As we travelled down the east side of the Coromandal, we stopped off at one or 2 tourist spots for a look. It is the holiday season here for New Zealanders, so some places are a bit like honeypots, and we didn't stay too long. They are still beautiful!!! ... read more

A glorious morning as the weather men promised, so I set off across the ferry to explore the headland the other side of the river. Alex stayed in town a bit and mooched round (lots of steps for the pedometer!). Firstly I walked to whitianga rocks, an old pa site, with lovely views of the estuary and some hidden bays. Then for some reason I decided on the steep and difficult route through the bush over the headland, and it was steep, but managable. Again, wonderful views. On the other side were several lovely beaches, so I sat in the shade of a tree and ate my lunch, wishing I'd brought my swimmers. It was so hot, a change of plan was called for. So I didn't walk to the end of the next headland, but ... read more

This peninsula is to the east of Auckland, and I'd always wanted to come here ever since Uncle George sent us a board game when we were little called "Round new Zealand". It is stunning. we drove up the west coast of ot yesterday, stopping to have a look at some old gold mines. Then across an unsealed road through the mountains - visiting a square Kauri tree on the way, and down to this hostel called most aptly "on the beach". It is exactly. Mercury bay was named by captain Cook as he called in to watch Mercury pass the sun, and this bit of the bay is called Buffalo Bay because a ship of that name was wrecked here, and lies just in front of the hostel, under the water. ... read more

YAYAYAY! I have a buddy! :) Mason FINALLY arrived after about 3 days of travel ;) Because of delays with luggage and rerouting, he arrived late on Saturday night, and of course I had a scotch on the rocks and bright smile waiting for him! At the Rendez-vous! Again, can't believe I found it, and good thing, the correct Ryan Mason arrived! :) The first thing he said as he looked out our window overlooking the city and the pool/gym was, "Awesome, look at that, do you want to go work out?" HA!~ So great to have him here! We went out to dinner, and were pretty disappointed with the food creativity as well as the service...it actually became a common theme around NZ! Our best meals were made in a 3x2 kitchen in the Tron! ... read more

DATE VISITED: 24,25,26 (ISH) DECEMBER After spending half a day purchasing a decent 3 man dome tent from Auckland we proceeded south to a little peninsula known as the Coromandel south east of Auckland (North north east New Zealand) . We were prepared to see loads of Kiwi's here as most of them head this way for their Christmas break. We were right! We decided after a few budget-reviews on our finances that it would be worth camping some nights as it is so much cheaper - we would pay back our tent in a week, and then after that it would just be savings after savings :) Our first stop was in Thames which like many towns around here are all built on a central through-fare lined with shops and cafes. There was a nice ... read more

Well, we're back, after a few days in Adelaide with the very generous hospitality of Annie's folks. Not too many photos, but Helen got a good one of some sheep. The weather in NZ is changeable, and the sun will get ya no matter how cloudy you think it is. A very warm welcome from the famile, too, which is nice. Xmas has come and gone very quickly indeed. We are closing in on a Springer Spaniel dog, located in Dargaville (north of Auckland). Cute, huh? Ru has given helpful advice and encouragement. The site has 979 hits. The puppy photo surely has to tip me into 4 figures!... read more

23.11.07 Finally the day especially Eskil had been looking forward to arrived. We were going to pick up our camper today. Everybody was a bit excited to see what our home for the next 5 weeks would look like. After a long and thorough introduction to all the technicalities we finally were allowed inside the van. It looked really nice with a lot of luxuries such as tv, dvd, microwave etc. Drove off towards Coromandel Peninsula and Hahei Beach. We started with some beginner difficulties and while driving everything in the kitchen made an enormous noise because we hadn’t packed things properly. Originally we had planned to go directly to Rotorua but we had decided to see a bit of Coromandel first. The road was very, very winding and Paul had a challenge in getting used ... read more

Heavy overnight rain, continuing this morning Tent seems to be coping with the rain, had to move a couple of pegs, though. Headed out for the Gold Mining Museum in Thames - a long drive, but hopefully uneventful. Drove south down Highway 25 from Whitianga - heavy rain and spray made overtaking impossible and got stuck behind a logging truck for ages. The advantage of New Zealand summer rainstorms is that it's still warm - 20/21 degrees, rather than the cold Atlantic summer rain we get at home. I suspect that the weather systems are making their way down from the warmer northern seas. The road went along the coast for a while and then turned inland and climbed over the hills. Like the rest of Coromandel, these were volcanic, with many of the red and ... read more
