Irene and I rocked up to the cutest little hostel, Tui Lodge, in Coromandel, nearly by accident. It's not technically a camp ground but you know you can just park up over by the gazebo or in the orchard....can you get nicer than that?! Met Margaret and Gav who were working for their keep and otherwise keeping us entertained and up-to-date with all the soap gossip! We arrived just in time to be invited to Friday night's BBQ catered by some of the German workers that were also staying there, a variety of culinary dishes were on offer including bacon bones and cabbage , wild boar and beautiful salads, strawberries and chocolates, cheese and crackers etc. It was a huge amount of food, and then of course we drank our way into the rest of the ... read more

Just two nights at a reet tidy hostel in Whitianga (say Fit-ianga) in the North West of the North Island. The town was fairly quiet but it is not yet their high season. You can tell this due to the rain and cold! But the sun does pop out every so often. Stopped off on route to a place called cathedral cove which was really really nice. Check out the photo!!... read more

Driving north of Rotorua, you soon hit the northern coast and the Bay of Plenty, named as such by Captain Cook when he first hit the coastline and observed an abundance of food supplies in the Maori villages. It still is an area with an abundance of food being a major citrus fruit and kiwi fruit growing region - in fact Te Puke, a small town on this stretch of coastline claims to be "the kiwi fruit capital of the world". For tourists however, this stretch of coastline is more a "Bay Of Very Little" - a few garish beach/harbour towns often dominated by tasteless beachfront concrete structures, are dotted along the coast. We hot-footed it past the bay to the large Coromandel forest park on a large coastal peninsula of the same name. The Coromandel ... read more

If Auckland appears to have hit the 21st century running, you don't need to travel too far to discover that the 1980's are still alive and kicking elsewhere.....indeed this might be generous as the music in the Goldfields Shopping Centre in Thames was distinctly 1974. Thames as you would guess from the above is a former gold mining centre that has found modern day solace in being the regional town for the Coromandel Peninisula and having the longest straightest shopping street in NZ. The drive to Coromandel Town was a very scenic wind up the coast - a delightful little town that has found it's niche after gold in cappucinos and art galleries and boasts a truly fine fish and chip shop (that knows what scraps are!!). The backpackers at the Lions Den also takes some ... read more

Thursday: Went and said goodbye to Byzantiums -the nicest place for brunch in Auckland and eat a pile of French toast, syrup and fruit and then dropped Rebeccah of at work and bought takeout lunch from Salad Works- the nicest make you own salads in Auckland. Then Tavis and I set of west to Hahei where Tavis use to go on holiday when he was a kid (he lived here till he was 7). We set up camp- yes a tent and then went to hot water beach- which does as it says on the tin! You dig a hole at low tide and hot water from below seeps up. It its really hot (60*C) and you have to mix it with cold water. It was really busy but we waited around until most people had ... read more

From Auckland I decided to try out my new car and drive to the Coromandel. The Coromandel is a peninsula situated a couple of hours drive from Auckland and is famed for its rugged scenery and seclusion. This was not always the case. Gold was discovered here in 1867 which led to an influx of prospectors. Nowadays the prospectors are long gone, as too the loggers that followed them. Now far fewer people live in the small, scattered towns that litter the cape and many of these call themselves “alternative life-stylers”. Hippies to you and me. * In the first hostel I stayed at I got talking to an Aussie girl who was hitching around the North Island. When I told her of my new vehicle she offered to be my car-mate for a bit of ... read more

We started off our week on Monday by heading out to the Coramandel Peninsula, just east of Auckland. Our first night was spent camping at the trailhead to the Pinnacles, a very cold night, where we seemed to be the only people in the entire park camping. The trail to the Pinnacles the next day was an 8 hour hike, which despite camping at the trailhead, we got a late start and made it back right at sunset. The trail was awesome with scary suspended footbridges, many beautiful rock staircases, and steller views. The next day, Wednesday, we went to the Waiau Waterworks, a quirky little tourist trap with all of their main attractions powered by water. The best part about this place was the children’s area though, with rides such as flying bicycles, a hamster ... read more

Making the most of our extended holiday and to escape getting into the trap of 9-5 (which it actually is over here!) we try to go away most weekends. Auckland is in a great position and it is really easy to get to loads of different places within a few hours. We were also fortunate enough to bump into a couple of like minded Brits, Mo and Simon (aka Mr and Mrs Snow) who have turned into our weekend away buddies. Since we have been in Auckland we have had weekends away in Raglan (surf capital of NZ), Waiheke (wine growing island just off Auckland), the Coromandel and the West coast beaches (made famous in the film 'the Piano').... read more

The minute the heavy machinery arrived on site the rain started. They are having to dig so deep for the storm water to get the fall which makes the sides very unstable and they fall in and the hole gets bigger. We are having to cut the big hedge down at the side which will leave things a bit open, but we will be planting the biggest trees we can. It is hard to imagine that the mess will all be gone by summer. It had better be. Wyn and Shirley Fountain had their diamond wedding anniversary and we all dressed up in 1940's gear. It was very successful. Lyn now has a hankering for a silver fox fur! The management meeting went very well after they decided J's cold wasn't infectious.... read more
