Dear all, Well here we are! We gave back the van with no problems and spent a night in an airport motel. It was strange being in a bigger space and I missed the small space of the campervan. Ash suggested that to compensate I should shut myself in the bathroom or sit under the table! Anyway we didn't sleep great but got up and got our flight to Sydney. For the first time ever we arrived in the day and I was on the right side of the plane, coming in at the right angle to see the amazing sight of the opera house and Sydney harbour bridge. I was very excited, much to the dismay of the stuffy business man who was sat next to me! We got to our apartment which is right ... read more

Well, our window, unfortunately, isn’t fixed because an incorrectly sized window was sent in error and much as we have thoroughly enjoyed our time in Alice we decided to get a piece of Perspex cut and have duct taped it in place. We are now heading north to Darwin where we have arranged for the correct size window to be delivered there. Once again the roads are more or less straight and we are honestly just cruising along and singing along to some old favourite songs with no-one but ourselves to hear our very “out of tune” wailing! Tonight we are at a camp by the side of the road with several others and as it is so warm and with no city lights to spoil the sky, we sat outside watching the stars which are ... read more

The Msalato Kindergarten in Dodoma, Tanzania which we help with financial support has notified us that the rains required for this year's crops, March & April, did not arrive and so the crops have failed leaving most people reliant on what they can purchase from the merchants. As in most countries, including Australia, this leads to an increase in food prices and in the Dodoma region this has seen a trebling of prices for maize & rice. Our concern at the moment is for the 45 children who attend the kindergarten we support. Due to increase food prices parents make a choice, send the children to kindergarten or buy food for the family, of course the decision is clear. With the children not going to kindergarten they miss out on the daily "porridge' meal at the ... read more

Had a big sail for our next anchorage, so decided to leave while there was still a lot of wind to get us there. (wind had dropped from 25-30 kts to 20-25kts) sw we left early in the morning. Actually had a pleasant day sailing, only to find out that the anchorage was very rough and rolly. Weren’t going to stay there, so continued on to Cape Melville. Arrived 9pm. Neither of us like anchoring in the dark, but at least this anchorage was protected. The next day was a short (and very lovely) sail to Princess Charlotte Bay (Bathurst Head). Here we collected the biggest oysters we have both ever seen. We stayed here a few days as once again, the winds were strong and we were in a very protected anchorage. On our last ... read more

Hello from red dirt central, The last 10 days we have been doing the gaps, gorges, chasms, canyons, holes and rocks out from Alice. We restocked all supplies including a necessary brake repair to our Prado, which saw it in the shop for a few days which made for some creative transport options as Julie and Craig have removed their back seats and we didn't have a spare bike helmet, but we managed and we left Alice with new supplies all round. We then headed west stopping by Simpsons Gap, Ellery Big Hole (water hole) Stanley Chasm, Serpentine Gorge before pitching camp at Glen Helen Gorge, which has a lodge, pool, bar and petrol as well as camping facilities. We make ourselv... read more

A beautiful morning dawned with the forecast being in the 30s, not bad for May. An early start and off to ride the ferry (again), we are almost on a first name basis with the red haired ferry master. He always lets us off first cause he likes us or, he doesn't want us to cause more mayhem by stuffing up his ferry. We rode down past Blanchtown and stopped at Hilltop and Big Bend lookouts. A great vista at both spots and numerous photos taken, don't miss the opportunity if you are down this way. There was very little traffic around and the roads were a dream. All is now good with the world again....... Did you know, The Murray river is the 3rd longest navigable river in the world, after The Amazon and The ... read more

Late in the afternoon the day we arrived at Bitter Springs we went for a walk down to the springs and the surrounding vegetation. The area is very lush and pretty. The springs themselves are small but have been set up with areas where you can view the bottom if you choose not to swim. Apparently there are turtles on the bottom. The most noticeable things about the area is that the vegetation has not been degenerated by the sheer number of people who overrun the Mataranka thermal area and it has no fruit bats, hence no stench. Personally we were put off by the amount of algae along the edges of the springs themselves. That did not deter anyone else but us. When we went through Mataranka in 1990 it was smelly but lush and ... read more

For the next 4 weeks we are heading first to Paris and then to Brittany. However, before we start this journey let's wind back the clock to 2011 and a conversation we had about our trip that year..... ......."how about we spend all four weeks in Spain. Would that be alright with me” Dianne asked. Alright?? -- it would be absolutely marvellous for me!!! however I was surprised that Dianne would give up her opportunity for two weeks in France. Dianne quickly corrected me on this point – no she was not giving up France, but rather postponing it from this time; our next trip would be totally French. ..... which brings us to here and now as we prepare to set off to redress the travel imbalance. For our two weeks in Paris we have ... read more

Arrived back in Paraburdoo on a Tuesday afternoon to a hot high 30's heat, this is why I'm back, to finish training in this heat. 5 am Wednesday morning, a 20 km tester on the tarmac, no pack. Went well , 20kms in 2 1/2 hours, 8ks an hour. The discussion with myself is, what pace do I want to try and maintain through this race?. The only competition going on will be with myself and trying to get the best out of an older engine, although I expect the spirit of the occasion should lift the km rating a little. Thursday was a very lackluster 12 ks on the treadmill and Friday, had to take the day off from exercise due to a massive funk. Where did this thing come from, a huge loss of ... read more
