Eh bien oui, deja a Darwin!

The Gold Coast, or more specifically Surfers Paradise was pretty much your average seaside party town but with a great beach as only you'd expect in Australia. I decided it wasn't really a place I could spend any longer than a day, so after a few hours on the beach and a run in with Sally from Home and Away (oh yes!!) I booked my next leg of my trip...Byron Bay. I'd heard that Byron was another seaside town but with a more hippy, spiritual influence and relaxed atmosphere. It's a place where if your'e a party monster you can make it into a crazy drunken mess of a time, but if you're more passive and tranquil such as myself...you can also find a place here. I guess it's just about choosing who you surround yourself ... read more

Melbourne June 21-27, 2006 Melbourne (or Melburn as the locals call it) is a city you don’t hear a lot about in America. Sydney is the city that gets all of the attention but Melbourne is the city that we loved. If it wasn’t so far away from our friends and family, we’d be packing our bags and settling down here. It is a city with an international flair that has a lot of things to do and interesting neighborhoods to explore but that is also very friendly, laid back and accessible. As great as we thought it was, it was probably even ten times better because it was the first large western city we had enjoyed since leaving the United States -- we were sick in Singapore and Darwin and Alice Springs were more like ... read more

Hi Guys, Just a quick update on our travels... Still in wet and rainy Melbourne, today, Friday, is our last day in Australia before we leave for NZ tomorrow. Been doing the tourist thing in Melbourne, but can't upload any pics... Did get the hotel to buy a new bed though which was good! The bed we had was so soft it was terrible on my back, so they went out and bought a brand new one! Great service! Hotel Tolarno in St Kilda, can highly recommend it to anyone coming out this way! There - advert over! We did have a sunny day yesterday when we met up with Amelia for lunch and dinner! Amelia is 'working' in Melbourne for a few days, but we're sure she has retired!!!!! (Private joke there for when/if Amelia ... read more

5th - 8th September 06 - All the news and papers, here today, refer to 'Steve Irwin'. Its really strange that only the other day at the aquarium at Hillary's Harbour, I was watching the stingrays in fascination, as they swam safely around me, while I walk through the glass tunnel. I thought how cute they looked with their smiley face underneath. (like my drawings of a smiley face). :-) Thanks everyone for the great texts and emails on the subject!! The bus journey was 6 hours from Perth to Albany. The vast countryside was surprisingly flat moorland (ranges) with unusual shape trees and many sheep. Dairy farms and vineyards are plentiful. There are many crators, in the fields, which are apparently dams, dug out for the water to collect to feed the animals. Lots of ... read more

Day 159 Friday 08 September 2006 Coober Pedy Coober Pedy is surrounded by a moonscape like landscape dotted by shafts and mullock heaps from opal mining activites. It is known as the largest producer of opals in the world. The holes are not backfilled as they claim it is more dangerous to fill them in than leave them open. They claim that people can see the holes and will keep away from the open shafts. If they backfill them in they don’t know where the holes have been dug and you can still fall down them as the walls cave in. The population of this town is 3500. There are over 40 nationalities and approximately 400 aboriginal people. From November to March the weather can reach anywhere from 35 to 48 degrees Celsius in the shade. ... read more

We waited until 8.15am to wake Wigg and Ross even though we were excited, having not seen them since Cambodia. As usual, they didn't thank us for waking them at such an 'anti-social' hour! We had a brief catch up before our room was ready. We hadn't slept since the night before flying, so were desperately in need of some sleep... the excitement of a bed was short lived for Greeny though as within 10 minutes of getting into an actual bed for the first time in 2 1/2 months, her friends from home, Iain and Jacks, text and were in Cairns, so whilst Whits and Smithy slept, Greeny dodged snoozing and went to meet them. We were staying at the Caravella 77 backpackers on the Esplanade, opposite a huge manmade lagoon with a gorgeous chilling ... read more
