Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

Kalbarri - Perth Got the camera - less functions than the old one and twice the price - but hopefully it won’t keep breaking down! On route to Perth we stopped at the Pinnacles National Park - acres of desert sand with these variously shaped pointy rocks. They are not sure what formed them but we favour the theory that they are calcified tree trunks. They are very entertaining, almost as much as the devil’s marbles. We took lots of photos with the new camera. Arrived at the campsite in Perth to find it fully booked. (it is a very small [View Full Entry]

DAY 373 I awoke with terrible cramp in my calf muscle, I rubbed it for ages before it calmed down and went back to normal. I had a glass of water beside me, it was a warm night so I drank it down with ease and eventually went back to sleep. I knew Andy had already got out of bed, it was daylight already but I was tired so carried on sleeping, we had a late night last night and after all that travelling a small lie in was deserved. I finally succumbed to the daylight at 7.30 and got up. [View Full Entry]

It was a three day cruise from Bali, our last Asian port, to the big beautiful continent of Australia. Just 72 hours took us between two very different worlds. We arrived in Fremantle on a gorgeous Monday morning. Ann, our friend from Australia, met us at the Freo port and drove us to the Rottnest Ferry terminal. We had planned to spend the day on Rottnest Island, a former Aboriginal penal colony and home to the indigenous quokka marsupials. As we were waiting to board the ferry Ann said, “How would you like to take a drive from here to Albany?”-- [View Full Entry]

As my time in Cairns comes to a close, I thought it time to update you one last time about the happenings here in Far North Queensland. My work in Port Douglas came to a rather abrupt end after about 3 and a half weeks. The school holidays came to an end and there was no longer such high demand for housekeeping staff, so that was that. Thankfully I had kept up my Baskin Robbins duties, and the week I finished in Port Douglas, on of the Baskins girls left, so I could increase my hours once again. I also resumed [View Full Entry]

We have now had more than enough of Darwin!!! Ready to move on. Troy had been taken advantage of way too much at his work so he told them to stick it a couple of weeks ago and quit on them, towards the end he was doing any where up to 10-15 hours extra a week and not getting a cent extra (but we do miss our freebies...coke/milk/water) My hours have gone down due to wet season up here and not as many tourists = not as many hours. So thank goodness we only have 2 weeks in Darwin left as [View Full Entry]

Day 202 - Denham to Galena Bridge (Murchison River) Somebody has stolen the ocean! We wake up to find the lowest of low tides this morning, quite incredible really considering that part way through the night I made Darryl get up and check that we didn’t have water lapping at the caravan door because it sounded so close! Yet again with such beauty surrounding us we have to question why humans think it acceptable to leave rubbish strewn about the place when they leave. Glass bottles, plastic containers and all manner of toilet associated items, all easily cleared into a refuse [View Full Entry]

Late for check out again. Got up at like 9.45am did notttt want to get out of bed at all. Managed to get my stuff together and pack it rather well. Ugh my backpack is so heavy its ridic. We discovered there was a direct bus straight to bondi beach outside hyde park which is like a 10 minute walk away. So we set off walking and literally within 2 minutes I was sweating. The backpack was killing me. Why didn't I bring a suitcase? Would make my life so much easier, I'm an actual numpty. We stopped in our delicious [View Full Entry]

Rainbow in Canberra
Rainbow in Canberra
Is it not beautiful?! It was one of my first days down under, grey rainy day but I instantly felt warm and happy when this rainbow appeared, especially for me!
Just a short one because nothing happened and do only have few new pictures. I moved for the second time and am finally settled, yeahaa!! I live in a 1 bedroom flat in Hackett, which is right at the border of a nature reserve so that I have some wonderful hills as I look outside my windows. The neighbourhood is really quiet and peaceful with the exception of the noisy birds and the possums on the roof that sometimes wake me up in the morning It is 30 min by bike to ANU but I love it! The air is nicely [View Full Entry]
