Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

Hey! I arrived in Australia last week and spend two days in Sydney. On Wednesday I left for Cairns to stay on a diving boat with Ephe for two days, which was really nice. We saw some sharks, Rays, Barracudas,... The weather was really nice. Sunny and hot! Unfortunately I don't have any digital pictures yet. See ya, Stefan [View Full Entry]

We have finally stopped driving long enough to up date you all to where we have been in almost 10,000 kms!! We did a day trip to the reef, saw lots of fishes but no turtles. The current was quite strong and had to swim hard to stay near the reef and not land on top of it. The boat rocked lots, and we both felt a little relieved to get off at the end of the day! When we were at Daintree we did a boat trip and saw lots of crocs on the river banks, thankfully they are not [View Full Entry]

Me and Siobhan have moved into an apartment! We're sharing a one bedroom studio which is two minutes from the beach. It's great to finally get full nights of sleep. The hostel life is brilliant for meeting people, but when you're sharing a room with seven others, the only way to guarantee a full night of sleep was to get blind drunk - not good for the bank balance or the the liver! This was difficult too as the hostel we stayed in wouldn't let you drink in your room for some reason. Obviously we disobeyed that rule most days, which [View Full Entry]

The last few days have been fairly busy so he's the update as to what I've been doing. On saturday night I had my first experience of going out into the town at night. We took the bus (which turns in to a train) in to town to go to this party that someone was throwing. We weren't really invited, but nobody minded that we came to visit friends. It was a christmas party and they had hired a marquee for the evening. There were circus performers, clowns, people on unicycles and lots of waiters carrying round food for us. There [View Full Entry]

Perth Our last day in this lovely city. We got back on the bus down into town and walked down to the Jetty to see what trips were going - and booked ourselves on a lunch cruise up the Swan River to a Winery for wine tasting. This gave us 2 hours to spare so we took the free blue cat bus to the closest stop for King’s Park. The bus stopped right outside the hotel that Dave Taylor and I stayed in 16 years ago! I spent the last few hours I had in Bicheno on Friday wandering around the town (which was quite small and wonderful) and enjoying the ocean before I hopped on the bus to Hobart. The bus was hot and stuffy since the day was so warm, but the scenery was gorgeous. We drove along the coast most of the time. The ocean here is such incredible blues and greens and so much clearer than off the California coast. Pretty interesting when you think that sometimes I am actually looking at the same ocean (the northern half of the east coast of [View Full Entry]

We arrived back in Melbourne to find that the weather had certainly changed since we left…it was 7PM and the temperature was somewhere in the mid 30s. We had booked accommodation for the next 10 days in a St. Kilda flat, which was really central, just off the main street. It seems that the entire population of Melbourne descends on St. Kilda for hot Sunday afternoons so by the time we had fought through the traffic everyone was feeling hot and bothered…and the beer that came before dinner went down very nicely! Anyway, we met up with Caroline’s Uncle and Aunt [View Full Entry]

Driving vacation in Australia When I visit a place, an impression is formed inside me. Often time, the impression can’t be explained logically. It can’t be broken into different categories nor be assigned weighted values. It is just is. In this regard, Sydney is very inviting and welcoming. 180 nationalities now call Sydney home. Undulating landscapes, artful gardens, history-telling structures, modern skyscrapers, charming urban villages, delicious ethnic foods, lively night life, and friendly people are framed in an endearing postcard setting. And together they provide kaleid [View Full Entry]
