The Coromandel Peninsular We drove through kauri forests to the beautiful Coromandel Peninsular for the day. We stopped at Hahei Beach, which was simply stunning in the sunshine, for a spot of lunch. We cooked delicious fluffy pancakes overlooking the sea and then walked off our yummy feast by trekking down to Cathedral Cove. At the bottom of the cliff, you find an incredible archway eroded from the limestone cliffs. It was well worth the walk, as the sea was a gorgeous aquamarine, playfully lapping at the white sandy shore, paradise! We puffed our way back up the hill and drove to Hot Water Beach. Getting ourselves into hot water Typically the sun decided to disappear behind the clouds when we arrived at Hot Water Beach. Undetered, we hired a spade and dashed across the beach ... read more

Here is the blog's first video! Starring Tanner (Rachel is super jealous). It takes place at Cathedral Cove (technically the cove right beside Cathedral Cove) after a very long, hilly hike. In this scene, I'm trying to brave the arctic waters. I fail, but I do succeed later, we just couldn't get that one on video. That's the ticket.... read more

First lesson learnt on this little trip would be don't cycle along roads listed as scenic. I presume the roads are very scenic when you are cruising along in a nicely insulated car at 100km, however this does not ring true when you have sweat dripping in your eyes causing semi blindness whilst struggling to maintain a speed of 20km/hr The second lesson learnt would be ......... don't whistle at big lurcher style dogs in backyards that you assume to be faraway, to alleviate boredom on vast never-ending country roads. Never mind the fact that you assume they are 100 upon 100 of metres away but also how fast can these things run ?! It turns out pretty bloomin fast . According to my speedometer (not necessarily the most accurate thing in the world) 32km and ... read more

After a long and deep sleep I awoke to find my lock had been tampered with, so I breathed a sigh of relief that i'd thought to wear my tracksuit bottoms and a T-shirt to bed as it meant a trip down to Reception to ask for some lock cutting equipment. With the lock sorted I found the quay and bought my ticket over to Rangitoto island (a volcano which last erupted 600 years ago). The trip across was quite calm but perishing cold, i almost reconsidering sitting out on the deck but persevered so i could get the most of the sights around me. The route up to the summit was quite challenging at times which you'd expect of a volcano with the black basaltic rock and mangled roots which made up the pathway. I ... read more

UntitledJacob Harris So, we headed out again after a couple days stay in Auckland..andthe first 6 pictures are where we woke up .. we headed south east to a beatiful area called the Coromandel. kind of overcast and rainy and windy but it is still wonderful. We stayed at a hostel and everyone thought we were crazy for staying in a tent in that weather, but it wasnt so bad. we met a couple and they had just come from the direction we were headed so they gave us some pointers for cool and free things to do..they were also going to be flying to LA and traveling up the west coast of the U.S. to Canada, then over to NY.. so we gave them some pointers for California and Oregon.. We went to check out ... read more

Should I get in the hot tub? (Yeah!) Will it make me sweat? (Yeah!) Should I get in the hot tub? (Yeah!) Will it make me wet? (Yeah!) Well, well, well... - Eddie Murphy as James Brown on Saturday Night Live I know I know...I just quoted SNL 2 blogs ago. But the James Brown Hot Tub gig cracks me up. This blog entry was originally going to be before the Hell Froze Over entry...but then it turned out that a few days later (despite Hell being frozen) Heaven is still in business and I'd add to my hot pool stories. First...before our multiple attempts at the Tongariro Crossing, shortly after leaving Rotorua we stopped off on the side of the road at a natural hot spring. This was a good find due to the fact ... read more

The first place we visited after leaving Auckland, the Coromandel Peninsula, turned out to be one of our favorite areas of New Zealand. It is stunningly beautiful, with rugged coastlines, sandy beaches, and rolling, lush green hills. Our first destination, since we arrived at the base of the peninsula after dark, was the wonderful Miranda Springs Holiday Park. We were too chicken to try to free-camp that first night, so we spoiled ourselves by staying at the nicest campground in the North Island. To this day, nearly a month and a half later, we still haven’t seen its equal. And we’ve stayed at a LOT of campgrounds. Even better than the immaculately clean kitchen and hot showers was the ginormous thermal pool. We spent the evening (and the next morning) soaking in the biggest hot tub ... read more

Day 31 - Sunday 20th May 2007 Woken up by the sound of trucks some time in the early morning! Apparently there was a fishing competition, so all the boats were launching near to our van! Porridge, porridge, good hearty breakfast!! Sar drove into 'town'. We strolled around looking in some of the really cute little shops! There was an amazing bead shop there!! Only bought one each! Fatsos sar, gem and nik bought some chips with various extras! We stopped down the road out of town beside the sea to eat. Sensible amz had some soup and bread! We wished we had after...... The drive along the east coast of the Corromandel Peninsula was very pretty and generally quite different to the west. It was very windy in parts and hilly, but in other parts, ... read more

Had to get out of town and get back to nature. Actually, I think I’d been looking for an excuse to get some driving in for the last few weeks. Walking and public transportation is great, but every once in a while you need to feel you’re in control of the speed. Headed for the Coromandel Peninsula - two hour drive east of Auckland - Friday after work. Not much to add beyond what’s written in the photos. The Coromandel is more a summer beach destination than a winter spot. Small communities that have little to offer (i.e. dinning, bar, entertainment, recreation, etc….), but beaches. First night in Thames, a gold mining town. Next day did the small street fair (garbage… I mean garage sale) on the main street. Hit this great butterfly farm on ... read more
