December 30th 2005

Photos on the way shortly!! Heavy snow did not stop us on the 29th of December 2005 from hiring the 7-seater van, packing it full of warm / waterproof clothes and provisions for the next four days and heading into the Scottish Highlands! After a long but beautiful car journey through winter scenes reminicent of the Narnia film, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, we arrived over the bridge to Skye. Unfortunately by this time it was dark and we were unable to appreciate the scenery, but the plan is to get out there and explore this little island. Hopefully we wont run out of petrol ; )... read more

Where are the Mountains?

Arrived into sunny, warm Lyon today for a week long skiing holiday - great view from the plane of flat green farmland all around? Where the heck are the mountains? Those of you who know me will be thinking that is typical of Little Miss Geography Teacher !! I had a fair idea of where I was headed but expected to be able to see evidence of hills and snow from the aeroplane - it was at that point I realised I probably had a long bus journey ahead of me in search of some snow that was worthy of hiring skis!! Sitting at the exit definately has its advantages - extra leg room being the main one but I also managed to be first off the plane and the first to get my luggage and ... read more

October 10th 2004

Hello there folks, well it did not take long before I went on my travels once again. As a birthday treat I have treated myself to a weekend away in Boston, MA in the USofA. My stop over in Dublin was nice - I just love the Irish accent, unfortunately I didn't pick up a Craig Doyle look-a-likey to bring home with me. So far I have been window shopping, visited the Cheers pub, done some more window shopping, sat and looked studious with a big book in the Harvard Campus - got mistaken for a local, twice, so I must have looked intelligent enough - and done yet more shopping. I have felt like I have been walking around a movie set, the place is really clean and picturesque. The people here fit exactly ... read more

With only having a short time in Austrialia I thought I should cram as much as possible. Organised a trip along the Great Ocean Road and a wildlife trip to see the Phillip Island penguins. The Great Ocean Road trip turned out to be a geographers/geologists/photographers dream. We got to see wild kangaroos that have made their home on a private golf course, as well as a wild Koalas. The main part of the trip was to see the amazing coastal scenery that Victoria is famous for. Victoria as in the state in Austrialia - not me! The following day the trip consisted of visitng a wildlife sanctuary which involved getting up close and personal with orphaned wombats, kangaroos, koalas and not so personal with dingos Phillip Island was the next stop to see tiny timid ... read more

Well last night was so much fun.... just a shame it has taken me twenty-odd days to add another a journal entry.  Just in case you werent aware, I have spent the past 22 days travelling home, going back to work, watching olympics etc.  Anyway - the neighbours night!!  The pics will be on here soon or as soon as I am organised enough to move the pics between computers and onto the net.  Unfortunately Toadie couldn't make it but they managed to get Steph Scully at the last minute to appear at the neighbours night with Harold (who atually isn't that fat) Bishop and Carl (yummy) Kennedy.  After the crowd was warmed up, having sung or screeched the neighbours theme tune til we could we were hoarse like Madge the stars appeared.  They came around the ... read more

Well I am lovin' Melbourne. Everyone said I would and I do! The city is very cosmopolitan, there are cafes and shops galore. At the weekend there is street theatre and market stalls. I have spent the last few days soaking up the international atmosphere. I went to see a film at the International film festival last night. The film was based in Glasgow and made me a little home-sick! I got over it quick enough wiht the help of a banana, chocolate + cream crepe! Today I visited the neighbours studio and Ramsey Street and later tonight I go the infamous neighbours night with some of the stars. Hopefully I should have some photos to put on the website soon. I have been very good and managed to avoid the shops and instead I ... read more

I spent the last few days in New Zealand in Christchurch staying with my great-auntie Janet - well I think that is her relation to me. Janet has been in N.Z. for forty years, yet she still has a broad Dundee accent while I have been in the country four weeks and have a strange mixture of accents depending on who I am talking to at the time. Janet and her welcoming friends and family are proud Scots and seem to have enjoyed re-telling stories from their past and I have very much enjoyed listening to them. Janet took good care of me, feeding me home-made soup and making sure my electric blanket was turned on. In fact it was just like being at home - which is where I wanted to go when I left ... read more

August 2nd 2004

After deliberation, I decided to go back to the Remarkables for another days' skiing.  I had enjoyed the first day so much and my skiing had come on heaps in a short space of time so I hired all the gear again and headed up the mountain. At the end of my last lesson the instructor said I was about a level 3B so I went along for my morning lesson and stood in the 3B line.  We headed straight up the hill and went for a test-run to make sure all the 3As & Bs had assigned themselves to the correct ability group.  Well I had managed to forget almost everything from the previous days skiing and was tkaing it a little too slowly for the 3B group and I was demoted :( This must ... read more

August 1st 2004

I was pretty jealous of the folk who had perfectly clear weather and took a scenic flight back to Queenstown, so you can imagine how happy I was to wake up and find that yesterday's overcast weather had cleared and once again the sun was shining without a cloud in sight. I phoned the airline and arranged to be picked up from my hostel, taken to the airport, a 45min scenic flight and a transfer back to the hostel in Queenstown.  Yep, the credit card has absorbed yet another one of my impulses which I will have to deal with when I get home!!! It turned out to be even better than that though - for no extra charge a hunky pilot picked me up and flew me back to Queenstown!!! Oh yeah!!! You will be pleased to ... read more

July 31st 2004

A more reasonable start this morning a cushie 9.50am pick-up from my hostel by the kayak instructor Wayne. Yes, I am going kayaking again - this is the one place I was determined to have a go at it before I even arrived in N.Z. so despite being on many kayak trips already, I booked a full day trip - surely I should be good at it by now.... This is the furthest south I have been on my trip and this was also set to be the coldest trip I had been on to date, so I was pretty pleased that the kayak folk had lovely matching stripey thermal gear to dress up in as well as fleeces, beanies (hats) and spray jackets in a fabulous shade of purple. Back in a tandem kayak - ... read more
