark last night. All I can say is that our first impression in one of amazement. The views are spectacular and Kirsten summed it up well when she said, “It’s as if God went crazy with the seeds”. It’s such a rich landscape with both a tropical and alpine like feel. There seems to be a new wonderful scene around each bend. Along the way to Hot Water beach we pick up a ... read more
