Well my day didn't really have the best start!! Firstly I had another lousy sleep which has really made me feel sick and shaky today. Lisa and lack of sleep don't really mix!! Secondly the lady at breakfast managed to pour tea all over the table! Bless her. Being tired I couldn't take advantage of the breakfast buffet either!! Sorry pal!!! It looks like I'll not have time for brekkie tomorrow either as I have to leave on the airport shuttle at 6.30! I forgot to mention a strange story from yesterday at the 12 apostles. I was stood on a bench there to get a birds eye view. Some Chinese people were there with their video cameras and in turn they got up on the bench with me hugged me, we waved at the camera ... read more

After so many months of not being able to just 'relax', sticking to a tight schedule where every minute is crucial to the flow of the day, it was nice knowing that we could wake up and take our time to get down to Phillip Island. We cleaned the house the night before to come home to something inviting, so all we had to do was have breakfast, pack the car, put the dishwasher on and leave. We left home around 10am, got some fuel, went to the supermarket to pick up some cereal for breakfast and a case of water bottles (24 bottles for $9 is a whole lot cheaper than $3 a bottle) and bought some lottery tickets (for just in case!). I bought a scratchie ticket for each of us. We sat in ... read more

There was one aspect of the earlier mentioned course “Experiencing the Australian Landscape” that especially persuaded me in taking it. That was the actual experiencing part, or, in other words, the field trips. We have two of them in total, one to Phillip Island and the other one to Wilson Promontory, a national Park. Both of them are camping trips but the camping will be taken to another level at the Wilson's Prom trip. At Phillip Island we had recreation rooms (rooms with tables and benches), normal toilets and hot showers. We stayed at the same camp site the whole time. At Wilson's prom we'll have to carry our camping gear and food with us in our backpacks. Sanitary facilities will include only drop toilets and no showers. Some people in our group of about 25 ... read more

We recently did a trip to the see the fairy penguin parade at phillip island. After quite a drive we got to the island. Just before you cross over the bridge we had lunch at the local Fish & Chips place and set on the jetty to eat. This is where we saw the most amazing giant Sting Rays just floating through the water below us - with a 'wing-span' of probably close to 2m. They live there and we were told you can see them all the time. We had a pass that let us visit Churchill Island and the Koala Conservation Centre, as well as the penguin parade. The island was great, relaxing, early settlers experience. The Koala Conservation Centre not as interesting. You had to really look to see koalas, but nice walk ... read more

Today (Mon 13th Dec) we went to Philip Island (Penguin Island fame from the recent Rolf Harris documentary on BBC). It is about 100km south of Melbourne, so we hired a car to make the trip down. The weather was an improvement on our first day, with partly sunny skies clearing completely by the evening, but the temperature was still realtively low, probably about 20C so it felt more like an English summer, and was quite bracing in the wind. Anyway, it turned out to be a really good day. Philip island has a very country feel about it and it was good to get away from the city for a day. We saw plenty of Koalas sitting in Eucalyptus trees, though they don't do much other than sleep and looke cute. There is some amazing ... read more

6 - 8 Dec 2010 Stayed at Philip Island for a few nights in a cute little house right near the coast in Ventnor. Was a lovely little getaway, although we copped some pretty crappy weather most of the time we were there. Starting to wonder if it's just going to rain for the next 2 years... We went to the Penguin Parade on our first night and got front row seats. The penguins were so cute and of course Reef was the first one to see one before everyone else - eyes like an eagle! It was really interesting learning about them and realising how nervous and anxious they become when they have to cross the sand and get to their burrows in the dunes. They form "rafts" (large groups of penguins) and then all ... read more
