Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

Melbourne - heiss ersehnt, lang erwartet, traumhafter Fluchtort in meinen schlechten Backpackermomenten.

Here is a complete update on the tour from Amsterdam -> London then onto Paris: So we left the hotel early morning of the 20th Sept on our way to Amsterdam, which I hated, so I will move on. So we headed down to rockhapton, the beef capitol of australia, unfortunatly no beef was eaten here as everywhere was shut when we walked through town. We saw about a million jellyfish though on the bridge which put steve off swimming even more then before!! Luckily we were only using here as a pit stop for our farmstay. We got an early morning transfer from the hosle and headed on an hour n half drive to the outback. When we got there we got kitted out for the horse riding then met our horses. I got a pretty fiesty arab with [View Full Entry]

So does that make little Tirion our great neice?! We don't know, but we do hope you have a really lovely day! Oh my goodness it’s so awesome here, it really makes us feel blessed to be waking up to such fantastic scenery. I keep waking up really early here so head off again for a good walk. The morning sky looks really angry today though and I wonder if there’s a storm brewing. [View Full Entry]

After leaving the majestic Grampians we made our way back to the coast, our first port of call being Mount Gambier. After two beautiful sunny days in the Grampians NP, we were not expecting the nice weather to last and we were not disappointed! Driving through hail to get there it continued to rain for pretty much the next week with only a few brief sunny periods. Mount Gambier appears to be famous for its limestone caves, “blue” lakes and the youngest volcanoes in Australia. We camped next to Mount Schank (one of the volcano craters) and took a drive down [View Full Entry]

Just back from a weekend in Melbourne and I can confirm that they do have trams, tree lined streets and a dirty great cricket ground. Wasn't sure what to make of it at first: it is a lot different to Sydney (as people never tire of telling you) and the wide boulevards do make it feel a little more European, but it's all a bit more complicated than that. I guess it's true that it's a more stylish place (I fitted in wonderfully, obviously) and the food was good, but there's something above and beyond all that that slowly creeps up [View Full Entry]

As I've said before, I liked St Kilda. Thought the tram ride was going to kill Ange (won't go into the details, but an old boy wouldn't let her sit down even though she was sick because he was saving the seat for his wife who was already happily seated at the front of the tram), and when we got there it was blowing a gale, but in the end it all turn out for the best. For a start, Ben and Jerry's were giving away free ice cream, and secondly the wood fired pizza we had was very tasty. You've [View Full Entry]
