Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

Well what can i say other than this is possibly the greatest place on the planet! We arrived there from surfers paradise knowing that byron had a reputation for being awesome, we were not let down.As it was quite late in the afternoon we decided to just buy a load of alcohol and socialise with Adam, Sam(goon man, goon, canada, america)just some of this guys nick names and few others who we no longer remember, this went on long into the night so a hangover was inevitable! To shift this the next morning we headed to the beach until late afternoon then walked around town where [View Full Entry]

Day 197 - Point Quobba to Gladstone Scenic Lookout It was a full on windy old night last night but luckily it seems to have subsided a bit this morning and we’re still intact on the top of our dune at Point Quobba. The wind is blowing in the wrong direction for the boys to go out on a fishing trip again which is a shame, Darryl was looking forward to having another go and really looking forward to actually catching something big enough to eat! We’re seriously considering leaving here today as we need to ‘phone home’ and speak to [View Full Entry]

Day 196 - Point Quobba A quick birthday shout out to my cousin Claire is in order today. She’s probably half way up a mountain or whizzing around on her bike somewhere but if you see her, tell her we wished her many happy returns! With lots of love from Nigel & Square! Well nothing much had to happen sometime and today's the day! It's pretty windy here so we suspect that will have stop both the fishing and snorkelling expeditions we had planned! Of course there are always alternatives and we considered them carefully, one by one - a morning [View Full Entry]

Hi everyone just a quick update on things. Last week I went on a road trip to a town called Gloucster in NSW with a friend from work who had to pick up a motorbike, overall it was around 2750KM, it was nice to see some of the country where buses dont go and meet some local australians. Work is the same as always very boring, and I cant wait to start travelling on 15th December. Welll thats all and ill let you know whats going on next time im on the internet. [View Full Entry]

Yep, The recovering alcoholic, drug user, 5-minute-marriager and Paris Hiltonite has hit the shores of Australia. Thankfully they share as much regard for her as I do. Within hours of landing "Fans" were complaining because she wouldn't sign any autographs. "Fans" because these were 50 year old me, rather well-built and worn very thick glasses....hmmm....there for Britney or the 14 year old? So other than being followed around by some pedophiles, she was also accused of lip-syncing! I know, I'm thinking the same [View Full Entry]

Flew from Cairns to Alice Springs where it was a toasty 37c! From Cairns to Alice Springs there's a half hour time difference which was a bit weird! The taxi driver from the airport in Alice Springs was of Scottish descent but asked us whereabouts in England we were from!! As it cooled down we took a walk up Anzac Hill in the centre of Alice Springs to see a view of the town and watch the sunset. The deep blue desert skies were amazing and the photos don't do it justice. Next day we sheltered from the baking hot sun [View Full Entry]

Spooky Photos I am experimenting with uploading photos which so far has eluded me or rather my computer. Malicious spyware or add-ons are suspected! Internet Explorer seems to have been the culprit and by Jove I think I've done it! These photos were taken on the morning of the first dust storm as I rode to work. Familiar places took on a strange armageddonesque quality and the eerie first light made many people think twice about their sinful last days! [View Full Entry]

SIGHTS OF DARWIN “We are not on a holiday! We are on a lifestyle!” This is what we keep telling ourselves at the Free Spirit Resort (fancy name for a caravan park). Our days have been just like they were at home: work, go home, work, go home, work, and go home… you get the drift. The exception however, is that we are doing it in the Northern Territory and living what we have dreamed about for ten years. Normally at home we would do something on a Saturday - so that’s when we do things now. So my blog entry [View Full Entry]

Nap time - touring style

So I went on my big trip up north! It was amazinggg. The first day we left Perth city bound for Kalbarri. We took Highway 1 to get there and apparently this highway goes all the way around the continent in a giant circle - 17,000 miles! On my trip there were three other Americans, a Scottish girl, a Japanese girl, and a Korean guy. The tour leader was Australian and he was excellent! He knew so much about everything we saw and was so friendly - it was fabulous. Our first stop was the pinnacles. These are super cool. They [View Full Entry]

We left the Blue Mountains for a long drive Southwards through some surprisingly green countryside. At Kiama we stopped to see the blow hole - but we caught it on a calm day when it wasn’t doing much blowing, but it was a jolly good hole! We jumped out of the car to grab lunch in the small town of Milton where we were surprised that the weather outside was very hot and windy - it felt like a fan assisted oven! I used this as an excuse to pop into the cooler TAB (betting shops normally attached to pubs) and [View Full Entry]
