We haven't wrote for awhile so be prepared to read a lot. When Keith and I arrived in Auckland we hopped on a shuttle bus downtown. From here it was fairly easy to find a place to stay. We wanted to stay at the luxery Basebackpackers, but there was nothing available, so we settled for Queen's Street Backpackers, which was fine. The next day, we decided to hop on a ferry to Rangitoto Island, where we did 1 out of 53 hikes in our "Tramping in New Zealand", Lonely Planet Guide. It took about 4-5 hours (10km). We thought this would be a good one to warm up our legs. We hiked to the summit of Rangitoto Volcano and then along the coast of the island where we saw some great views of Auckland. I have ... read more

Arrived here in Whitianga (on the east coast of the Coromandel Peninsula; Coromandel "town" is on the west coast) yesterday after yet another highly scenic bus ride through the mountains of the Coromandel peninsula, be it through thick cloud and drizzle - it's still gorgeous. In Whitianga I received a very warm welcome at the "Cat's Pyjamas" Backpackers hostel, infintely friendlier than the impersonal lodge at coromandel - although that did have an outdoor spa. You can never have it all by the look of it. The Cat"s name by the way is Mr. Darcy!!! Whitianga itself has a beautiful golden beach, a pretty marina, palm trees and a very mild and humid climate. There's also plenty of wind - great for the surfers, but what about the rest of us??? After having a quick look ... read more

Having fuelled up on a "full works breakfast" at Rotorua's Fat Dog Cafe (can't find an accent aigu on this keyboard!) I went in search of my bus - it turns out schedules are handled in a very relaxed manner in this country and the bus left about half an hour too late, the driver casually checking in travellers as if there was all the time in the world. Knowing I only had 10 mins to catch my connecting bus in Tauranga I got pannicky. How was I to know he'd wait for me? Anyway - all went well and after 5 hours, 3 buses and a windy scenic drive through rain and shine on the Coromandel peninsula (enhanced by the lively commentary of the driver, obviously very keen to pass on his knowledge) I arrived ... read more

After leaving Rotorua we cruised up to Taurange on the shores of the Bay of Plenty. It was a pretty sizeable town/city and it's funny how the further North we get the more we enter denser civilisation! A couple of things we haven't done yet is give you an overview of NZ prices. A litre of unleaded here is about 50p currently, and Diesel approx 30p. Food is definately cheaper than Oz - something which has suprised many Kiwi's that we have spoken to. Whilst we haven't eaten there (I Promise) McDonalds is about half the price of the equivalent meals in the UK. There is also many more Asian and Polynesian people in the local community the further North we head. We headed on quickly from Tauranga as their wasn't much to see or do ... read more

Hello, i am back! After a few days on the road without much internet access, we are back in a "big" town and i hope to catch you all up on the events of the last few days. After a nice stay with Bob and Pam in Auckland on the night of the 1st, the Kiwiexperience continued with an early morning pickup to travel to teh Coromandel Peninsula and Mercury Bay. After a quick tour of Auckland and the views of Mt Eden, we checked in with the Kiwi Tour office, to get everyone's schedule sorted out, and then it was off to the East Coast. We had our first stop in Thames. A little town that used to thrive on the gold mining industry about a century ago. Today, there is not much to do, ... read more

So here I am just taking it easy at Brisbane airport waiting for my connecting flight to Singapore and starting my journey back home. Pretty sad to be leaving NZ but will be back someday and having started reading about Singapore, am really looking forward to spending 4 days over there in tropical heat, approaching 30 degrees, before going back to the cold reality of UK, roll on spring..... The last few days in NZ, we spent just taking it easy on the Coromandel Peninsula, a couple of hours from Auckland with some of the best climate in NZ. The first day we spent in Waihi famous for its goldmine, went to the Karanghake Gorge and had a leisurely walk around (esp after the Tongariro Crossing exertions), and then had an afternoon stroll and snooze on ... read more

Prochaine etape, Rotorua. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------... read more

On the 19th we headed to Waihi to check out the gold mine that is still in operation. The Martha Mine produces about 80% of NZ gold. We could walk along the top of the mine and look down into the huge pit that they have dug away. Dave liked the big machinery! From there we headed to Karangahake Gorge where we did a walk through old gold mining tunnels. The walk we did was called the Windows Walk, because the wall of main tunnel had been cut out at different spots along it so the waste rock could be dumped out into the Ohinemuri river 200ft below. It was a really good walk, with lots of chances for Dave to get lost in all the old mining tunnels if I’d let him. From there we ... read more

On the 17th we left Colville and headed to Whitianga, which is a favorite holiday spot for Kiwis. Once arriving we relaxed at our hostel the Cats Pyjamas. The next day we headed out to Cathedral Cove. After a 45 min drive to the parking lot it was a 35 min walk to Cathedral Cove. Along the way we stopped at Gem Bay in hopes to do some snorkeling but the water was to rough and murky to see anything. And the fact that we got covered in fish eggs was not a major selling point either. So we continued onto Cathedral Cove, and once there we set up shop to do some sun tanning. But it was more like sun burning, after not seeing sun for 5 yrs skin tends to burn to a nice ... read more

On the 16th we drove 30kms north of Coromandel to Colville. Colville is a one street, 10 houses town. Here we stayed on a farm stay backpackers. Our main reason for staying in Colville was to do the Fletcher Bay to Stoney Bay walk. This walk started at the top of the Coromandel Peninsula, the drive was windy gravel road that took us1hr and 10 mins to do. At one point it took us 20mins to go 6km. The walk took 3 hrs to do one way, so we only went half and then turned around. The walk started through farmland, then dropped down to the coastline and into a bay. We stopped for lunch in Poley Bay and collected some Paua shells. From there we walked another hour to the lookout point where we could ... read more
