There was one aspect of the earlier mentioned course “Experiencing the Australian Landscape” that especially persuaded me in taking it. That was the actual experiencing part, or, in other words, the field trips. We have two of them in total, one to Phillip Island and the other one to Wilson Promontory, a national Park. Both of them are camping trips but the camping will be taken to another level at the Wilson's Prom trip. At Phillip Island we had recreation rooms (rooms with tables and benches), normal toilets and hot showers. We stayed at the same camp site the whole time. At Wilson's prom we'll have to carry our camping gear and food with us in our backpacks. Sanitary facilities will include only drop toilets and no showers. Some people in our group of about 25 ... read more

Organ Pipes and Hanging Rocks I'll start updating this blog more regularly again from this week on. My lectures are slowly getting past de introductory phase. It was about time, because we're already 3 weeks in the 12 week short semester. Especially the neuroscience classes really complement my curriculum. The knowledge from all life science courses (cell biology, biochemistry etc.) that I have been taking at UCU is now used to study the brain, which the big nerd in me finds exciting. Yesterday, 12/3, Joe, Andrew, Adam and I went on a daytrip together. Everyone else we knew was either at a folk music festival or at the Great Ocean Road for the weekend. The sight of spending all Saturday at the halls wasn't a very good one, so we decided to explore Melbourne's surroundings. The ... read more

Normal Life at Deakin Hall & Uni I'm enjoying living at the halls (of residence) here. Whenever I step out of my room, there's always somebody around. The nights are mostly spend in the projector room (ground floor), lounge with tv/pool tables (first floor) or in the loft with tv (third floor). If its nice weather, the courtyard is the place where everyone gathers. The 23rd of February, the courtyard of Deakin Hall resembled a small beauty salon. Kathryn was gettting a hair cut at the picnic tables and Sean's chest was waxed on the grass. That might seem odd to you, but it is quite normal/even more odd if you think of the fact that this particular night we all dressed up in our bed sheets to party. They weren't called bed sheets any more ... read more

Monash Abroad Orientation, Deakin Hall Orientation, Monash Orientation 17/2 Thursday We went to a restaurant/bar where you can get gourmet pizzas for only $4 on weekdays. There was a small restaurant section and the rest of it was filled with large couches/comfy chairs. It even also had an outside/rooftop part with lanterns. Because the buses that enable us to get back from the city to campus during the night (nightriders) only go on Friday/Saturday, we left well before 12:00 a.m. Together with a small group we decided to take a long walk through the city instead of taking the tram to the train station. This part of the city was filled with bars, restaurants, parks and old houses and churches. Thursday night is (like most others) a party night around here. The place to go is ... read more

First Week in Melbourne Lisa 9/2 - It’s strange to walk in here knowing that I will live here for the next 5 months. Nothing or nobody around here I know. Then, globalisation becomes strangely comforting. To see the same signs, symbols, brands, buildings styles, films; to hear the same noises at traffic lights, the same music. All familiarities that I want to escape when I am travelling, I am now looking for in some way. 10/2 – I live in Deakin Hall on the ground floor. My door opens directly to the outside and the other door in my room leads to the bathroom that I share with 3 other girls (1 from the USA, 1 from Canada, and 1 from Germany – they all arrived later this week). My room is semisplit in two ... read more

Last Days in New Zealand English (Lisa) 8/2 Last Day in Christchurch We spent our last afternoon in Christchurch partly separately. Anouschka went into the botanical gardens and I went to the Art Gallery. To have a proper goodbye to thank Erik and Jean, we made a three course meal for them, Dan, Frances and Jay. Afterwards, we still had to pack our suitcases in the middle of the night. 9/2 Goodbye NZ To quote the miner from Reefton: New Zealand really is a bit like paradise on earth. Incredible landscapes, very friendly people and a relaxed atmosphere. I can’t think of any other country in which a customs officer says: “see ya!”. It is not difficult to feel at home in this place. Thanks everyone for travelling with us by reading our blog! Our next ... read more

Routeburn Track 3/2-6/2 English (Lisa) To say that it was raining when we drove from Milford Sound to the start of the Routeburn track is an understatement. It was rather as if the sky was continuously emptying buckets full of water. Luckily, heavy rain results in the most spectacular views in Fiordland. Many mountains are just bare rocks with hardly any trees on them, so the water has nowhere to go but to stream down them in the form of big waterfalls. While Erik and Jean were in complete awe in the front of the care, us two in the backseat were also slightly worried: we were about to start the Routeburn Track. The Routeburn Track is one of the nine ‘Great Walks’ in New Zealand. It’s 32 km long and the track goes through both ... read more

’s Middags kwamen we aan in Te Anau, waar we ... read more

Lisa Christchurch & Driving to Twizel English (Lisa) 30/1 Christchurch Inner City & Anouschka's Birthday 2.0 We went to the Art Centre of Christchurch today, located in the former university building. It is a really nice, old building (especially for NZ standards) with a court yard. Artists have their own room. Outside, we had lunch on the grass and went to the market stalls were other artists sold their work, many of which was jewelry. The annual, two week long buskers festival was running. Some amazing musicians were playing all around the city; ranging ... read more
