Day One of the Kiwi Experience bus pass from Auckland ----- Chirstchurch After a late start we were on our way, the first main stop on our trip is Hahei Beach. Despite feeling quite unwell I signed up for another kayaking trip - which promised some of the best paddling in N.Z. The 3hr trip had aparently won awards so i thought I would give it a go. I was pretty pleased to see tandem kayaks layed out on the beach because I can hardly breath today. the relatives have a cat and I didn't bring my inhaler with me so for the past day or two I have been pretty breathless while I have been at their house - but as yet the feeling has not worn off. Een gelukkig nieuwjaar voor allen! Bij ons thuis in Goor (voor insiders: “He, grappig dat je het zegt, daar heb ik 18 jaar gewoond.”) hadden we altijd een ritueel tijdens de overgang van het ene naar het andere jaar. Ik kan me er veel van herinneren en het brengt een glimlach op m’n gezicht. Soms vind ik het jammer, dat die tijden voorbij zijn. Dat is iets wat tijd doet, het brengt verandering met zich mee, nietwaar? En daar hoef je zelf niets voor te doen. Op zo’n 2.5 uur rijden van Auckland is de Coromandel Peninsula. Zo dicht bij de stad, maar oh zo anders. Heuvelrijk, veel bomen, prachtige stranden en slechts een paar wegen door dit grote gebied. Hier heb ik met 2 Nederlandse vrienden nieuwjaar doorgebracht. East of Auckland across the Hauraki Gulf extends the Coromandel Peninsula. Coromandel Town home to a few thousand lies in an area of really attractive countryside. I managed to get to Coromandel in my new car. I purchased a car in Auckland, $1400 NZ, 1987 Mitsubishi Lancer estate, I should be able to sleep in the back of the car, save money on hostels occasionally, sell the car on at the end of the trip. I get to go exactly where I want to, when I want to, and New Zealand is really nice to drive in, the roads are mostly empty. So I drove to Coromandel, 3hrs from Auckland, enjoyed the freedom.
