Turning stones on our journey around this little island we call Oz!

After our overseas travel plans got ambushed by a small human, we decided that nothing would stand in our way of travel but we just bent the plans a little to do it in our home country. What better country than Australia to take 2 years off to do "the big lap" - two small children in tow, a fully laden 4WD and a camper trailer.. Let the adventures begin!

16 - 23 April 2012 From the coastal paradise of Ningaloo Reef, we headed east towards the ancient treasure known as Karijini National Park. With an overnight stop to break up the long hot drive, one memory that sticks out was the plague-like proportion of flying bugs at House Creek Bridge Rest Area. Another one of those rest areas where you can't really shake that distant feeling that there could be some crazed lunatic hiding amongst the bushes - watching, waiting until you fall asleep to make their move... Even though I'm sure most travellers have that niggling feeling from time to time, you tend not to verbalise it because it gives the feeling or thought more credit somehow. Karijini National Park is the sort of place that you just cannot miss if you are even ... read more

6 - 15 April 2012 After leaving Francois Peron National Park (and having more trouble getting out of the terrain than we did getting in...) we were booked into a caravan park in Denham. Getting back in to civilisation and structured living arrangements is always a bit of a shock to the system. Still, I must admit, it is always nice to have a hot shower when you haven't had access to one for a while. I also find myself feeling rather grateful to the individual that invented washing machines... Especially since we have been camping in the lovely (but very fine) red dust. So we spent some time in Denham getting "clean and presentable" before mum and dad/nanna and pa arrived. We took a drive down to Shell Beach which is a gorgeous beach south ... read more

28 March - 5 April 2012 What an amazing place!! The further north we travel, the more stunning the landscape becomes. We took the coastal road to Kalbarri which is an awesome little town with scenic coastal cliffs, a beautiful national park and a picturesque river running though it all the way to the mountains of the national park. We stopped off at most of the lookouts along the Coastal Cliffs, fished off the jetty, went four wheel driving through the bush along the river, took the boys to the daily pelican feeding on the foreshore (where they both got to feed the local feathered friends), went swimming in the park pool every afternoon to cool down, and spent a day in the national park. The national park was as amazing as people had told us ... read more

21 - 27 March 2012 Back on the road again! There's really no feeling quite like it. We have been really looking forward to the next leg of the trip - up the west coast of Australia and, in particular, the north west of WA. It's hard to believe that (for the moment) work has ended and play time has started it's motor up again. We had an easy drive to our first overnight stop at Lancelin. We chugged along the new Indian Ocean Drive along the coast between Lancelin and Cervantes which was a lovely drive with abundant sand dunes one one side of the road and low lying shrub back-dropped by a deep blue ocean on the other. Every time we could see the crest of a hill in the distance, we knew we ... read more

6 January - 15 March 2012 Well, our time at Coogee has finally come to an end. Looking back on our time living on the "other" side, I have some mixed but mostly happy memories bubbling to the surface. It has been a memorable experience living on the western side of the continent, albeit only for a short time. All in all, it has been 7-8 months (in two separate stints) living over in Coogee. The location has been brilliant - a very short stroll for the simple pleasure of feeling those fine white grains of sand between your toes and watching the most stunning sunsets plonked on the sand with a glass of plonk in hand. Holding on as tightly as humanly possible to those images of my two little boys running in and out ... read more

20 Dec 2011 - 5 January 2012 Smithmas!! Or perhaps Cyclone Smith is a better description? Yay, the Smiths landed on 22 December to spend Christmas and their holidays with us. It was around this time that Bohdi's fetish for Oscar's shoes was born. Holy dooly, can that kid go through some shoes in a day! Nearly every time we saw Shell and Steve for the next two weeks they were changing Bohdi's shoes! We arrived in Coogee a couple of days prior to organise ourselves and catch up on housekeeping duties. Well, in true Smith-style, they arrived in a very loud-coloured electric blue car - like they needed to draw any extra attention to themselves!.. It was so great to see them and spend Christmas, New Year's and Sienna's birthday together. The kids all had ... read more

6 - 19 December 2011 As we continued along the southern coast of WA, we fell more and more in love with the area. We based ourselves at Parry Beach to indulge our senses around the Walpole-Nornalup area as well as the beautiful Denmark. Whilst at Parry Beach, we had light rain most of our time there but it didn't dampen our experience in the forests. We also met several other young families who were travelling and doing much the same as us. We've been on the road a year now and met one young travelling family up until now and at Parry's we met three in the one camp spot. It's great to chat with them and pick up some tips and ideas regarding travel spots and "kid stuff". We spent a day in Denmark ... read more

29 November - 5 December 2011 We didn't realise how much we missed being on the road until we were back on the road for the south west Western Australia leg of the trip. We had been as far as Margaret River before but no further. Wow, what an incredible, amazing and stunning part of the country. We have been blown away day after day by the beauty of the "little" south west pocket of WA. I say little in the big scheme of things but the area we covered is actually bigger than Tasmania! When you are under tow driving along the bitumen or dirt, heading for a new desination but not actually knowing the whereabouts you will be laying your head that night, there is an overwhelming feeling of freedom and excited anticipation. It's ... read more

8 - 28 November 2011 What a whirlwind! I needed to get back from my holiday from my holiday so I could have a rest! We flew home this month for our very good mates' wedding - Em and Benny. It was such a fun and very cool wedding - what other bride does the worm on the dance floor and goes crowd surfing a number of times??!! We had a great time catching up with as many people as we could in a short time and it was good for Alex to know he had finished up work for a little while again. The boys loved catching up with all their family and friends but it was certainly a busy three weeks. Don't think I've ever crammed so much into that time frame before..... By ... read more

18 September - 8 November 2011 Alex spent the rest of Septmeber and October working and I did the usual thing with the boys - bike rides, playgrounds, beach etc. Alex was clocking up a lot of hours at work with the preparations for CHOGM under way with his work building the exhibition and display side of things. During this time at Coogee, we met more young people in the caravan park (mostly short term holiday makers) and became friendly with other longer term people. We celebrated Reef's 5th birthday, decorating the camper and annex with streamers, balloons, lolly bags and presents. It's hard to believe he is now school age and due to start school in a few months. How the time really has flown! He has really blossomed on this trip and come out ... read more
