La ... read more
Exmouth 15th May One of the newest towns in Australia, Exmouth was founded in 1967 as a support town for the Harold E Holt US Naval communications station, and a joint venture with Australia, which is the main source of local employment (spying?). As we drove into Exmouth for the first time, it was evident that it was new and growing and attracting ‘money’. The magnificent Novotel Ningaloo Resort based next to the marina and the new estate being built on a canal system is the first thing that greets you, and it is pretty impressive. With no wet season, the region has a dry climate with hot summers and mild winters, Exmouth has around 320 days of sunshine each year. We were here at the start of winter and experienced weather temps down to 33 ... read more
Still optimistic of spotting more turtles we were up walking along the beach at sunrise although the only thing we found was old tracks in the sand, so we headed for an early breakfast. With it being our final day on the island we decided to indulge ourselves in the sunshine and relax for a couple of hours. Unfortunately time passed by far too quickly and it was soon time to join the tour of the research station situated next door to the holiday resort, although they still keep their clocks set to mainland time for working purposes. Set up in 1950 as a hut and a research tank the University of Queensland run site can now accommodate up to 180 guests, including large high school trips. With various tanks and laboratories two key advantages of ... read more
On the way to Cairns we went via the Atherton Tabelands, we stopped in a town called Innisfail and then went to Millaa Milla falls where Peter Andre filmed his videa for Mysterious Girl. The waterfall is really cool and pretty big. We went to Eacham lake next which was quite large and got some nice photos, before going to Curtain Fig National Park and seeing a "killer" fig tree. The seed for tree had landed on the branch of another tree and grew until it completely took over the tree and strangled it to death, it then went on to kill the next two trees beside it as well and it now massive!! So that was pretty awesome to see. We then drove along some really windy roads through the moutains and the views were ... read more

Hi All We come to you today from Newell Beach, a quiet little spot about 20km's north of Port Douglas. We have been joined by Rachel and her boyfriend Steve and his brother Mike and Jess arrives here on Thursday. After our last blog from Mt Isa we ventured north to Karumba, a beautiful spot on the bottom of the gulf renowned for it's fishing and magnificent sunsets and believe me neither disappointed. My brother Paul drove over from Port Douglas with his boat and stayed with us for the ten days. After the heat and basic facilities of King Ash Bay this place was like a resort and Deb was certainly a lot more comfortable regularly sipping g&t's at the sunset bar. This was our last opportunity to get into the barra as they start ... read more
34 From Sea to Sky 14 May 2012
Published: May 15th 2012Oceania » Australia » South Australia » HawkerA big week. We’ve driven about 1,000km, stopping overnight in Elliston, Cowell and Hawker. We left the caravan in Hawker, had 2 nights in Arkaroola, and are now back in Hawker. We try not to do overnighters as the aim is to see things, but don’t want to waste time either. From Coffin Bay on the SW tip of the Eyre Peninsula in South Australia, we drove up the west coast to Elliston. Coffin Bay and Elliston are small seaside communities which grow during the summer, but had a sort of closed down feeling to us. Lots of closed up houses and “shacks” as they call baches over here. Out of season? The coast is a mix of long white sandy beaches and spectacular cliffs. They have made a coastal drive on the cliffs, and have ... read more
The rest of Southern South Australia
Published: May 15th 2012Oceania » Australia » South Australia » Eyre Peninsula » EllistonMoving on… Port Broughton is an old favourite, and we felt we were in familiar surrounds when we arrived at the caravan park. The trip westward across Yorke Peninsula was short (about 120 kms), but it was enough to give Geoff apoplexy – 24.8 lts/100kms was the best we could do against the wind (read - cyclone). Thankfully the wind abated (mostly) and it was relatively pleasant on the west coast. Geoff and Marg got the fishing gear out and walked down to the local pier to catch a feed for dinner… it was a good thing that we emptied the wallet at the Port Victoria fish shop, as the fish were not biting where Geoff and Marg were. They were biting 50 metres closer to the beach from where G had picked, but what a ... read more
Today is the fifteenth of May 2012. There is nothing especially significant about today but it is today, and I suppose there are few more important days. I'm sitting in Sydney airport waiting on my flight to Perth and watching the dregs of my laptop battery dwindle. It is nearly five months since I last wrote a blog post. I've been hidden away in small town Australia working night shifts at a winery, slaving away and selling my soul for the dollar. It never ceases to surprise me how, when all is said and done, when you look back on a time in your life, it is usually the good you focus on. I didn't enjoy my work at Casellas – it was dull, mind-numbing and monotonous, but I don't look back on it as a ... read more
Today Steve and I drove down to Eastern Creek to the V8 Super Car track. ( I had given Steve a gift voucher for Christmas entitling him to a 'Hot Laps Experience' in a Super Car). The track is about a 2hour drive South West from our place. Steve thoroughly enjoyed himself. He said it was an incredible experience.
