Decided to take an afternoon bus to El Chalten from El Calafate to do a couple of quick hikes to view Cerro Fitz Roy, big famous peak. My thoughts were to get there in the afternoon, make it to the top in time for sunset and come back at night, then wake up and do a different hike and watch the sunrise, then catch an afternoon bus back to El Calafate and then try to head to Chile to Puerto Natales. Those plans didn´t quite work out. It was a bright sunny day all day until I arrived in El Chalten then the clouds started rolling in. So i quickly got my room changed clothes and hit the trail hoping to beat the weather. But no luck, Patagonia finally won a round. Shortly into the hike ... read more

30 hour bus ride done. this bus was nice but they gave us no food or pillows or blankets which was kinda annoying. But I made it, even had a few friends on my bus, couple of German girls Peter and I had met while biking. El Calafate really only has one thing to do, the Perito Moreno glacier. Unlike the previous alpine glaciers i had seen this was a valley glacier and it is huge, 5km across, 15 km long and 60 meters high. When we got to El Calafate I met up with the girls from the bus who wanted to rent a car so we could do everything ourselves and make it cheaper, we grabbed 2 more girls fromt eh bus and went of to get a car. We also decided we wanted ... read more

Bariloche was a great stop. On my first full day i decided to take a bus into the mountains and rent a bike to do what is called the Chico circuit. this loop is about 30km up and down the hills surrounding a bunch of lakes, and then there were a few side trips along the way. After reserving my bike i ran into one of my dorm mates, Peter, and he decided to come along as well. This was a good way to spend the afternoon and the scenery was beautiful, pictures can hardly do it justice. The following day I had to start and figure out where i was going to go next and try to figure out how to spent the quickly fading days I had left. It was becoming impossible to continue ... read more

My last day in Mendoza (monday) was definately a great time. Got an early start finding my bus and making it to the next town south, Miapu, where all the bodegas "wineries" are located. Guidebook said to get off at the triangle roundabout to find the bike rental place, well if its a triangle how can it be a roundabout, anyways never saw it and ended up walking a couple of k's back. I happened to arrive at the first bodega as a tour was beggining in english, this was actually a private pay tour, but i kinda just walked in behind and followed them around. Had the free sample of wine then took off to the next bodega. The next few were not open so i decided to just bike all the way down the ... read more

For the last night in Buenos Aires everyone was taking it easy, so we went up to the roof for a few beers. Well the party of 5 on the roof turned into about 13, and sooner or later it was 4am and you couldnt count the number of empty beers on the tables, so we went off to get some food and then back to the hostel by 5, at this point i decided it was bedtime, but a few of the guys went back to the roof and drank until sun up. Spent most of Friday just relaxing and waiting for my bus, wandered the city for a few hours once everyone from the night before startet feeling better. Then it was off to my bus for a 14 hour ride. Bus wasnt that ... read more

Looks like pictures are going to have to wait again. Well I decided to stay one more day in Buenos Aires, the city is huge and there is lots to see. I've certainly broken in the new running shoes, probably around 15 miles yesterday alone. Yesterday I did the northern half of this city, started out going to Plaza de Mayo, this is where the famous balcony where Eva Peron stood (also the movie Evita with Madonna). next stop was the mall, shops are all pretty much the same, but the building was cool. Then i went to the Cementerio de la Recoleta, old cemetary where alot of the rich/famous/powerful are buried. Its like a small city with old and new ornate crypts. Also where Eva Peron is buried, to find her crypt just follow the ... read more

Well I arrived in Buenos Aires without any problems. Not sure if I got less sleep in my snow cave the night before the trip, or on the plane, but here none the less. Finding the shuttle and getting to the hostel was quite easy. The hostel is nice, there is a roof balcony overlooking the city where you can have a beer and enjoy the sun, which i certainly did when I arrived. A few quick observations, i certainly can't do anything more then read spanish, traffic lanes seem to only be recommended, and beers seem to only be availible in the 1 litre bottle, not that that bothers me. Walked a big portion of the city already today, but now i'm beat, i'll fill that part in later and throw up some pics.... read more

So, today’s blog is brought to you by Jeanette. We left Dunedin, but not before visiting the “steepest street in the world” in the Guinness Book of World Records. We walked to the top and back down, not feeling it was really any steeper than a San Francisco street, but, if they say so, I believe them. We then drove north to Mt Cook, a spectacularly high peak where we took a short hike through the snow to view its beauty. Then we drove to a town called Methven where we went snowboarding on Tuesday at a ski field called Mt Hutt. More snow than we’ve seen in New Zealand so far, and the best ski area yet…we had a good day. Tuesday night we went to Christchurch where we spent the next week at a ... read more

Wednesday July 11th, Its seems today we did nothing but drive, after waking up and packing the car we drove out of Invercargil to the Catlins conservation park on our quest to find penguins. As always we drove through plenty of beautiful scenery along the coast and arrived at our destination. For once we arrived at our destination to coincide with the proper tides, this time to see a petrified Jurassic forest. Walking along the rocks on top of the petrified forest was cool, but what we had really wanted to see was penguins, there were also frequently dolphins is the bay but we were not as excited to see those. Unfortunately we were not lucky at this beach with any wildlife, except the usual seagulls. So we decided to continue our search along the coast ... read more

So…what’s today? Where was I yesterday? What town am I even in today? I seem to rarely know anymore. But to start the week we finally enjoyed a few American delicacies that we have been craving (see picture), Mmmmmm Dr. Pepper. Unfortunately though we have been having this undying urge for Cheese-Its and they don’t exist here. And now to our week… Wednesday July 5th: We drove to Wanaka after glacier exploring in Franz Josef (see last post), and searched high and low for a hostel or somewhere to stay in the general vicinity of Wanaka. Unfortunately for us it is the school holidays here and everyone is down in this area skiing right now, so everything was booked. It’s like trying to find a cheap room in Tahoe at the last minute on Christmas vacation ... read more
