Hey everyone! Made it to Phillips Island today. It was about a 150 km ride, and was pretty nice besides the brief rain stop I took. After I got going again it was perfectly dry the rest of the way and turned into a really nice day! The bike is running like a champ and quite comfortable. Now let's see how the 450 km days go! Oi! Of course, the main reason I am here is for the Little Penguins and the first night of camping. Penguins were so cool! They come to the beach in "rafts", or groups of a few dozen or more that at first look like little waves that just slowly keep coming. Then, as they get closer they relax and rest for a bit, then just shimmy up the beach to ... read more

Monday started with heavy cloud and showers, but gradually the sun came through. So the washing was done and The MH and trailer both got a much needed bath. Mary quoted the old Percil ad where 'you can really see the difference!' After lunch the weather cleared so we decided to drive to Phillip Island. There are numerous attractions on the Island - the Chocolate Factory, The Penguin Rookery, and the amazing coast which was the feature of the day for us. Well we confess to consuming excellent chocolate and seeing penguin as well. It was only a short drive from Wonthaggi to San Remo through rolling country side. Flocks of sheep more like seen in NZ, and cattle. At San Remo (small town) we crossed the bridge to Phillip Island. We planned to go around ... read more

Unser heutiges Ziel ist Phillip Island. Auf der Landkarte steht, man kann dort Pinguine sehen. Also nichts wie hin.

Spoilt by our en-suite facilities we were reluctant to leave the campsite, but thought we'd best pop over to the beach and get a picture of the black swans that filled the inlet. The rest of the day was spent driving and we reached Phillips Island at 4pm. The brochure advises to dress warmly for the Penguin Parade as its pretty cold on the beach at night, so on went the jeans, hoodies and coats! We sat on the viewing platforms (along with 2000 other people) to watch the little penguins make their way up the beach. We managed to get a really good spot right in front of where the penguins were coming out of the water (we saw about 50 make their way up the beach). The little penguin (that's their actual name) only ... read more

(There should be 6 PHOTOS and - eventually when uploaded successfully - a video for this posting, so SCROLL DOWN to see them if they do not appear within this text frame.) We had a lie-in this morning. Sleeping is moreish; the more you get the more you want! Once we got going we decided to walk through Fitzroy Gardens. Amongst other things the park is home to Captain Cook's house, the oldest building in Australia. It is also home to beautiful gardens. We crossed the park and decided to follow the Golden Mile Heritage trail, passing old buildings of architectural significance housed among the high rise buildings of modern Melbourne. Among them was the Scots Church, the burial place of Dame Nellie Melba, a renowned soprano in Europe and particularly Britain (19th C). All along ... read more

We joined the Great Ocean Road in Warrnambool and went to Port Campbell stopping at every view point along the way to see the random rock formations in the sea... and getting to enjoy the sunny weather! It turned to rain for the rest of the trip! We won't bore you with details but the route is beautiful and we saw so many gorgeous sights and scenery. It's a must do for anyone who hasnt... preferably not in the rain though. We finished at Philip Island to see the Penguin Parade. They were so cute scurrying out of the water across the rocks. Rach using a bit of scouse charm tried to get Paul to rob her one... unfortunately it didn't fit in the cool box! :(... read more

(Cough. Cough. Splutter) Where am I? What day is it? Who are you? (Splutter. Splutter. Cough.) Wednesday !?! Honest ?!? Crikey – better crack on. What’s the difference between a wallaby and a kangaroo? (Here we go, go on then). No really, I’m asking you, we don’t know. They say size - kangaroos can grow up to 1.8m, wallabies can grow up to about 1m - but, for medium sized animals, how do you know whether you’re looking at a small kangaroo, or a large wallaby?!? (Does it really matter?) (Pause) Last day in Melbourne and it’s time to pick up the car. Plan is to drive up the coast to Sydney over the next five days. Bit of argy-bargy in the car rental while we upgrade (we’ve got none left - but I rang and ... read more

It’s lovely here. I had imagined the island to be quite a distance from the mainland but it’s only separated by a small bridge. Nevertheless, you do feel like you’re on an island and in a somewhat special place. It’s clean and neat and the locals are friendly. We stayed a couple of days, checking out the beaches, watching the little penguins return to their burrows, visiting the Rhyll trout & bush tucker farm (we really like the little North Eastern village of Rhyll) and hanging out in laid-back Cowes. Property is temptingly cheap on the island. I spotted a gorgeous three-bedroom townhouse for less than the one-bedroom shoeboxes that we were looking at in Melbourne last year. Having said that, for now we are more than happy with the prime real estate that is our ... read more

We decided that since we didn’t yet have anywhere to live in Melbourne, that we would turn this to our advantage and hire a camper van to live in for a few days. We checked out of the hotel and left the luggage that we didn’t need for a few days at the hotel, to give us some more space in the van, and we then caught the tram over to St Kilda where we were picking up our Jucy wagon. After signing some paperwork and a quick run through of how to convert the wagon into a bed for the nights, we were on our way to Ramsay St! It was only a 40minute drive from St Kilda to Ramsay St. It’s just an ordinary street in a suburb in Melbourne really, apart from the ... read more

Welcome back to the road trip with Emma and Jenny. After spending the week in Melbourne Emma and I debated extensively about the price verses value of visiting Phillip Island and the Great Ocean Road on a tour or trying to drive it ourselves. It would cost about half the price of the tour, but it would be more stressful. Finally Emma decided that she was confident enough to drive. We invited our Friend Marcella, from the Fruitshack, to come along since she had just arrived in Melbourne as well. So I studied the map and we trudged our way through the traffic of the Melbourne suburbs and made it to Phillip Island in about two hours We stopped at tourist information and bought a "3 park pass" to see Churchill Island, The Koala Conservation Center, ... read more
