It's been a long few days since the last blog, and suffice to say our feet hurt! We spent a wonderful few days in Byron Bay, we both LOVED the little town, the hostel, the beaches, the weather, the food, the free bikes, etc etc. Even the Byron spiders were cute little things. In case this sounds too ideal (and so you guys in rainy England don't get jealous) there were serious rainstorms which brought in the largest cockroaches ever. Eugh. Anyway, after a fantastic and relaxing few days, we had to tear ourselves out of bed very early yesterday morning to greyhound it to Brisbane. Brisbane was alright. (Ok, Susan says more than alright.) I remain to be convinced. I thought it was all a bit of a concrete jungle, and the view from the ... read more

As you have guessed, I am loving Perth, not just the town, but areas surrounding, along the swan river, (orig known as Black Swan River, shortened now to Swan River), there are many marina's and Millionaire homes (including one owned by David Bowie no less) and what look like nice communities away from the city. The Port of Fremantle was a popular place for Perthians on a Sunny Sunday. There are martitime and motor museums and, quite Bizaarly, the Fremantle Prison is on the tourist attraction list, for A$18 (about 8 quid) you can have a guided tour. I went for the better option of having a delicious breakfast at the round house cafe. A short bus ride away is Scarborough beach, apparently the local surf spot, when I got there, the very kind bus driver ... read more

I'M SO EXCITED !!! Just had to write to you all, (While you are all still in the land of nod) I was sitting in the YHA dinning room with my breakfast cup of tea watching 'Perth' TV, which was like watching Richard & Judy, the ads came on, and there he was 'Richard Marx' in concert in Perth at the Burswood Theatre on September 9th. I nearly choked on my tea!! Its raining cats and dogs here, so after getting instructions for the booking office from reception, I walked down to the jetty and cancelled my boat trip, well put if off till Sunday. Then got the train to a suberb call 'Subiaco', 3 stops away. Guess what I got a ticket, not in touching distance of the stage, (well right near back actually, but ... read more

Perth WA - First impressions My last couple days in Singapore went in a whirlwind, I lost my phone (a recent habbit of mine!) but luckily this time it came back to me, Jaslyn rescued it and we met up so that she could return it. It was really good to meet her too, a fellow traveller herself, spent a month in Europe on her own last year and has plans for future trips all over. The following morning I was up early for my flight to Perth, it was an excellent flight, take off was slightly delayed because of connecting flight from London, but service was the best I have known. I watched two really good pics, March of the Penguins, if you are ever feeling fed up with your lot, you must watch this ... read more

However, before we set off into the wilderness to go about planting a stupid amount of pine trees we spent three Weeks buming about in Perth, a very nice place even in winter. We stayed at a very cosy hostel which was more like a house with lots of dorm rooms where we met some very interesting people including a group on northern Irish blokes who really challanged Helen's ability to ... read more

I started the day by trying to get some dawn photos of the city. I set-off early Kings Park and I was very pleased with the results. On the first full day we decided to go on the open-top bus tour round the city. This was an excellent tour up until it started to rain and we had to make a quick dash for the covered part of the bus before we got too wet. This took us all round the city and all the main sights were pointed out to us. It was pointed out to us that there was the free ‘Cat’ bus that loops round the city - but it was unlikely that we would see as much and it would not have been as much fun. For the afternoon of that same ... read more

Again, our route from Bangkok to Perth in Australia was a lot more convoluted last time, involving planes, trains and boats, although we did see some of the places in between. This time, we had another direct flight. On the flight, it all came back how friendly the Australians are. We were chatting to people on the flight who were all interested in what we were up to, were giving us advice on where to go and even their phone numbers in case we needed help at any point. Like last time I came to Australia (), the big deal getting in is the quarantine - there was a Steve Irwin video on the flight all about it, with an emphasis how harsh the penalties are. And we were all sprayed with something before we got ... read more

This morning was the last dash to Perth, just 160 km away. I stopped on the way in at Perth Dive Academy to get myself kitted up with some equipment for when I go back to Exmouth. I soon found that Diving is like any other hobby you can just keep spending. There seems to be no limit to the kind of stuff you can have and for some reason the most expensive equipment always looks the best. (Funny that). I was really good and left without buying anything, I did put quite a few things by for when I return though. My Next stop was the car hire garage, as the car seems to be making some very strange noises when I turn corners. It turns out that there is no oil in the power ... read more

We've now left the bouquet of barbed wire country behind and are now re-established in the same hostel in Perth we left in early 2003. It's a strange feeling because everything is so familiar, but it feels like someone has invaded your home. Australia is as welcoming and friendly ever (except for the b****** who flogged us an out of date phonecard) and the only major drawback is the beer seems to have gone up in price. We went out regardless to our Perth "office" in Northbridge for a few refreshments to debate our release from the open prison of South Africa. Perth has changed little since we were last here. Western Australia is apparently experiencing an economic boom and this is evident in the general upwardly mobile direction of the shops and of course, the ... read more
